Small aquarium turtles

maintenance, care, compatibility

Many aquarists want little turtles to live in their underwater kingdom. To do this, you need to have sufficient knowledge about these reptiles, as well as how to equip an aquarium and take care of amazing creatures.

All the details you can find out by reading this article.

If you want to have a turtle, then consider, first of all, the following: turtles walk along the bottom of the aquarium, but they cannot breathe under water. Therefore, periodically, any aquatic bug pops up for breath.

That is why it is important that the water level was not too high. Otherwise, such an inexperienced content of turtles will lead to their death.

Now let’s talk about other nuances that also need attention. So, when choosing a soil for turtles should stay on the river sand with fine gravel.

However, many species of aquarium turtles can do without soil.

You will also need to add a few plants to the aquarium. First, they are eaten by turtles, and secondly, it will decorate the habitat.

To equip the correct aquarium for turtles, you need:

  1. provide a large enough area of the bottom. In this case, you should not dwell on the altitude. Almost all species of turtles can live in aquariums with a height of up to 20 cm;
  2. to equip a small island. Although small aquarium turtles are constantly in the water, they sometimes tend to appear on the shore – in order to lay eggs. And for this they just need an island. Even if you do not intend to breed turtles, make sure such an island. Also install a lamp above it, then the turtles will have the opportunity to bask in the improvised “sun”. This is very important, since aquatic turtles are cold-blooded; therefore, the degree of mobility depends on their body temperature.

Being in their natural habitat, very many species of turtles eat various plants, fish, mollusks. Aquarium turtles are quite difficult to feed year-round exclusively with live food. What, then, feed these turtles?

You can give them a mixture, which consists of crushed shellfish, shrimp and fish. Periodically (but not too often) turtles can be fed with small pieces of beef.

True, in the summer it is advisable to provide the reptiles with live food. The best option will be snails: all turtles enjoy eating them.

But why feed the turtles with live food? It’s all about the nature of these interesting reptiles. They spend almost all their free time hunting and hunting food.

Consequently, live food will satisfy the needs of turtles in the hunt. If they no one will catch, then out of boredom, they can almost stop moving.

In addition, live food in sufficient quantities contains phosphorus and calcium, and these elements are extremely important for the shell of turtles.

You can still fill the ground with coral sand, as its sand turtles are also often eaten. Finally, for the strength of the shell, you can also feed the turtles with eggshells.

In addition to live food, turtles have a need for plant food: these are necessary conditions for the constant replenishment of vitamin reserves. What kind of vegetable feed?

You can give the reptiles cabbage, lettuce, and other greens.

If turtles are properly maintained, they will need to be fed only once a day (except for certain species). Just keep in mind that they can eat for several hours.

These are the features of aquarium turtles. They are very funny, their content will always be interesting.

It is only necessary to look after them very well.

Red-eared aquarium turtle: features and conditions of detention

The most frequent among our compatriots in aquariums for turtles can be found marsh, snake, and red-eared turtle. These kinds of species are common among fans of these animals. Aquariums for the red-eared turtle are especially popular in pet stores.

This aquarium turtle is popular for its simple care and its bright color. These animals grow quite quickly.

It takes only five years for the shell of a small turtle to reach 30 centimeters in diameter.

How many red-eared turtles live in an aquarium? At home, they live long enough – at least 30 years.

However, for this they need the right care. The males have a long tail, wide at the base, but the females cannot boast such an impressive tail part.

Just look at the photo to determine another characteristic feature of the males – long claws on the front paws.

Popular are turtles, whose size is less than ten centimeters. But before you start them, you need to learn how to properly care for such small turtles.

Keeping small turtles: what is worth paying attention to?

For small turtles fit a small aquarium, the water level in which should be up to twenty centimeters. It is necessary to remember one thing about such turtles: they love to be at the bottom of the aquarium and walk around it, but they do not have gills for a long stay under water, so it is vital for them to occasionally float to the surface.

Turtles do this to get the right dose of oxygen. On this basis, it follows that the water level in the aquarium cannot be very high, otherwise the turtles will not have time to rise to the surface for the next sip of oxygen and will die.

The area of the bottom of the aquarium is important – the more the better. It is very good if there is both an island of land and a water part in the aquarium;

What do little turtles eat? Natural food for them – plants, fish and shellfish. You can also use a mixture of fish, shrimp and clams.

Another option for turtle feed is beef slices. Sometimes you can pamper pets with lettuce leaves and other greenery, because vegetable food is also very important for them.

The following species of small turtles are distinguished: red-eared, marsh, long-hair and silt turtles. The most unpretentious in the content – silt.

Small aquarium turtles do not require special care, so they are ideal as pets for people who have little free time, but who want to have a living creature at home.

This small green-brown bug with red cheeks, brought to us from America – the most frequent guest of aquariums.

Her unpretentious, bright appearance, omnivorous, semi-aquatic lifestyle attract many aquarists. The length of the carapace in females reaches 30 cm, the males are almost half less (up to 15 cm), but have a thicker tail, powerful claws.

Eating such a bug does not present difficulties. In captivity, it can be fed with fish, finely chopped raw meat, worms, mice, small frogs, snails, as well as plant foods (vegetables, apples, bananas, algae).

All products must be given exclusively raw. To diversify the diet, you can use special dry feed for turtles.

Like all aquarium turtles, the red-eared need a sufficiently large living space (the volume of the aquarium is at least 200 liters) and a temperature of 26-30 ° C (the water is slightly cooler, the island is heated to 30-32 ° C).

Beautiful and non-aggressive, which makes her an ideal pet even for families with children.

Turtles are popular species of reptiles that are often found in domestic aquariums. To buy an animal, it is enough to go to a pet store, and select the one you like.

Before this is done, experienced specialists recommend creating all the necessary living conditions for the pet so that it will not suffer from stress, wounds, infections and other injuries.

If turtles live in your home for years, then it is advisable to quarantine for a period of 2-3 months. It is not recommended to settle adults and newborns together, as they injure each other.

Animals of similar sizes can coexist, accustomed to the same conditions.

Having appeared in the new environment, the young turtle will adapt in it several days, differing at the same time with modest behavior. Although some may show aggression, excessive activity.

Do not forget to feed and monitor the general condition of the pet.

The red-necked turtle spends most of its life (25-30 years) in the aquatic environment. Heat-loving, capricious representative of tropical reservoirs, so with their own hands will have to issue a quality aquarium that will serve her for many years. The maintenance of a turtle involves the installation of an aquarium (aquaterrarium) with a volume of 150 liters per adult.

In the tank, the water should be 40 cm deep, but proportional to the size of the pet – small turtles swim poorly, water can be less. It is important that it is freely located in water, and the liquid completely covers the shell.

On the aquarium there should be a cover with holes for the access of air, so that after the water swimming the reptile will go to the land to take a sip of air and warm up.

In the aquatic environment, you need to monitor the parameters of water: the water temperature is 22-28 degrees – at low temperature, the turtle will become slow-moving, lethargic, give up feed and can get sick. River representatives of this species fall asleep in the water for the winter, but it is not necessary to force the pet into a state of hibernation. The acidity and hardness of water are recommended medium, the animal can live in infused water from the tap.

For settlement of several turtles a spacious aquarium is required, not less than 200 liters, with a water surface and a coastal embankment.

Watch a video about the content of red-eared turtles.

Maintain cleanliness in the aquarium for the red-eared turtle can be either with your own hands, or with the help of an internal filter, which is often used in aquariums with fish. It is recommended to update the water 1-2 times a week, depending on the degree of water pollution.

Turtles eat under water, so cloudiness, the formation of foam and silt are possible. Harmful organic compounds are harmful to their health. With the accumulation of nitrates and ammonia in the water, it begins to produce an unpleasant odor.

New water should be the same parameters as the previous one, but in no case fresh from the tap (only infused). To illuminate the pond, you can put an ultraviolet lamp.

The longha turtle prefers not only swimming, but also swimming in the sun. Be sure to build a shore, land – with your own hands make a small ledge of pebbles (but not shallow), attaching stones to each other using aquarium sealant. Do not install wood planks – they quickly get wet, grow moldy, parasites infest.

Place a lamp above the land – due to the heat on the tortoise’s body, the parasites “die out”, it is heated. Water is heated with a special heating device (some distributors use a tube with an integrated thermostat).

What else can you install in the aquarium with your own hands

Red-skinned turtles cannot be kept with aquarium fish, as they will be eaten. Sometimes aquarists make compromises by shielding an aquarium using vertical glass with water holes.

Large gaps should be absent so that turtles do not crawl into another part of the reservoir. It turns out, ½ part of the nursery in the possession of reptiles, and the second – “fish”.

Just in her own hands, you can land plants for fish, special soil and scenery.

Growth in turtles is fast, in the first year of life they reach sizes of 22-25 cm, so take care of a large capacity for living in advance. In the interior of the “house” there should be safe decorations: pebbles of medium size (so that the animal does not swallow it), gravel is not safe to place.

In the pond should be installed pre-treated snags, houses, grottoes, caves. Plants to plant undesirable – turtles are not averse to eat, although some species are suitable for food.

Look at your own handmade aquarium for eared turtles.

When choosing the size and type of aquarium it is necessary to take into account the dimensions of an adult animal and the characteristics of its body. Red-skinned turtles spend a lot of time under water or at the bottom of an artificial reservoir where they feel safe.

The volume of the aquarium is selected depending on the size and number of turtles. For one turtle 13 cm long or a pair of young individuals 10 cm long each, a one-hundred-meter aquarium will be enough.

As it grows, the capacity is replaced by a larger one. So, for a pair of turtles 20-30 cm long, a two hundred-liter aquarium is already required. If the volume is too small, the water is polluted faster, which leads to the disease of the red-haired women.

The distance from the water level to the upper edge of the aquarium should be at least 15-20 cm.

Pontoon turtle – swimming reptile. In addition to water, it is vital to the land on which it is heated and gets an ultraviolet tan. The recommended size of the land area is at least 25% of the total area of the aquarium.

The island is preferably firmly attached to the base of the tank.

The tank should be equipped with a lid, so that the pets could not move it and get out, but at the same time it is well breathable.

The basic principle of the choice of scenery is safety. Do not use objects from environmentally hazardous materials with sharp corners or edges.

Ground for the bottom should not be very small, as turtles can sometimes swallow it. Also, the shallow soil is quickly polluted and poorly cleaned.

It is better to use a pebble fraction of 5-6 cm.

For young turtles you can plant green plants and run the fish. Adults do not need soil, and they can eat or damage plants and fish.

In an aquarium with red-eared turtles artificial plastic or silk plants will be appropriate. In the ground they are fixed with the help of goods.

Artificial lianas can also be installed on the islands.

To decorate the terrarium, you can use a variety of snags, grottoes, unusual stones and other elements. Snags should not be fresh, as they will release harmful substances into the water. It is better to take pieces of wood that have lain for a long time in the water of any reservoir.

The bark of them must be removed.

There are aquariums in which red-eared turtles cannot be categorically maintained:

  1. Little turtles up to 50-70 liters. They can only be used for temporary housing. If a turtle lives in such a capacity for a long time, then it develops skin infectious diseases, dystrophy and softening of the shell.
  2. Aquariums in which the land is made of plastic.
  3. Aquariums in which it is impossible to set the desired temperature, as well as ultraviolet and filtration. The absence of all these conditions leads to disease and death of turtles.

Thus, the care of the red-eared turtle, as well as any other pet, requires some effort. But a terrarium in which the water is clean, the bottom is picturesque, and the animals are healthy – this is a fascinating sight that is worth the time and effort.
