Aquarium pump. Requirements for aquarium water pump
It is difficult to imagine a functioning room aquarium without such a useful device as a pump. It is a pump that provides continuous water supply for your fish. Also, its necessity is conditioned by ensuring sufficient pressure for the functioning of the filter installed from the outside.
The pump for an aquarium with a nozzle in the form of a foam rubber sponge perfectly copes with the role of a mechanical cleaner of polluted water. Thus, it can be called a filter and a compressor.
The main care of the pump consists of timely washing and changing the filter element. There is a trick that can facilitate the care of the device, while feeding the fish, turn off the filter. So the food will not fall directly on the sponge, which means that they will stay clean longer.
The pump for aquariums can start working again an hour after the fish have eaten. Aquarium pump has a great advantage in front of the compressor.
Many aquarists are forced to abandon the compressor due to the noisy operation of the pump. Most manufacturers are aimed at reducing the emitted sounds.
On the shelves of zoo and aqua stores you can find products of domestic and import manufacturers. They all differ in characteristics and cost. In order to choose the right pump you need to know:
- The volume of the aquarium in which the water pump will be installed;
- Purpose of use;
- For devices capable of filling the aquarium, take into account the level of water rise;
- Required performance (aquarium volume multiplied by 3-5 times / hour);
Experienced aquarists allocate devices of foreign companies, assuring the duration of work and compliance with the necessary requirements. However, high-quality aquarium pump is not cheap.
Popular manufacturers of water pumps:
Do not sacrifice aesthetics for the functional part. Even the smallest water pumps can do the following:
- Create currents that in some cases are necessary for the physiological needs of the inhabitants. Its use is mandatory in aquariums with corals that live only in strong currents. Thanks to him, the polyp receives nutrients.
- Circulate water (aquarium pump with a current or a circular pump). This action purifies water, saturates it with oxygen and mixes with aquarium water, keeping the microclimate created by the inhabitants.
- Assist in the work of filters, aerators and other devices and units. To do this, you need to install water in a way that water from the aquarium does not fall on the body.
The pomp for aquariums has the complete installation instruction in a set. However, there are general rules that will help deal with your case.
There are three types:
Based on this characteristic, and need to be determined with the method of installation. The pump for aquariums marked “internal” is installed directly inside using special suction cups so that the water column is 2-4 centimeters higher.
The kit comes with a small hose, which is inserted at one end into the device, with the other being taken out of the limits of your tank above the edge. Most models have a flow regulator.
To begin, set the water pump to medium intensity, over time you will understand how your pets react to the flow.
As the name implies, the exterior is installed outside, and the universal can stand on both sides. Here you can choose how a pump for the aquarium will look more natural and work.
Depending on the location of the pump in the aquarium, its functions may be different. The pumps differ from each other according to the installation method and are of three types:
The internal pump is installed in the aquarium, and it can only be used while being submerged, and the external pumps are attached outside the water tank. But most often, pumps make universal, they can be installed both inside and outside the tank with water.
For fixing the pump both inside and outside, various devices are used, for example, suction cups, special clamps and so on.
To choose the right pump, you must first know the volume of the aquarium, and also decide what the pump will be used for. If it is used to supply water to an aquarium and to create a flow in a small tank, then a low-power pump will be sufficient.
But for an aquarium with a volume of more than 250 liters you need a more powerful pump. There are pumps that are designed for both freshwater and marine aquariums. And there are some pumps that are used only in one specific type of aquarium.
Therefore, when buying a pump, you should clarify its type, for which aquarium it is needed, as well as the manufacturer of the pump. Some Russian pumps are not inferior in terms of workmanship and durability of foreign ones.
Buying a pump for the aquarium should not be saved, because the pump is one of the main life support systems for aquarium inhabitants.
Before installing the bottom filter should be familiar with its features. Of course, the first minus will appear immediately.
To install the system, it is necessary to completely drain the water from the aquarium, remove the soil and all the decorative elements, which takes a lot of time.
The indisputable advantage of such a filter is:
- continuous circulation of water from the entire aquarium;
- when passing through the soil, it stagnates at the bottom;
- Such a water cycle allows you to avoid rapid contamination of the aquarium and the emergence of various kinds of infections.
Aeration of the soil helps the algae to strengthen and develop their root system, but when the soil is oversaturated with oxygen, leaf growth slows down. In addition, in the soil there are no nutrients for algae, they go along with the water.
Therefore, this design solution is not recommended for use in an aquarium where a lot of greenery grows.
Even when using a bottom filter, dirt particles still remain on the ground surface. They do not pass through it due to its large size. Therefore, as mentioned above, you have to wash the pebbles.
But you can avoid unnecessary mess with changing water and washing the soil.
For this you need to put an additional filter element that will have time to drive through all the water. Or you can buy a device – a siphon, which removes large particles of dirt from the surface of the soil (this procedure is preferably carried out weekly).
Another drawback of the system is that the holes in the tubes quickly become clogged with debris. To clean them, you need to completely pour water from the aquarium and disassemble the entire structure.
For a small container (up to 50 liters) this will not cause a particular problem, but for a large aquarium it is very difficult and hard work.
There are several ways to build the structure itself. The most optimal of them is the method of using ordinary plumbing pipes.
Measure the length and width of the aquarium. Based on these parameters, it is calculated how many meters will be required for the manufacture of this system.
It is better to take a plastic pipe of small diameter (up to 3 cm).
So, for the water intake system will need
- 3 main pipes (their length corresponds to the length of the aquarium itself),
- 4 connecting corners,
- 2 tees
- 4 small segments (they will interconnect the main tubes),
- You will also need a plastic separator and a small funnel (a filter will be installed in it).
You can take Plexiglas as a grid, cut the required size and make holes with a drill (it is better to do this with a soldering iron, because it can burst during the drilling process).
The holes should be about 1 cm in diameter and located as often as possible towards each other. Also in Plexiglas, you need to cut a circular hole for the main pipe into which the pump will be inserted.
The latter can be purchased at the pet store.
After assembling the pipes into the desired structure, holes should be made in them. The pump, which will pump water, is installed on the main pipe. Accordingly, the closer the holes are to it, the stronger the thrust will be.
So that the water is pumped out evenly from all sides, it is best to drill a little more holes on the opposite side of the pump.
So, the pipes are soldered together, the plexiglass and the main pipe with a pump are installed on top. When the whole structure is assembled, after a couple of hours it can be installed in the aquarium. After its installation, the ground is poured from above and water is poured.
The system is then turned on and tested for several hours. And finally, you can please the result of the inhabitants of the aquarium.
