maintenance, care, compatibility
For inexperienced aquarists, this whole set of necessary devices for comfortable living of fish, plants and other aquatic inhabitants may seem complicated. And if everything is more or less clear with the filter and compressor, not everyone knows what a sterilizer is for in an aquarium.
Let’s figure it out together.
The filter sterilizer for a marine aquarium is especially important and simply necessary. It significantly reduces the likelihood of the disease of fish, eliminates the likelihood of bacterial outbreaks and the so-called water bloom.
Of course, the sterilizer is not able to overcome the already flared up disease or epidemic. Rather, it is suitable as a preventive measure.
It reduces fouling of the walls of the aquarium, increases the redox process.
The filter sterilizer cannot be turned on immediately after the launch of the biofilter, as well as during the period of introduction of vitamin supplements and drugs. But at the time of landing in the aquarium new fish sterilizer must work.
Water purification is an important process for maintaining order in the aquarium. Purification requires not only biological, mechanical and chemical, but also bacterial.
Biological purification occurs at the expense of aquarium cleaners, mechanical and chemical – at the expense of the filter, and UV treatment can provide bacterial treatment.
The sterilizer helps to destroy harmful bacteria, viruses, algae, fungi, and microorganisms (protozoa) due to radioactive radiation. It prevents the reproduction and transfer of pests in the aquarium, and also destroys them in a certain mode. Including sterilizer is applicable when:
- eliminating the effects of bacterial outbreaks;
- mass disease or death of inhabitants;
- quarantine fish.
It is important to install UVC as the last link in filtration, when biological, mechanical and chemical treatments have already been passed, because the filtered water has greater transparency, does not contain impurities and dirt, which delay the action and pollute the device.
What else can be used for antibacterial water treatment?
It is important to remember that continuous or excessive use can harm the fish due to water heating.
Also, do not use an ultraviolet sterilizer during the launch of the aquarium. This will slow down the process of establishing biochemical balance.
It must be remembered that the sterilizer destroys not only harmful microorganisms, but also useful, which decompose organic matter.
Do not use the device when using fertilizers or drugs (especially based on copper)! When irradiated with water with fertilizer impurities or drugs, substances dangerous to the inhabitants of the aquarium may be released.
During the operation of the UVC, the water in the aquarium becomes cleaner not only in its composition, but also visually, because this device kills bacteria, leading to the formation of dregs in the aquarium.
The sterilizer is safe for plants, fish and other inhabitants, as it destroys only flow microorganisms and viruses, bacteria. Useful bacteria will not be destroyed if used properly, because they are located not only in running water, but also on all surfaces of the aquarium.
In conclusion, we can say that the UV sterilizer can absolutely not be useful for small aquariums with well-established biochemical balance, plants and healthy fish.
It may be needed in large aquariums, when quarantined, during frequent bacterial outbreaks, massive fish diseases and other problems associated with the purity of the water.
