Hello, friends! Somiki are an indispensable attribute of almost any aquarium.
Quite often, you can hear how aquarists, in their ignorance and inexperience, buy little catfish, and then clutch their heads. After a couple of months, small and harmless catfish turn into solid “piglets”, carrying chaos and other minor problems to the aquarium as a whole.
Today we will reflect on how to design an aquarium for catfish.
When soma matures, they can burst smaller fish and relatives larger. A lot of representatives of hydrobionts who prefer vegetation, as they grow older, young shoots begin to bark.
Almost all nightmare catfish and the peak of their activity occurs in the dark. During the day, they usually hide in secluded corners and calmly rest, gaining strength before the night.
They are activated only in the evening days. If you can’t do anything with the night guys, you can still create something with the twilight catfish, for example, to cut them rations.
If you are planning to get yourself a somovnik, then you will need an aquarium of at least 200 liters. Aeration of the aquarium and filtration is a must in the banks of this nature. Just do not forget about the mandatory heating of water, having bought a solid heater that can maintain a water temperature of 24-27 degrees in such a container.
For somovnika bright lighting is not a mandatory attribute, it is better that the light was muted. But still, as an option, create a decent amount of secluded places in the aquarium, otherwise you will not see your pets during the day.
The main objects of the somovnik decor are snags and stones. And snags, in addition to excellent shelter, also provide locomid catfish and synodontis with nourishing cellulose. But the vegetation in aquariums with catfish mostly artificial use.
For such large fish try to plant some live grass. For the revival of the upper and middle layers of water, you can hook up to catfish alestovy tetras, distykhodusy and other fairly nimble neighbors, whose sizes are medium and large.
And finally, we need to understand a great many representatives of cat-like. We need to know which species are suitable for aquariums, and which ones should not even be started at all.
I want to start with one of the most popular catfish – the corridor. In the vast family of Kallichtids there is a great variety of fish from the order Coridoras and congenial brochises, dianes, aspids. In some loneliness in this detachment there are somas, larger ones – hoplotherums.
Despite the similarity of these fish among themselves, there are many fish in this family with different behaviors and lifestyles.
Another very popular group of catfish is lacarium. The undisputed leaders in this family are pterigopliht and antsistrus.
These two representatives of locorites are great at eating algae, bacterial wrap and other organic matters from the ground, curtains and stones. In comparison with antsistrus, Pterigoplicht grows extremely fast, which causes the aquarist to have a dilemma: what to do with a huge catfish, which is larger than the size of an aquarium.
There are a lot of fish in the family of locomites that you will not see during the day, as they sit all day in thickets of plants, in heaps of stones and snags.
A huge family of catfish rewarded aquarists with such a pet as a glass catfish. In aquariums he doesn’t clean anything like ancistrus or girinoheylus, but this catfish can be safely advised in almost any decorative aquarium.
Glass catfish is a schooling and beautiful fish that barely hides and lives in the water column and prefers a fast current. Please note that crypterus is a schooling fish, so I do not recommend you to buy less than 6 individuals.
The fish is peaceful, small and perfectly compatible with small harazinki, such as red neons.
It would be desirable to note the faraway soms, among which there are various representatives of this family by habits and way of life. These include small catfish-shifters who prefer to actively move during the day.
But the overwhelming majority of catfish of this family are large enough and they are not suitable for small aquariums with peaceful fish, since they will start eating their smaller neighbors in the pond.
All that is said about synodontis can also be attributed to killer som. Bagriuses, mystuses and other representatives of this family are beautiful as a teenager, but then they grow into large predators and begin to eat their neighbors.
The exception to this cohort is the Amur killer whale, which is a magnificent beautiful little catfish.
For a short time, I want to dwell on the clariouse catfish, among which the Angolan klarias is sold as an aquarium fish. But in its homeland, this fish is commercial for its impressive size and great taste.
And finally, it would be blasphemy not to recall the poppy-making catfish. This family of fish comes from South America, among which there are a lot of interesting specimens.
Among the representatives of this family there are fish from several centimeters to several hundred kilograms. Their only common feature is the long whiskers, which sometimes grow larger than the length of the fish itself.
