Water heaters for aquarium with thermostatic heating

Since fish are cold-blooded animals, they cannot maintain a constant body temperature and need a warm environment. Freshwater fish are comfortable in water with a temperature of 24−29 ° C, and tropical fish prefers a range of 24−26 ° C. It’s very difficult to hold such indicators manually, so it’s worth getting a heater for an aquarium.

It’s easy to choose the right option yourself, the main thing is to understand the functions and differences.

In fact, the heater is an integral part of any aquarium, so after purchasing the product itself, filling, lighting and filter, the question arises of maintaining the same water temperature.

There are several types of aquarium heaters: external (the heating element is not outside) and internal (the heating element is inside). External heaters are available in several versions:

  • flow;
  • thermofilters;
  • Sometimes there are heaters in the sump.

A more budget and popular option is the internal heating. Internal heaters are available in three versions:

All heaters also need a thermostat to turn the heater on and off in order to autonomously maintain the required temperature.

Flow-through thermostats are usually installed in the water circulation system of the external filter. And it also requires a powerful water pump to move the water.

If it is not possible to purchase a pump, the filter capacity will do. Water is pumped out of the tank through a tube with a heater, and the heated water is returned back.

And also there are models of aquarium filters with built-in heating element. They heat the water when it passes through the filter, returning the heated and purified water to the aquarium.

Typically, these filters are inside and are usually embedded in the filter.

Sometimes found heating element in the sump filter or pallet heaters. A heater for an aquarium with a thermostat in a sump is nothing more than an immersion heater for an aquarium that is installed in the sump of the filter, and not in the aquarium itself.

This configuration provides better security for the fish, minimizing the risk that the fish will accidentally fry. And the probability of breakage during operation or when cleaning the tank is also reduced.

Suspended heaters are the most common and least expensive heating systems. Almost all store kits for launch contain a hanging thermal heater.

Suspended aquarium heater with a thermostat will provide a constant temperature while in the water itself. It is important to note that suspended models can be dangerous for saltwater saltwater aquariums, as salt can get into the tube and cause a fire.

Submersible Aquarium Heaters can be completely submerged in water. Due to this, they are more efficient than overhead heaters. Submersible models can be placed vertically, horizontally, or at an angle; however, they work best when mounted vertically or horizontally.

If the immersion heater has an internal thermostat, it will be more efficient in a horizontal position.

Immersion heaters are usually attached to the back of an aquarium using a suction cup clip. It is important to keep the device away from gravel, as there is a big difference between the thermal conductivity of water and gravel.

And it is also important to provide sufficient space between the heater and the walls of the tank to ensure that no fish will get stuck behind the appliance and will not burn.

Plant heaters are the least common model of internal heaters. Such devices are a special thermal mat or thermal cord, which are placed on the bottom of the aquarium, and then filled with soil.

Thus, when the thermal heater is on, the heat flows evenly from the bottom up.

It is believed that such devices are particularly useful for newly planted plants, as in normal conditions the soil remains cool. Due to the heating of the substrate, this problem is eliminated.

However, it should be noted that due to the increase in temperature of the water in the aquarium, the plants need more light, as well as special feeding. Otherwise, the new leaves will be weak and lifeless, and the general condition of the plants will deteriorate sharply.

First of all, before using the heater, you need to choose a suitable place to install the device. First of all, it is important for the safety of fish, which always strive to get into some kind of shelter.

For greater confidence, you can add more varieties of scenery and plants to the tank so that the fish have something to do.

By location it is not recommended to place an aquarium near drafts, uninsulated walls or in cold basements. Otherwise, the thermostat will not be able to heat the water to the desired temperature.

Before the first start-up of the device, the thermostat should be pre-set at a low temperature to allow the water to gradually heat up and prevent cracks in the glass due to the temperature difference when the electric heater is turned on.

Similarly, it is important to turn off the heater half an hour before removing it from the aquarium. This is necessary so that the thermostat glass shell cools down. Thus, the main safety recommendations are as follows:

  1. Always let the device cool before getting out of the water.
  2. After installing the heater, you need to wait at least 30 minutes before turning it on.
  3. Always ensure that the cord and plug are dry when plugged in.

For better heat circulation, it is recommended to place heaters under or behind the filter. In addition, you should not install decorations or other foreign objects directly in front of the stream.

It is important to ensure that there is water between the heater and any other surface. If the glass shell of the device touches the walls, gravel or decorations, there is a possibility of the development of destructive processes in the glass.

To find a good heater, you need to take into account the volume of the aquarium. To do this, remember a simple formula for calculating the power: 5 watts per 3.5 liters for aquariums up to 180 liters.

3 Watts for 3.5 liters for cans from 180 liters. If one heater is not able to cover the entire volume, then you have to take the second or even the third (depending on the needs).

Complete with a thermal heater, it is advisable to buy a thermometer for accurate temperature setting. Additional adjustments to the heaters may be required to achieve the desired water temperature depending on the ambient temperature and the location of the aquarium.

Heater for aquarium with thermostat can not be replaced by improvised means. Many newcomers refuse the heater and instead choose undemanding fish.

Of course, you can consider this option, but in the winter, it will be more and more difficult to maintain the desired temperature.
