Good afternoon, dear colleagues. Recently, the issues of algae control have been discussed more and more actively in aquarium forums.
To keep up with the trend, I decided to prepare an article for you on this topic. All of you have probably heard of a chemically drug called Sydex, but few people know how to use it in your aquarium.
That’s what we will talk about today.
To begin with, let’s determine the reasons why algae appear in our aquariums. In general, algal outbreaks are caused by an imbalance in the aquarium.
This phenomenon is characteristic of both novice aquarists and more experienced comrades. To get rid of certain algae, as a rule, the aquarist has to use a set of specific measures that lead to a specific result.
But there are cases when the struggle by regular cleaning and cleaning the aquarium does not bring its fruits and you have to decide something.
Reviews of aquarists on the means of anti-algae
To date, on sale there is a fairly large amount of anti-algae. Now they are generally referred to as “Sidex”, as their products are produced by both domestic manufacturers and foreign companies producing aquarium products (for example, the German company Tetra). According to many aquarists, AQUAYER Algicide + CO2 is the same as Saydeks.
Only the manufacturer emphasizes that their tool is more concentrated and has some other useful properties for the aquarium.
Unfortunately, it is an extremely difficult task to buy real Sidex in Ukraine, since the real original product can only be purchased from suppliers of medical equipment. The aquarist will have to spend a lot of hours until he finds a person in the aquarium forum who could send him a certain amount of money.
And who gives a guarantee that it will be original. It is easier and cheaper to buy a sidex for the aquarium in the form of a concentrate and to prepare a single-component aqueous 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution
In general, a set of rules that will help you protect your aquarium from algae is fairly simple and intuitive:
- After the purchase of new plants to conduct quarantine measures;
- Constantly increase the number of plants;
- Regularly change the water in the aquarium;
- Install a quality biofilter;
- Provide proper and balanced lighting in the tank with an appropriate emission spectrum;
- Feed your plants regularly with mineral fertilizers and carbon dioxide;
- Regulate the amount of feed you give the fish.
Of course, the above rules are not a 100% panacea for algae. In some situations, the aquarist is forced to disassemble the filter, do costly water tests and look for the cause of disharmony in the nutrition of aquatic plants. If there is a possibility and the type of algae allows, you can also physically remove unwanted guests from the aquarium.
But if this does not help, then it is time to turn for help to chemical preparations, in particular, to Sidex.
This drug is a two-component system, which includes powdered activator and glutaraldehyde, which as a result of mixing form the desired solution with the corresponding percentage of the active substance. But, since the aquarist does not need an activator, it is thrown away because of its uselessness. Initially, the drug was created by Johnson Johnson for disinfecting instruments in medical facilities.
Just over time, aquarists have adapted to use the drug for their professional needs. In general, saydex for the aquarium and its inhabitants is extremely harmful, but if the established proportions are observed, the aquarium animals and aquatic plants will not be affected, only the lower algae.
Let’s say your aquarium overcame Blackbeard. How to deal with it, I already wrote in this article, you can find.
But, if the described methods did not bring the coveted result, it is time to use Сidex.
If you plan to get rid of algae in a safe way, then add 10 ml of Sidex daily to 100 liters of water in the aquarium. After a week you can see the first results of the work. If this dosage does not bring any fruit, the dosage should be increased to 15 ml per 100 liters of water.
This dosage should be enough to destroy any algae in your tank, including the black beard. If you comply with the above dosage, you will not harm anyone of the aquarium inhabitants: fry, adult fish, invertebrates and plants will be healthy.
But there are cases when it is necessary to increase the dosage to 20 ml for every 100 liters of water. In this case, the result will already be noticeable after a couple of days.
As I mentioned above, the dosage of the drug may be different, but within reason. If your task is not to kill algae, but to supply plants with carbon dioxide, then it will be quite enough to make every day 3 to 5 ml of glutaraldehyde for every 100 liters of water.
In some cases, even this dosage is sufficient to destroy some species of simple algae in an aquarium.
For aquariums that contain live aquatic plants, aquarium fish and invertebrates, the maximum allowable concentration of Sidex is 20 ml for every 100 liters of water. With the introduction of large dosages increases the chance to poison all the inhabitants of the underwater garden. There are some types of aquarium fish that easily transfer concentrations up to 25 ml per 100 liters of water.
If there is no living creature in aquatic, then the maximum allowable dosage is 40 ml of the drug for every 100 liters of water. But in this case, you can destroy the colonies of beneficial bacteria.
To begin with, I would like to note that special preparations based on glutaraldehyde, affect the aquarium ecosystem in different ways. The essence of Cidex’s work is that it acts at the cellular level on algae tissue.
Accordingly, this chemical preparation can be successfully used as the removal of various green patches on the walls and decorations of the aquarium, and to destroy the dense dark carpet of the “black beard” and xenococcus.
Depending on the dosage used and the type of saidex, the complete destruction of algae can take up to two weeks.
As a result of numerous experiments, it was found that Cidex does not have a harmful effect on the aquarium biosystem, and if it does, the most mediated:
- The chemical parameters of water can be slightly affected by dead algae after an aquarium has been treated with a sidedex;
- The concentration of carbon dioxide increases slightly, which causes an increase in the growth of higher plants;
- The first few days after using the drug aquarists noted a slight increase in the concentration of nitrates and nitrites;
- But, nevertheless, the established changes were so insignificant that the biological equilibrium in the aquarium was not disturbed and quickly restored.
Diseases of fish and C> Any aquarist would agree with me that if the fish started to get sick en masse in the aquarium, then you need to start worrying a lot. And this applies not only to beginners, experienced aquarists who have eaten a dog with this hobby are also nervous, because a neglected disease can mow down all aquarium animals.
In fact, all diseases that were detected in the early stages are treatable.
In nature, there is a special science ichthypathology, which studies the diseases of fish. All existing sores are divided into two categories: non-infectious and invasive (caused by harmful bacteria and viruses).
Some types of fungal diseases can also be attributed to invasive diseases. Infectious diseases, in fact, are a consequence of the effects on the body of aquarium fish viruses and various harmful microorganisms (worms, intestinal cavities and ciliates).
Small crustaceans can also lead a parasitic lifestyle on the body of fish. Non-contagious diseases are usually caused by improper maintenance of aquarium fish (this may be an inappropriate environment or improper feeding).
Such diseases include the following common illnesses: Branchomycosis, aeromonosis, arguments and botrycephalosis.
The best proven remedy for outbreaks of any disease is the old proven prevention. If you keep the balance in the aquarium and organize a balanced and properly catering for your pets, then you can protect the aquarium animal from the mass of sores. And if all the trouble has come, you will be able to determine it in time and cure it at an early stage.
The main thing is to make an accurate diagnosis, and it will be much easier to treat.
An excellent tool for preventive measures in the aquarium is Saydeks. And do not think that the drug is used only for the destruction of algae. Look at the beginning of the material, Cidex is a disinfectant.
Accordingly, it can also fight against various harmful microorganisms.
If you compare Saydeks with other aquarium algaecides, then it is the safest for aquatic inhabitants and the ecosystem as a whole. If you do not exceed the allowable dosage, its use will have a positive impact on the health of the fish.
The essence of the work with regards to diseases of aquarium fish is that Sidex kills all microorganisms that undermine the immunity in fish and provoke the development of diseases in them.
