Few aquarists attach great importance to the length of daylight in their aquarium with plants. Most of the plants come from tropical latitudes, and there the duration of daylight hours is 12 hours.
Taking into account the refractive index of water – the normal illumination in water does not exceed the threshold of 10 hours. It is this value that should be a guide for aquarists. There are no real numbers of the length of daylight as plants in our aqua are collected from different parts of the world.
So at your disposal the range from 9 to 11 hours, and then adjust to yourself.
It is also necessary to take into account the power of lighting in your bank, the higher it is, the less light day and vice versa, for example, with high light power you should not increase the length of daylight above 10 hours, if not too powerful – you can increase the duration of lighting up to 12 hours or more . But if you have very poor lighting, this does not mean that the aquarium can be kept lit around the clock, it only means that the power of lighting for plants must be increased.
For beginners, it’s worth understanding two basic rules:
- If green algae began to multiply abundantly in your aquarium, then you should reduce the length of daylight by 1-2 hours.
- Long daylight hours never replace the lack of light in an aquarium.
Also a minus of a long daylight is additional stress for your fish population. It is also worth mentioning that a considerable stress factor for fish is the sharp switching on and off of the lighting in the aquarium, so if there is a possibility, install a device for smoothly turning on the lamps in the aquarium for at least two minutes to full brightness.
If there are no plants in your tank, the daylight duration for fish can be kept for about 8-9 hours so that they feel comfortable.
