Snail coils in the aquarium benefit or harm

maintenance, care, compatibility

As a rule, this inhabitant of the underwater world comes to us in an aquarium by chance (with water from a pet shop, from purchased plants, etc.). Some lovers consider this snail to be a harmful parasite of an aquarium.

And you can understand them, because the coil snail multiplies in an aquarium with a geometric progression, and ultimately these snails hang in clusters on all the walls of the aquarium.

However, one should not forget that the reel is a useful sanitary order of the aquarium, besides, many fish enjoy eating them. And, to bring them (or control their number) is quite simple.

Description:

Snail reel – representative of freshwater mollusks. In nature, the coil is found everywhere around the globe.

Under natural conditions, snails live in shallow water, in slowly flowing and standing water bodies.

In the aquarium snail coils are found either brown or red. The sink is flat, twisted by a spiral. The little body of the snail has an elongated conical shape, the same color as the shell.

The shell of adult snails reaches – 35 millimeters in diameter and 10 millimeters thick. To move, the snail uses a wide, flat foot, which is clearly visible outside the shell.

On its head there are long horns, long, thin pair of tentacles, as well as eyes.

Snails do not need personal feeding in the general aquarium, as they feed on all sorts of remnants of aquarium life.

These snails are hermaphrodites and probably, therefore, they breed like “rabbits”. Caviar clutch is a flat transparent growth on the inside of a leaf of a plant.

And now the most interesting thing is how to get a snail out of a coil, phys, melania, etc., or to control its numbers?

Having read a bunch of sites on this topic, I was amazed! As a way to get rid of snails coils offered a million options, some even offer output them with current – dropping the wires into the aquarium ))) Hmm … really ….

Here you have a proven and 100% way:

1. Buy a banana on the market.

2. Eat a banana.

3. Leave the banana peel in the sun or battery so that it is completely black.

4. At night, throw a rotten banana peel into an aquarium with snail coils.

5. And in the morning … voila. All coils on a banana peel.

You just have to get and shake the snails from the banana peel in the urn.

P.S. For 2 nights and 2 bananas, I completely saved my aquarium from snails reels.

Well, in general, in pet shops a lot of special preparations are sold for hatching snails, here they are:

Tetra_ZMF_Limnacid

Sera snailpur

Sera snail ex

Sera snail collect

Tropical LIMNA TOX

JBL LimCollect II

Dajana molucid

Air conditioning Aquacons against snails ”

Keep in mind that all these preparations contain copper, which is dangerous not only for snails, but also for fish. Strictly follow the dosage!

And yet the banana peel is not your chemistry (you do not risk disrupting the ecosystem of the aquarium), besides specials. drug costs money.

In confirmation of the above and the effectiveness of getting rid of snails in an aquarium using a banana peel, I post a visual series of photos:

ON THE NEXT MORNING SNAIL ALL ON A BANANA

Video about snail coil

Planorbis snails enter the home water reservoir in different ways, but more often the appearance of the mollusk among aquarian inhabitants is a real surprise for the owner. Now he can only regulate the population of shellfish in the tank and ensure the comfort of their coexistence with its other inhabitants. Snails – unpretentious creatures that do not require special care:

  • being tolerant to a wide range of temperatures, snails are quite satisfied with the temperature regime of water that they create for tropical fish, that is, within 22-28 ° C;
  • there is no need for special feeding of mollusks, since they are content with food debris from other underwater inhabitants, green bloom on the pond glasses, rotten fragments of reservoir plantations (young mollusks, as a rule, keep it on a rotten leaf of a plant).

Unlike other varieties of gastropods, the coil is able to move along the surface of a reservoir with a shell turned upside down.

The possibility of such a method of movement is due to the presence of air in it, let there by the snail itself. An additional support for the mollusk in this case is the film on the surface of the aquarium water, formed by waste products of bacteria or the intrinsic force of the surface tension of the water.

If any danger occurs, releasing air from the shell, the coil quickly sinks to the bottom so as not to be eaten by a predatory fish. This snail action is performed at the reflex level for self-preservation.

The fact is that the clam is a favorite dish for certain species of aquarium fish, which easily break through its saving shell. In some cases, the owners of domestic aquarium tanks with an excessive growth of the mollusk population are specially planted in the reservoir of these types of fighter fish so that they thin out the rows of snails, balancing their number.

❶ Why do we need aquarium snails :: types of aquarium snails melania :: Other pets

Decorative snails are quite common inhabitants of the aquarium. They decorate it well and help to relax after a hard day: their elegant slowness captivates many.

In addition to aesthetics and beauty, these mollusks also have a practical function.

Snails can bring both harm and benefit to the aquarium ecosystem. It all depends on their variety and quantity.

Such mollusks such as ampoule, horn coil, acrolux, melania are very popular with aquarists. If you properly care for the aquarium and control the number of snails, they will bring a lot of benefit. Shellfish are excellent aquarium nurses.

They not only eat up food that fish did not eat, but also their excrement. Thus, these aquatic inhabitants contribute to the purification of water. The remains of feed are a favorable environment for the growth of pathogenic bacteria, which can make turbid of clear water in a matter of hours.

In addition, mollusks eat dead plant parts and clean their bacterial deposits from the walls with their rough tongue. This affects the installation of a favorable microclimate and biological equilibrium in aquarium.

Certain types of mollusks, such as ampulyarias, serve as a kind of indicator of the status of aquarium water. By their behavior, one can determine if there is enough oxygen in the water.

With its shortage, as well as with a sharp change in the pH of the water, the ampoule rises through the glass to the surface of the water and pulls out its siphon tube, the organ that allows it to breathe air. Similarly, the cochlea “signals” to an inexperienced aquarist that it is time to make a water change or purchase a good aerator. One of the disadvantages of ornamental snails is their active reproduction.

A large number of mollusks in aquarium can lead to overcrowding and, as a result, a lack of oxygen to other inhabitants. In addition, a large population of snails can greatly eat the plants.

The best ratio can be considered: one snail per 10 liters of water. Therefore, in a timely manner, scrape their eggs from the glasses, which they lay off with an enviable constancy, to prevent overcrowding of the aquarium. Will they live in your aquarium snails, or not – it’s up to you.

But remember that you can not put mollusks in it from the reservoirs, because with them can get an infection. In addition, some pond snails produce mucus in the water that pollutes it.

Purchase mollusks for your aquarium only in pet stores.

It is recommended to cover the aquarium in which mollusks live. Some species of snails can climb beyond its limits.

The most enduring, unpretentious and prolific species of snails. The inhabitant of most wild reservoirs feels great in the conditions of the aquarium, even regardless of the presence of filtration.

Reaching a shell diameter of 3 cm in nature, it rarely grows more than 1-2 cm in a home aquarium. Being a hermaphrodite, it multiplies at a tremendous speed, which very quickly leads to pollution and overpopulation of the aquarium.

Even one individual is capable of occupying the whole space in a short time.

The coil has a mantle protrusion that performs the function of the gills, but prefers to feed on oxygen from water, depleting its reserves very quickly, which can be a danger to fish.

Therefore, timely reduction of the population and continuous filtration of water in the presence of such snails are simply necessary.

Often the coils are an unwanted guest in the aquarium. Due to the high prevalence, they can get there by chance, in the form of eggs on the leaves of plants, for example.

If you like the coil, and you don’t mind keeping it at home, remove plants as much as possible and reduce the amount of daily feed for your fish – the coil will not multiply so much.

The most interesting representative of snails in aquariums is the snail Helena. Her “trick” is that she is a predator, and her other favorite clams are her favorite delicacy.

That is why aquarists resort to the help of Helen, when their aquariums flood the snails.

Helena is home to Southeast Asia. The snail lives in fresh clean rivers, lakes and ponds with sandy and muddy bottom.

In the aquarium conditions snail perfectly adapts. Helena does not cause much trouble: it is easy to feed and breed.

Like many snails, Helena is unpretentious, and its maintenance does not require large expenditures.

  • Temperature: above 20 degrees. The optimum temperature will be within 21-25 degrees. If the temperature falls below 20, helena will not be able to multiply and will begin to refuse food.
  • Stiffness: Helena will take root in an aquarium with medium water. Soft water will lead to the destruction of the clam shell.
  • Acidity: 7-8 pH
  • The volume of the aquarium. For the full existence of one snail you need about 5 liters. But it is still better to provide the mollusk with more space – about 20 liters.
  • Sand or fine gravel is ideal as a primer. As mentioned above, Helena likes to dig into it. If the ground is large, the snail will be deprived of this pleasure. In addition, soft soil is necessary for the reproduction of the snail.
  • If you have just purchased small Helen, do not plant them in a common aquarium. Give them time to get stronger: the kids will not be able to find enough food. Wait until they grow up to about 1 centimeter.

Helena snails are opposite-sex, therefore their reproduction requires the presence of two individuals. As in the case of ampouleries, it is impossible to distinguish a female from a male, therefore it is better to acquire several pieces at once, so that among them there are likely to be heterosexual.

In good conditions, they breed rather actively: during the year one female can lay about 200 eggs.

Preparing for mating, the snails for some time become inseparable: they crawl together, feed, roll on each other. Having found the established couple of Helen, it is better to deposit them in a separate aquarium.

Neighborhood with active fish depressing effect on the female, and she can not postpone the eggs.

Mating is a rather long process, it can take several hours. After that, the female lays an egg on a hard surface: stones, snags or other decorations of the aquarium. It is a transparent cushion with a yellow egg hidden inside it.

Caviar ripens within 2-4 weeks.

When a small snail hatch, it immediately finds itself at the bottom, after which it hides in the ground. There it remains a few months, until it reaches the size of 5-8 millimeters.

Helena is the perfect helper in an aquarium who can slow down the stormy color of mollusks eating everything around. Its content is not at all troublesome, and numerous reviews prove that a small predator will not only benefit, but also become a wonderful element of the decor of the aquarium.

The red coil in the aquarium is a snail that everyone knows

It is known that coils can be carriers of parasites during life, which infect and even kill fish. But it is in nature, and in an aquarium the chance with snails to transfer parasites is much lower than with food.

Even in frozen food, not to mention live food, various parasites and pathogens can survive.

So I wouldn’t worry about that. If it is very important for you to get snails, but you are afraid to bring parasites, then you can bring in the aquarium caviar coils, which is not a carrier.

The coils are hermaphroditic, which means that they also have sexual characteristics of both sexes, but they need a pair for reproduction. In order for the coils in your tank to become a lot, just two snails. It is clear that the more of them initially, the faster they multiply.

You just do not need to do anything for this, run it and forget it. They will do everything themselves. Especially quickly the coils flood the aquarium if you overfeed the fish.

Feed residues are an excellent nutritional base on which they grow and develop.

But even if you only got one snail, the chances that it will soon be divorced are very high. Do not forget, they are hermaphrodite and can fertilize themselves. Or it can already be fertilized and soon lay eggs.

Caviar looks like a transparent drop inside which dots are visible. Caviar of coils can be anywhere, on stones, on the filter, on the walls of the aquarium, even on the shell of other snails. It is covered with a gelatinous composition to protect small snails.

Caviar coils peck for 14–30 days depending on water temperature and conditions in the aquarium.
Coils live from one to two years, rarely more. It is often difficult to understand – the coil is already dead or just resting.

In that case, you need to … smell it. The deceased quickly comes decomposition and strong smell.

No matter how strange it may sound, however, it is important to control the death of snails, especially in small aquariums. The fact is that they can thoroughly spoil the water, as they quickly begin to decompose.

They prefer warm water, 22-28 C. Coils eat almost everything – vegetables, rotting plants, fodder for fish, dead fish. You can feed vegetables – lettuce, cucumbers, zucchini, cabbage.

All this must be boiled for a minute in boiling water and give small pieces.

There is nothing difficult in keeping the coils in the aquarium. Simply start them, they will find food themselves. By the way, very often the snails get into the aquarium together with the plants or the decor on which they lay eggs.

So if suddenly you have snails – do not be surprised, it is natural.
