maintenance, care, compatibility
Sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) is the strongest sturgeon fish of the cartilaginous family. In the aquarium, it does not reach such an impressive view. Sturgeon maintenance at home is possible in a large aquarium with a volume of 200 liters, with mandatory aeration and water filtration.
The sturgeon, which is contained as a decorative aquarium, looks very attractive in crystal clear water, it has a beautiful body shape. The nature of the fish is active due to the constant release of mucus on the skin – only during swimming it is completely washed off.
Natural habitat – the basins of the Black and Azov Sea, the Northern Dvina, Ob, Irtysh, Yenisei, Volga rivers. Sometimes found in the Dniester, the Danube, the Dnieper, is in the delta of the Don.
Sterlet – river fish, which occasionally comes in salty sea water. In the Volga, a half-passage sturgeon lives, often swimming in the upper part of the delta, where it spawns. Fish do not migrate en masse; in early autumn, groups gather at the bottom, where they spend the winter without touching the food.
In early spring, when the ice begins to descend, the river sturgeon rises from the pit, moves down the river in order to lay eggs.
Body color of sterlet varies from dark to light, depending on the terrain. Sterlets with a gray-brown back, a yellowish belly and gray fins are mostly found. There are even albino sterlets with a light golden body, or pure white.
In the people of such unusual fish called “princes” because of the rare catch.
This sturgeon prefers very deep places, bottom sands, tries not to touch anyone, and lead a quiet, moderate life. When evening comes, the fish runs aground, where in coastal minks it searches for insects that can accidentally get into its open mouth.
Fish is of industrial importance, reducing the population was the reason for the inclusion of the species in the International Red Book.

River sterlet occurs in different sizes, body development depends directly on the habitat. The head of a triangular fish, elongated, on it are bone shields. The muzzle is conical, there is a row of fringed antennae below.
The muzzle occupies half of the total head size. Mouth lower, transverse, lower lip interrupted.
Body shape is elongated, spindle-shaped. Gender differences are barely noticeable.
Sterlets can interbreed with other sturgeon: beluga, stellate sturgeon, Siberian sturgeon. The length of wild fish is 120-125 cm, weight – 1-15 kg.
Life expectancy is 25-30 years.
The aquatic sterlet of small size is about 17 cm in length, the color is white-black. In captivity it grows slowly.
For sturgeon it is important to be in clean water, with constant parameters. Therefore, the filtration and aeration system in the aquarium should meet all the requirements for keeping fish. Filter capacity – 6 volumes per hour.
The best option – to build an aquarium with running water, in which there will be no plants. The sturgeon due to the peculiarities of its body (the presence of thorns) is easily entangled in vegetation, which can end in death.
Rough plates of bone tissue retain fish in the plant, due to which the sturgeon cannot swim further. As a result, the aquarium fish begins to fuss, fight, hurting his spine. The best decorations in aquarium for sturgeons are smooth stones.
Grottoes, caves and labyrinths are not recommended. Also, they do not need to install a heating system.
The required water temperature in the aquarium: 15-20 degrees Celsius, acidity – pH 6.5-8.5, water hardness 6-25 dGH.
The sturgeon is a predator, therefore in an aquarium it should be fed with live food, sometimes with fish. Loves insects and mollusks.
They have a small mouth in which there is not a single tooth. Sterlet can be fed with bloodworms, earthworms, tubers, enhitray, beef meat.
The oral apparatus is designed so that the fish feeds from the bottom.

Freshwater sturgeon can be kept together with river fish: shell pike, arvanas, chain catfish, other sturgeon fish. They can not settle with small fish (which will eat) and with very large, which will deprive them of food.
To add neighbors to it, you need an aquarium of at least 500 liters.
Once a week you need to update 20% of the water from the total volume of the tank. The sturgeon lives in exclusively pure water where there are no impurity of ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and heavy organic substances.
When growing up, the sturgeon grows dull, therefore the young aquarium fish should be of a bright color.
