You made an important decision: to acquire an aquarium, it remains only to acquire everything you need. What you need to run and maintain the aquarium? – We will talk about the nuances of choosing equipment and accessories.
Actually, the aquarium. Experienced aquarists do not for nothing say that the larger the reservoir, the less hassle.
In a small aquarium, it’s really more difficult to maintain optimal conditions for fish, and they get clogged up faster. An unpretentious formula will help to avoid overcrowding: 1 liter of water should fall to 1 cm of body length of an adult fish (not counting the tail).
You can choose any form: from the classic rectangle to the prism or trapezoid. As for the material, silicate or acrylic glass is often chosen.
If the aquarium is large enough, choose a suitable cabinet or stand for it.
Lighting. The easiest option – fluorescent lamps, sealed in a sealed enclosure – they are fixed on the lid of the aquarium. At 40 centimeters depth, you need 2 pieces, for each subsequent 10 centimeters add another lamp.
If you plan to arrange an aquarium in pseudo-sea or marine style, you need to additionally buy a lamp of the cold blue spectrum – it creates an amazing effect. Duration of daylight hours – 8-12 hours.
In order not to forget to turn on the lamp in time, you can set a timer.
Filter. They can be external and internal, most filters are equipped with a so-called capsule system with different fillers. Pay attention to the power of the filter, the number of stages of cleaning, throughput, price category.
It is better to choose products of well-known manufacturers – Eheim, Aquael, Trixie, Tetra, JBL, Hagen and others. Read more – Overview of manufacturers of aquarium filters.
Compressor or aerator. Not all fish can do without it: labyrinths, for example, swallow oxygen from atmospheric air, but species that breathe exclusively with gills get everything they need only from water.
It is better to turn on the aerator when the light in the aquarium is turned off: the easiest way is to set two timers: one for lighting and the other for the aerator.
Heater. To maintain a certain water temperature will need a heater. It will be better if it is equipped with a built-in thermostat (mechanical or electronic).
If you need to cool the water, make regular changes or buy special refrigeration units. The choice of heater power is calculated as follows: 10 watts is required for 4.5 liters of water.
For larger aquariums, several weaker devices are bought so that the water warms evenly.
Soil and vegetation. Pebbles, granite, basalt, rounded stones, large river sand – the choice of soil depends on which species of fish you prefer.
It is better to buy natural soil, without additional dyes. Also remember that seashells or marble can increase water hardness. Read more – What is the best aquarium soil?
As for the flora, it is better to give preference to the combination of living and artificial plants. Live ones are good because they take part in the process of biological water purification, and some fish are ready to eat.
Artificial will be used as an additional shelter.
Aquarium maintenance devices. These include siphon (it removes excess organic matter from the soil), glass cleaning scraper (you can buy hard sponges), two nets, a bucket, tweezers or tweezers (in case you need to get something from the bottom or plant the plants, to correct the scenery), the tank-brew (for the first time will go the usual bank), as well as a feeder for fish.
You will also need a set of feed, mineral supplements for plants, the rest can be purchased as needed.
Decorative items. These include snags, grottoes, shells, caves, broken flower pots.
They should not be unnecessarily bulky, toxic, have sharp corners or narrow cracks into which the fish can clog, and will not be able to get out. Observe stylization: it is unlikely that a clay flower pot is appropriate in a pseudo-sea aquarium.
Residents. What is an aquarium without inhabitants? In addition to fish, you can buy snails or catfish, which will eat harmful algae and clean the glass.
Do not overcrowd the aquarium, carefully check the breed for compatibility, so that it does not happen that one fine morning you miss half of the fish. We wish you good luck!
