Running the aquarium for the first time from scratch – a guide for beginners

Starting an aquarium is a rather complicated process and careful preparation is required to complete it. Before you populate the fish, you will need to purchase the artificial reservoir itself, decorative elements, vegetation, the necessary equipment (filter, aerator), light. To properly launch a new aquarium, it is not enough to install everything that was purchased, pour water and populate animals, a certain biological environment (microflora) must be established in the pond.

To make everything clear, you need to consider a phased process of preparing the reservoir for settlement, which is especially important for beginners.

You have an aquarium of the required volume, you already know who you want to settle there. And where did he find a place in your house?

You do not need to constantly rearrange it from place to place, you need to choose some one. It should not be a window sill or a place where there can be a draft or direct sunlight.

Also take care that the place is not noisy and there is no room battery nearby.

The surface of the selected site must be clean and level, able to withstand high pressure on it. The edges of the aquarium should not protrude. If the surface is unable to withstand the weight, the bottom may crack.

For a more uniform discharge, you can look at yourself with soft underlays or mats.

It is desirable that there is a power outlet nearby, since the necessary equipment for maintaining life inside will be connected to it.

After choosing a place you need to prepare for the launch of the aquarium itself. It must be washed without the use of chemicals (without soap or detergent), you can do it with baking soda or salt.

Wash the walls with water 4 times. And also, as an option, it is recommended to fill it with water so that traces of sealant and other hazards are gone. At the same time, you can check if it is not flowing anywhere.

Some leave it flooded for several days, in order to remove toxic substances from them, and then rid it of water.

As a rule, the soil is represented by gravel of the fine fraction, which is suitable for most plants. Before you put it in the aquarium, it is better to conduct a heat treatment, for example, boiling.

After that, most of the soil is mixed with the starting fertilizer.

The base is laid out neatly on the bottom in an even layer, the height of which should not be less than 4 cm. In some cases it is advisable to arrange an uneven layer: small at the front glass, gradually rising to the rear wall.

It is better to immediately plan the places where the plants will be located. At this stage, it is important to do everything correctly to avoid further refinements.

When choosing a place where plantings will be located, it is better to focus on lighting and remoteness from heating appliances. Artificial and natural decorations are placed on the ground.

Aquarium decoration is, without a doubt, a very important event for lovers of breeding ornamental fish. Such an activity can really captivate a person, and if you involve a child in the process, it can also become an excellent element of aesthetic education. Beautifully and competently equipped aquarium will decorate the interior of the room.

And how nice to watch the fish, which is comfortable in a harmoniously organized microcosm!

Design can not be imagined without such important elements as:

  • pebbles;
  • ground;
  • decorative items;
  • vegetation.

Also a special place in the above list is, of course, aquarium fish. So, it is very important before their acquisition to determine their internal preferences about their appearance and character.

And based on this, make their purchase.

Remember that each fish is an individuality, therefore, it is necessary to take this into account when forming the design of an artificial reservoir. So, as a negative example, we can cite one case where inexperienced aquarists acquired African cichlids living in reservoirs with rocky shores and running into an artificial reservoir with a huge amount of vegetation, which is totally unacceptable for representatives of this species.

Such a dramatic change in natural conditions can cause not only serious stress in the fish, but also lead to more serious consequences.

Attention: water should be poured very carefully in order to avoid excessive turbidity.

How to do it right? Take a bucket of water and a piece of ordinary garden hose. Now lower one end of the hose into the bucket and the other end into the aquarium, to the very bottom.

The bucket should be placed above the level of the aquarium (take the stepladder and put the bucket on the uppermost platform).

Then – pure physics (the law of communicating vessels): take the end of the hose, which is lowered into the aquarium, into your mouth, make a suction effort – and the water will flow from the bucket to the aquarium. Now direct a stream of water on the glass and you will avoid turbidity.

There is another way: when pouring water (without a hose and a bucket), you should put a plate at the bottom of the tank and direct the flow of water into it: the water from the plate will evenly and without splashing fill the tank. Leave water for 5-7 days.

Many beginners try to make a quick start and immediately start up the fish immediately after pouring the water, but at this stage it will be a certain death for them.

After 5–7 days we can plant the plants. But in order to establish a good microclimate, it is recommended to plant simple aquarium plants first: hornpole, nyas, valisneria, anubias, elodea, indian fern, richchia, hygrophil, ambulia.

Any of these plants will perfectly cope with the formation of the biological environment.

Lighting try to set about 0.35 watts / l. Turn on the light for 8 hours every day.

Newly acquired fish should be temporarily placed in a quarantine aquarium and only later in the main one, in order to avoid introducing any diseases and to acclimatize. It is worth remembering that the differences in the parameters of the water in the aquarium, and the water in which the fish is transported, can be significant, so if it is immediately placed in the aquarium, it will be subjected to the strongest shock and may even die. We are talking about such parameters as the chemical composition of water, its temperature.

Especially dangerous is a sharp change in pH (pH-shock), an increase in nitrate (nitrate shock) and a change in temperature (temperature shock).

A little bit about settling fish. When you bring in new fish, pour some of the water out of the fish tank and fill this part with water from the aquarium. Leave the fish for an hour.

If the fish are in the package, then you can put it in the general aquarium to establish the same temperature. Within a few hours, gradually replace all the water, then send the fish to the general aquarium.

On the first day, it is advisable not to feed them, since they are under a certain stress, do not be afraid, nothing will happen to them during the day and they will withstand a small hunger strike.

Remember, do not think that you can run the fish earlier, follow the instructions provided, if you do not want to subsequently restart the launch of the aquarium.

Fish that have just been let into an aquarium can hide or remain at the bottom. At first, they will be completely disoriented, so it is best to leave them alone and in no case try to lure them from their shelters. For the next day, aquarium lighting should not be included.

Let the fish swim in the twilight, in daylight or room light. Feed in the first day also should not be.

After the aquarium has been launched, the aquarist can breathe out a little and enjoy the first results of his work. However, you should not relax, because the most interesting things start ahead!

The aquarium is interesting because it is not a static picture with fish in the pond. Our site always encourages people to change their attitude to this amazing hobby and look at it in a new way.

Aquaria is so surprising that it is atypical, there are no stereotypes, taboos, clear prescriptions. Each individual aquarium is unique!

In aquaristics, perhaps, there is only one rule – you need to learn how to see and feel your aquarium. No need to perceive the aquarium problems and failures, as a tragedy. As Shakespeare said: “The bad, the good are not there, there is only how we call it!”

It is necessary to perceive everything with curiosity, study materials, study your aquarium world and, of course, first of all treat everything with love.
