Temperature controller to control the temperature of the water in the aquarium

The temperature in the aquarium should be kept at a stable level. A 2–4 degree change may adversely affect the health of the fish.

Most of the individuals have a tropical origin and a comfortable existence for them is possible only at 23–27 degrees. In tanks with a small volume, temperature drops occur faster, therefore it is necessary to install a thermostat for an aquarium.

To create a comfortable environment for plants and fish allows an aquarium heater. There are several types of such devices operating according to the same principle – in hermetic conditions, the element is heated by electricity. Commonly used heaters:

  1. Submersible. Made of glass, plastic or titanium. It is a heat-resistant body in the form of a cylinder or flask, into which a heating element is embedded. This device is immersed in water.
  2. Flow through. It has a plastic housing that is installed vertically on a return hose connected to an external filter. This arrangement saves space inside the aquarium and allows you to deliver a stream of aerated water of the desired temperature.
  3. Heating cables. They are located under a layer of soil, warming the entire surface evenly and ensure the circulation of water masses.
  4. Heating mats. Rectangular rugs, mounted under the aquarium. Heat passes through the bottom and evenly increases the temperature inside the tank.

The power of the device for heating should be 1 W per liter of water, but 0.7–0.8 W per 1 l is often enough.

When operating the heater, you need to constantly monitor the temperature in the aquarium. Reaching the required level, the device will continue heating.

You need to turn it off manually. Aquarium thermostat can solve this problem.

The built-in sensor that detects the temperature helps to turn off the heating element after reaching the desired value of degrees. Re-start occurs when the water cools. This mode allows you to keep the microclimate in a stable condition, excluding temperature drops.

Modern thermal controllers for aquarium have compact dimensions and easy setup. There are two types of devices according to the method of manufacture:

  1. Electronic. They differ in accuracy, which is achieved by displaying information on an electronic scoreboard. But these devices are quite expensive and not very reliable.
  2. Mechanical. The most popular option. They work reliably and stably, have a reasonable price. Their temperature indicators are less accurate than electronic counterparts (usually the difference is a few degrees). An additional thermometer is used to more accurately determine the level of heating.

Electronic Thermocontroller for Aquarium

Duration of operation and safety contribute to the separation of thermostats into two groups:

  1. Portable Located in the aquarium, resistant to water and organic debris. They can serve for a long time, allow you to apply cheap versions of heaters that are easy to replace. A temperature sensor that determines the operation of the device is connected to the thermostat through a wire.
  2. Inline. Located together with a heater in an insulated housing. This arrangement makes the device more compact and more convenient to use.

Built-in structures are more often used by aquarists and made of an elongated glass bulb with a thermostat and an electric heating element. High thermal conductivity is achieved with the help of fine ceramic filler, which is poured into a glass cylinder.

The power cord passes through a plastic or rubber cap to ensure the tightness of the device. The temperature is set via the regulator.

The most famous firms are Fluval, Tetra, Eheim, Aquael, Ferplast. They produce immersion heaters equipped with a thermostat of 25–300 W of power.

These devices are of high quality and have shown reliability in operation. They can be used in aquariums with a volume of up to 1500 liters. The use of several thermostats with low power reduces the risk of overheating of water.

Hydor External Aquarium Heater ETH – external regulator of water temperature in the aquarium. Available in 200 and 300 watts.

The length of the wire is 1.4 m. It can be used in containers from 100 to 300 liters. The temperature range is 18-34 degrees. Internal diameter of hoses – from 12 to 16 mm.

The heater is located in the area of movement of water masses, which allows you to maintain a stable temperature and save energy. The RTS system ensures instrument safety.

The body is made of high-strength plastic, has a light indicator and a regulator of work. Cost – 4260−4645 p.

Thermostat for aquarium Aqua One Betta Glass Preset Heater is suitable for tanks up to 10 liters. Device power – 10 W, price – 830 p.

The automatic thermostat Tetra HT 75 is used in aquariums of 60–100 l. The temperature setting range is 19–31 degrees (increment is 0.5). The device has a sealed case with a lid and can be immersed in water.

There is a light indicator for monitoring the operation and an electrical switch. Heavy-duty Borosilikat glass with a thickness of 2 mm is resistant to high temperature.

The device is mounted on the suction cup. Model cost – 1086 p.

Model Hailea 400 mm long and 150 watts. Made of glass, suitable for containers of 150–300 l. Price – 875 p.

The Fluval E heater features an LCD display that displays temperature and changes color. Power – 100 W, operates in the range of 20-34 C, has a digital microprocessor, is safe to use. Used with aquariums 60−120 l. The cost of the device – 3774 p.

Being engaged in the assembly of the heating device, do not forget about the risk of electric shock during the operation of the structure. For the manufacture of the device you will need: a part of a thick glass tube, resistors, a remote-controlled thermostat, a dry filler.

How to make a simple thermostat with your own hands

The order of work is as follows:

  1. Calculated heater power. To do this, a special table compares the indices of room temperature and that required in an aquarium. As a result of dividing the selected power by voltage, the current value is obtained. The resistance is determined by dividing the voltage by the current. Under the total resistance and power is selected several resistors of the same type.
  2. The diameter and length of the tube is determined by the number of resistances and the size of the container. The free space after placing the resistors soldered to each other should be about 15 cm.
  3. The filler is prepared; calcined and purified sand can be used.
  4. The glass tube is closed from the bottom with a rubber stopper. Fixation is carried out on the sealant for aquariums.
  5. The network cable is soldered to the ends of the lower and upper resistors. The design is placed in a glass tube, the free space is filled with sand.
  6. The upper end of the tube is insulated with sealant. The thermostat connects to the mains wire, the remote sensor is lowered into the aquarium.
  7. The position of the heater must be vertical. Part of the bulb with resistors should be immersed in water. For installation of a design suckers are used.

The thermostat can be assembled on the basis of thermistors and comparator.
