The maintenance of tropical fish in an aquarium without heating the water is simply unthinkable. The only exception is cold-blooded fish, which do not need heating at all. Without heating equipment in an aquarium, life cannot last for long.
Heating equipment includes heaters, thermostat and thermometer. But let’s understand in order.
You can buy the above items separately and in a set. When buying a kit, the heater and thermostat will be enclosed in a general case.
If you have these two devices independent, then you need to first connect them to each other. With paired devices less hassle, just insert the plug into the socket and voila.
But such a device has one major drawback. When a heater fails, an aquarist will have to pay more for repairs than if they were two separate devices.
The approximate power of the heater is calculated based on the proportion: 1 W of power is needed for 1 liter of water. Of course, for various cases there is no one general requirement, so when buying a heater, it is better to consult with the seller. Also recommendations from the manufacturer, which are indicated on the package with the device, will help you a lot.
They have the form of schematic drawings. The heater must be installed in the aquarium so that the water temperature in it is the same at all levels. Thus you can not harm the fish and plants.
Measure the temperature needed at the ground and near the surface. The maximum allowable temperature difference should not exceed 2 degrees.
You can equalize the temperature index by layers using filtration of aquarium water.
To date, you can purchase the following types of heaters for the aquarium:
- Spiral Heaters. They have the appearance of a glass flask sealed with a rubber stopper. Through this tube passes the wire to the ceramic core, which is wound wire. Such heaters perfectly move around the aquarium without causing inconvenience to the population of the reservoir;
- Heating mats. Such heaters are placed under the aquarium and heating takes place through the bottom of the tank. Some experts believe that heating the soil has a beneficial effect on the roots of aquarium plants, because you will not find such a method of heating in nature. The only and significant drawback of heating mats is that when they fail, you will have to raise the aquarium, which is not very convenient, especially if its volume is from 100 liters;
- Heating cables. In their functionality, they are similar to heating mats, they only fit into the aquarium soil. Such cables are used in wet greenhouses. These cables are laid straight into the ground. The usefulness of the cables is the same as the heating mats. Fortunately, removing a bad cable is much easier than getting a rug out from under the aquarium. The only drawback of the cables is that, when removed, the aquarium interior can be seriously disturbed. Also be careful with heavy decorations, such as stones, because they can seriously damage the cable.
- Twin heaters with thermostat. As a rule, the design of such a device is quite simple: a heater in the form of a spiral is enclosed in a single glass flask with a bimetallic thermostat. These two devices are already connected to the same circuit, so the aquarist does not need to connect anything, just plug in the socket. This device must be fixed strictly in an upright position, otherwise the thermostat will turn off prematurely.
As a rule, thermostats for an aquarium have a strictly limited range of work, as it must be appropriate for keeping tropical fish. The working temperature can be set by turning the adjusting screw.
Some types of thermostats have a temperature scale with varying degrees of accuracy. If the scale you did not see on your device, you will have to put the regulator “by eye”. Virtually all modern temperature controllers with heaters have an indicator light that signals that the device is connected to the network.
It does not matter whether the device is working now or not.
Today, only a couple of types of thermostats are widely found: electronic and electromechanical. Not long ago, electromechanical submersible thermostats were widely used.
The main device that combines the thermostat and the heater is a bimetallic plate. But more reliable are electronic thermostats.
Only in the beginning, they can show off and fail after installation in the aquarium.
Thermal filter is a device that simultaneously performs the functions of water heating and filtration. If you think that such a tandem is very convenient, then I will hasten to precipitate a little, because such devices are very expensive and in case of deterioration of the water flow the aquarium will freeze at you.
In addition, both devices cannot operate on the same fuse.
How to fix the heaters
Basically, the heaters are attached to the walls of the aquarium with the help of special suckers, which stubbornly do not want to stay at a given place. Over time, the rubber on the suction cups will begin to crack and they will cease to carry out their primary functions. In this case, they can be attached to the wall of the aquarium with silicone sealant.
However, then you will not be able to rearrange the heater to another place, as the suction cups stick tightly. Therefore, it is better to leave your choice on silicone suction cups, which serve for years.
