What you need for a red-eared turtle in an aquarium

maintenance, care, compatibility

Keeping a red-eared turtle is one of the most popular occupations among reptile breeders. To create a comfortable environment for it in the home, you need to understand what should be the proper arrangement of the aquarium.

In nature, this turtle can be found in freshwater bodies of the temperate and subtropical belts with low marshy shores. In captivity, it is kept in aquaterrariums. They are purchased in specialized stores or created independently.

This article will tell you how to make a cozy home for a red-eared turtle.

When choosing the size and type of aquarium it is necessary to take into account the dimensions of an adult animal and the characteristics of its body. Red-skinned turtles spend a lot of time under water or at the bottom of an artificial reservoir where they feel safe.

The volume of the aquarium is selected depending on the size and number of turtles. For one turtle 13 cm long or a pair of young individuals 10 cm long each, a one-hundred-meter aquarium will be enough.

As it grows, the capacity is replaced by a larger one. So, for a pair of turtles 20-30 cm long, a two hundred-liter aquarium is already required. If the volume is too small, the water is polluted faster, which leads to the disease of the red-haired women.

The distance from the water level to the upper edge of the aquarium should be at least 15-20 cm.

Pontoon turtle – swimming reptile. In addition to water, it is vital to the land on which it is heated and gets an ultraviolet tan.

The recommended size of the land area is at least 25% of the total area of the aquarium. The island is preferably firmly attached to the base of the tank.

The tank should be equipped with a lid, so that the pets could not move it and get out, but at the same time it is well breathable.

The recommended water temperature for a snail turtle is 23-28 ° C. The temperature on the shaded (cold) island should be 23-25 ° С, and on the brightly lit (warm) area – 28-32 ° С.

This is an absolutely ideal option for arranging temperature conditions that are most suitable for a red-eared turtle.

Heating is necessary to create such temperature conditions. The main heating is carried out using a special lamp, which is fixed above one of the islands.

If the temperature during heating the lamp is insufficient, then apply additional heating.

You can use a heater in the form of a long glass tube that is immersed in water. Particular attention should be paid to its location: the tortoise should not be able to accidentally bite the electric wire or damage its shell.

The basic principle of the choice of scenery is safety. Do not use objects from environmentally hazardous materials with sharp corners or edges.

Ground for the bottom should not be very small, as turtles can sometimes swallow it. Also, the shallow soil is quickly polluted and poorly cleaned.

It is better to use a pebble fraction of 5-6 cm.

For young turtles you can plant green plants and run the fish. Adults do not need soil, and they can eat or damage plants and fish.

In an aquarium with red-eared turtles artificial plastic or silk plants will be appropriate. In the ground they are fixed with the help of goods.

Artificial lianas can also be installed on the islands.

To decorate the terrarium, you can use a variety of snags, grottoes, unusual stones and other elements. Snags should not be fresh, as they will release harmful substances into the water.

It is better to take pieces of wood that have lain for a long time in the water of any reservoir. The bark of them must be removed.

There are aquariums in which red-eared turtles cannot be categorically maintained:

  1. Little turtles up to 50-70 liters. They can only be used for temporary housing. If a turtle lives in such a capacity for a long time, then it develops skin infectious diseases, dystrophy and softening of the shell.
  2. Aquariums in which the land is made of plastic.
  3. Aquariums in which it is impossible to set the desired temperature, as well as ultraviolet and filtration. The absence of all these conditions leads to disease and death of turtles.

Thus, the care of the red-eared turtle, as well as any other pet, requires some effort. But a terrarium in which the water is clean, the bottom is picturesque, and the animals are healthy – this is a fascinating sight that is worth the time and effort.

Aquaterrarium for the eared turtle – content care photo description.

A properly equipped aquarium with adequate size is necessary for keeping domesticated turtles at home. It would be more correct to call it aquaterrarium, since such a reservoir contains not only water space, but also an island of land.

Buy housing for turtles can be in the spec. stores or do it yourself.

Since the reptile is quite demanding to the place of residence, you need to know how to properly equip an aquarium for a red-eared turtle. Your pet’s home should be as close as possible to its natural habitat.

Only in this case, your ward will be healthy and happy in its own way.

Approach to the choice of an aquarium should be based on the size of your red-eared pet or (if you have a young individual) take immediately “for growth”. Keep in mind. that in a few years a tiny little turtle the size of a peach seed will turn into an adult individual the size of a saucer.

The optimal size of the aquarium, depending on the size of the turtle:

  • babies from 3 to 10 cm – 50 liters;
  • young turtles from 10 to 16 cm – 80 liters;
  • big turtles from 17 to 25 cm – 150 liters;
  • adult animals – from 150 liters.

In order to prevent the runner from escaping, the top of the aquaterrarium should be covered with a lid that allows air to pass through well.

The snail turtle leads a sedentary lifestyle, spending a lot of time not only in the water, but also on the shore, so you need to equip at least one, and preferably several land areas per one turtle (one shaded and the other in a brightly lit warm place). ). On land, the turtle receives oxygen and enjoys the UV rays.

What is important to consider?

  • The land plot should occupy no less than a quarter of the total bottom area.
  • Land areas should have a sloping, smoothly rising from the bottom of the coast. Steep cliffs are not allowed. You can build a ladder or a mini-ladder, put a large stone or a grotto with flat walls.
  • The surface of the islands should be made of quality materials and be rough. If there is a ground on the island, then it should not crumble into the water.
  • If there are several turtles, then the land should have such a total area that all individuals simultaneously have access to it and can fit.
  • If there are several islets, some of them may not be completely dry, but covered with water by a few millimeters.

The island should be located about 30 cm below the edge of the terrarium so that the animal does not climb out and run away.

How to equip a terrarium for a red-eared turtle, tell the leading channel “Carousel”:

Plants in the dwelling of the red-ea plant planted does not make sense. Your pet will eat or dig up without thinking twice. You can try to decorate the aquarium with artificial plants, commercially available, securely securing them at the bottom.

You can even do without plants, decorating the aquarium with various snags, unusual stones, etc. But keep in mind: snags need to take only those who have lain for a long time in the water.

Fresh wood is no good.

An interestingly designed aquarium for red-eared turtles will add zest to any interior. But do not forget that when choosing decorations, you first need to think about the safety of your pet.

What caused this situation? The fact is that it is quite easy to care for this bug, besides it has a very expressive color.

The red-turtle grows very quickly: in 5 years its shell reaches 30 cm in diameter. This funny creature has been living for at least 30 years, but for this it is necessary to ensure proper care of this turtle:

  • first, the red-eared adult individual will require an aquarium with a volume of at least 200 liters;
  • secondly, young turtles need to be fed every day, adults – three times a week;
  • thirdly, in winter the red-eared turtle needs heating by means of a special ultraviolet lamp.

The next species is the swamp bug. This is a domestic reptile representative. Caring for it requires, above all, a special approach to nutrition.

The fact is that this turtle is a true predator by nature. From this it follows that it can not be fed only plant food, otherwise the small predator will lose its energy and become ill.

There is one more important detail that care for such a turtle suggests: it should not be let out of the aquarium for a walk. The fact is that drafts in the apartment / house can cause serious harm to the health of the reptile.

If you want to have a turtle, then consider, first of all, the following: turtles walk along the bottom of the aquarium, but they cannot breathe under water. Therefore, periodically, any aquatic bug pops up for breath. That is why it is important that the water level was not too high.

Otherwise, such an inexperienced content of turtles will lead to their death.

Now let’s talk about other nuances that also need attention. So, when choosing a soil for turtles should stay on the river sand with fine gravel.

However, many species of aquarium turtles can do without soil.

You will also need to add a few plants to the aquarium. First, they are eaten by turtles, and secondly, it will decorate the habitat.

To equip the correct aquarium for turtles, you need:

  1. provide a large enough area of the bottom. In this case, you should not dwell on the altitude. Almost all species of turtles can live in aquariums with a height of up to 20 cm;
  2. to equip a small island. Although small aquarium turtles are constantly in the water, they sometimes tend to appear on the shore – in order to lay eggs. And for this they just need an island. Even if you do not intend to breed turtles, make sure such an island. Also install a lamp above it, then the turtles will have the opportunity to bask in the improvised “sun”. This is very important, since aquatic turtles are cold-blooded; therefore, the degree of mobility depends on their body temperature.

Among other pets, turtles stand somewhat apart. They do not require as much attention as cats or dogs. Keep the aquarium clean, maintain a constant temperature, light above it, and provide food.

They rarely get sick, and their diet is very diverse. This funny creature can live with you in the same apartment for decades.

Domestic turtles live well in a simple aquarium, and in the wild, these animals live in fresh water over vast areas. Where the scientists were not able to find out the birthplace of these creatures. Green turtles got their name for the original red stripes on the head (“ears”).

They can live in your home for up to 30 years. Determine the floor can be a pet only in five or six years. Males are more active, and their nails, paws and neck are somewhat larger than those of women.

Although in their overall size, females are noticeably larger for males. During courtship, gentlemen emit a hiss and attract the attention of females, shaking in front of her head with their paws.

Aquaterrarium for these creatures can be made of glass or plastic, and it should consist of 30% of the land. The remaining 70% is a body of water.

The size of the aquarium for small turtles should be selected taking into account the fact that they can reach a size of 30 centimeters in a few years.

The size of the aquarium based on the size of the turtle:

  • the smallest 3-10 cm – up to 50 l;
  • medium size 10-16 cm – up to 80 liters;
  • large up to 25 cm – up to 150 liters;
  • for adults – 120 – 170 l.

Registration of an aquarium for the puppy can be started from the ground. Different glass pebbles do not fit, because the pet can simply bite them.

Sand and small pebbles can enter the intestines. It is best to collect large shells, which will make your aquarium beautiful and at the same time a little saturate the water with calcium. Also suitable and a variety of special blocks of minerals.

From the equipment it is necessary to purchase an incandescent lamp to maintain the temperature, which is located above the shore and include it for 10-12 hours. The temperature in this zone should be about 20 degrees.

The temperature of the water is maintained with a standard aquarium heater. You need to add a water filter and a compressor to it to saturate it with oxygen.

Still acquire ultraviolet lamps. Their light contributes to the production of vitamins D3 and the normal growth of the shell.

The shore in the aquarium for the red-eared turtle is made inclined with a small ramp. It can be made of plastic, plastered with stones or pebbles.

It is possible to use various branches for decoration. Here your pet will sunbathe under the lamp, which we have at a height of 30 cm from the coast.

If young individuals are predators, then adults belong to omnivorous animals, eating and vegetable food. Low-fat small fish suit for this completely, the turtle will eat it entirely. It is good to take hake, perch, cod or crucian, but it is better not to use capelin, sprat or sprat for frequent feeding.

They are very fond of fish roe. Adults eat fish with their heads, and young people need to cut it into pieces. If young turtles need to be fed every day, then large animals – only 2-3 times a week.

Fish can be alternated with seafood: crabs, shrimp, octopus, squid. But they need to be heated to room temperature.

Additional food may be insects: locust, grasshoppers, mealworms, snails, washed earthworms, bloodworms. Be careful with the tracks, they can cause poisoning.

Dry food can be included, but fish and seafood should be required. In the second year of life, the turtle can also be fed meat.

Fatty varieties are better to exclude, but poultry and beef are sometimes suitable. But in meat there is a lot of protein and not enough calcium and vitamins.

It is better to give it a little, just once a week. Useful for turtles chicken or beef liver, rich in vitamin A. Vegetable food is best given to grown turtles, who have already gained a little weight, throwing it in thin pieces directly into the water. But not all turtles love it.

Leaves of lettuce, cabbage, dandelion or dried sea kale will do. You can cut into thin slices vegetables and fruits, but spicy herbs (dill or parsley) are preferred by only a few specimens.

It is quite simple to equip an aquarium for a red-eared turtle, and the maintenance of such a pet will not bring much trouble. Only for more than an hour without water, do not hold them so that the skin does not dry out.

If you start taking them from your very young age, they will get used to the person and do not bite. You can even get a couple of turtles at home so that they have more fun.

Due to the fact that red-eared turtles are poikilothermic animals, their state of health is determined mainly by environmental conditions. One of its most important components is good lighting.

For these purposes, UV lamps are most often used in aquariums, as well as incandescent lamps and some others.

In order to create lighting for a red-eared turtle in an aquarium, it is permissible to use several types of lamps.

For small and medium aquariums, you can use a standard incandescent lamp that has become familiar to many. However, keep in mind that this lamp will burn at least 12 hours a day.

Therefore, pay maximum attention to its quality and durability.

An alternative to incandescent lamp can serve as a mirror lamp. Having a mirror coating, it allows you to create a directional stream of light. The power of a mirror lamp should be less than that of an incandescent lamp.

The highest power of the lamps used for daylight, have gas-discharge mercury lamps.

For the dark, the best option is an infrared lamp: not giving visible light, it can simultaneously perform the function of a heating element. A ceramic lamp can also be a good option for night lighting: it should be placed at least 50 centimeters from the animal.

A special role in the aquarium is played by the UV lamp, which also creates lighting for the turtle.

Vitamin D3 is needed to keep a turtle healthy. Despite the fact that a considerable amount of this substance enters the body of an animal with food, the need for it does not diminish at all.

To solve this problem allows the presence in the aquarium a reliable source of ultraviolet radiation.

It is necessary to place UV lamps in an aquarium so that they are at a distance of about 50 centimeters from the animal and they are not separated by obstacles in the form of a curtain or glass. It is necessary to change ultraviolet lamps every six months due to the fact that over time they significantly lose power.

Proper lighting of the aquarium will allow you not only to improve its visibility, but also to solve an equally important problem of thermoregulation and maintain the constancy of the internal environment of the room in which the turtle is located.
