What is the name of food for aquarium fish and which one is better to choose

Aquarium fish – not just the decoration of the bedroom or living room. Children and many adults give birth to them simply as pets.

In order for the fish to be healthy and feel good, it is necessary to create comfortable conditions for them, as close as possible to the natural ones. This also applies to a properly selected aquarium, water hardness and temperature, as well as the choice of fish food.

Few people think that the already short life of aquarium fish can be greatly reduced with the wrong preparation of the diet. Even amateur aquarians are familiar with the regeneration of water and its filtration, but with the rules for selecting feed for aquarium fish come in real shock.

Proper nutrition affects all aspects of the normal functioning of the body of a pet. It affects the appearance of the fish, their immunity and ability to reproduce.

When choosing a dry fish food, remember that his main task is to help, not harm, therefore, it is necessary to choose the composition that can not worsen the state of water in the aquarium. For example, some dry flakes tend to soak and break in water, thus being a source of organic blockages.

The same applies to rapidly disintegrating low-quality feed pellets.

Small particles are deposited on the ground, water filter, scenery and decompose there. Some components can poison water or pollute it.

When asking what kind of fish food is better, you should remember that the diet of pets should be as close as possible to their diet in their natural habitat. You can add other nutrients to the feed, especially in the case of beneficial vitamins and minerals.

However, one should not try to feed the little fish that lives in the waters of Baikal with rare larvae, which can be found only in the warm southern seas.

To make the fish feel as comfortable as possible in the aquarium, it is enough to reproduce the percentage ratio of carbohydrates, fats and proteins in the bait.

For each breed of fish requires the content of certain elements. Low-calorie foods can harm pets. It is extremely important to read everything on the package before buying.

First of all it concerns dry fodder for fish in the form of chips, flakes or tablets.

But most of the ingredients contained will not only be useful for the fish, but also vital for them to ensure normal functioning and functioning of the body. First of all, these elements include:

  • Fish flour. This ingredient has nothing to do with wheat flour or rye flour – fish meal is made from crushed fish remains of various breeds. For its production takes everything that did not go into the usual commercial fish consumption. Fish meal has amino acids that are useful for aquarium fish.
  • Flour and other worms, which for any reason were not used in normal production. Most often they are added to dry food for cichlids. Useful in high protein, fat and vitamin D.
  • Squid flour. It is made from the remains of squid and other cephalopod creatures, as well as from their internal organs. Saturated with a large number of useful vitamins and minerals, the main task of which is to whet the appetite of aquarium fish.
  • Spirulina. One of the main components of any feed for aquarium fish. It turns out when chopping blue-green algae. A valuable source of essential fatty acids, minerals, eight amino acids (proteins), as well as beta-carotene and vitamins of groups A, B 1, B 2, B 6, B 12, C, E.
  • Flour from shrimp. The composition is similar to fish meal, however, has a strong pigment that is able to enhance the bright color of aquarium fish. This ingredient should not be consumed by humans, but for aquatic pets, it fits perfectly.

From time to time, various additives are also used in feeds. So that none of them could harm the body of fish, you should know exactly the list of ingredients that should not be in any dry fish food. Here are some of them:

  • Wheat flour, potato protein, sorbitol and inositol are sources of large amounts of carbohydrates, which should not be included in the regular diet of fish.
  • Wheat Gluten. Like the previous component, it is rich in carbohydrates, and is mainly used as a binder filler. Its presence in dry food is undesirable.
  • Soy flour contains too much carbohydrates, phyto-estrogens and protein. Of course, if you add it to dry food, it will not cause visible damage, but it is better to find a more suitable source of protein and stop using soy flour.

In addition to these elements, minerals and vitamins that can have a beneficial effect on the fish body must be included in the fish food. Fortunately, most of them are useful and have no contraindications.

The first thing you should pay attention to when choosing food is the breed of fish and the type of food they prefer. All fish can be divided into herbivores, omnivores and highly specialized.

And also there are purely decorative rocks that need the content of certain elements and minerals.

Herbivores prefer to eat algae, which contain all the necessary nutrients. Omnivorous should be added to the lure products of animal origin – mealworms, flour from shrimp or squid, and so on.

To feed highly specialized breeds, it is worthwhile to select specific insects, plankton or smaller fish (for example, for piranhas and related breeds).

What are the names of fish food and their main types:

  • Pills. There are a variety of sizes, as depending on the breed of fish have a different structure of the oral apparatus. Some suitable food in the form of flakes, tablets, chips, granules, and liquid. Flake food is most suitable for viviparous breeds such as guppies and mollies, as they move across the entire surface of the aquarium and are small in size. The flakes are light enough to stay on the surface for a long time, and only after they get wet, they sink to the depth. At the same time they are divided into small particles that are convenient to consume in food. Tablets are usually glued directly to the walls of the aquarium – gathering in flocks, fish pinch off small pieces from them. There are feeds in the form of balls, which act in the same way, only placed directly on the surface of the water.
  • Sticks. Perfectly suited for feeding of chain catfish, capable of sticking to hard surfaces, which is why they got their name “suckers”. They scrape off algae from stumps, corals and other objects. Therefore, their food must be quite solid, so as not to immediately dissolve in water – the catfish must still find the granules and have time to stick to them.
  • Special types. Some fish require an individual approach to their diet. For example, goldfish can be fed only with special food intended for this breed. The peculiarity of their internal structure is the absence of the stomach and the presence of an overly long intestine, which is why their main food must be products of plant origin. Dry foods, as well as high protein foods, can lead to a deterioration in the health of pets – it will be extremely difficult for fish to digest all the elements that enter the body.
  • Prikorm for the weekend. It contains several times less nutrients and their main task is to relieve the digestive system and give it a rest from regular loads. It is necessary to add such elements to the supplement at least several times a month. People who travel often should not worry about their pets. Modern manufacturers offer a wide selection of dressings that can be used during the holidays. They do not dissolve in water for a long time and allow the fish to pinch off small pieces as needed.
  • Flakes. They are made from crushed meat of squid, shrimp, yeast, ground into meat meal. They are a source of B vitamins, as well as proteins and carbohydrates. Depending on the type of feed, different versions of natural minerals and vitamins are added to it. The main disadvantage is the short shelf life – within a month after opening the package must be consumed. The most common type of food that is great not only freshwater, but also tropical, marine fish. It is best to feed the fish that live on the surface, since the flakes are quite light and do not drown in water for a long time.
  • Chips. The composition is not much different from the flakes, except for the fact that it is formed in the form of thin circles, resembling chips. Almost does not pollute the aquarium, as long does not soak and does not deteriorate. Suitable for almost all types of fish suitable for life in an aquarium.

When choosing food for aquarium fish, its composition should be carefully studied, as unscrupulous manufacturers often add useless fillers to the inside in order to increase the weight of the package and reduce the cost of the goods. Of course, there will be no harm from such elements, however, pets will more often feel hunger due to the low energy value of complementary foods.

As a result, they can damage the soil and the decorations of the aquarium, as they will constantly look for food in them.

Live food is in great demand among pets, but has a significant number of drawbacks, due to which many aquarists prefer not to use it at all. Some water bodies in which moths live can be contaminated with chemical waste and other debris. They can cause the development of fish diseases leading to death, as well as contribute to the accumulation of heavy metals in the body.

Using live food, you need to be sure that it is produced in environmentally friendly waters. In addition, this type of food is quite difficult to store: you need to regularly sort out, wash and remove garbage.

Some types of moths will have to be stored in the refrigerator, separately from the usual human food. It is better to buy live food in small quantities, so that it is easier to save, and it does not lose its value.

In the damaged organisms, bacteria are instantly infused that can provoke the development of serious diseases.

Despite the fact that it is much easier to store the top dressing in the freezing, it is better not to keep it in the refrigerator all the time – in the cold much of the beneficial properties are lost. The same applies to washing the food under a strong stream of water: from the nutritious food the body will only external cover.

To start it is necessary to determine the amount of feed. It is important that all pets are fed up, and at the same time there are no extra pieces left in the water, which, soaking and decomposing, can ruin the aquarium water.

The number of top dressing is determined as follows: if it is dry food or flakes, their number should be equal to the size of both eyes of the fish; if it is sticks or granules – slightly smaller than the diameter of the eyes. Usually, the fish are crammed with food in 5-7 minutes; more time is required only for “suckers”, like chain catfish.

Overeating causes the development of diseases of internal organs such as liver dystrophy and dropsy. In some cases, it can even lead to death.

Unlike growing fry, adult fish starvation is not as scary as excess feed. In order for the fish to develop properly, the fry should be fed up to eight times a day in small portions. For adults, one-time meal, a maximum of two meals, is suitable.

It is best to also split the food in two small portions and give it at the beginning and end of the day.

Depending on the age and characteristics of specific breeds, the amount of feed may vary.
