The compressor should be in every aquarium – this is a guarantee of water saturation with enough oxygen so that the fish and underwater plants feel good. However, many models of compressors are noisy at work, which at night simply makes it unbearable to sleep.
Of course, progress does not stand still, and manufacturers have already begun to produce more comfortable devices. So, choose a quiet silent compressor for your aquarium.
All modern compressors for aquariums are divided into two types (by design):
Piston work with the help of a piston, under the influence of which the generated air flow comes out. Such models usually have high power, suitable for large aquariums.
Serve a very long time.
Membrane aquarium compressors generate air using special membranes. They consume little electricity, however, and the power of their work will not allow to enrich a large tank with oxygen over 150 liters.
A common feature of both types of aerators is a high level of noise produced during operation. However, the technologies themselves make it possible to create new developments, where the noise will be much lower, or it will not exist at all.
Today, almost all manufacturers have in their assortment membrane compressors for aquariums, the volume of which depends on the electric drive and the degree of vibration of the membranes. It is worth remembering that the concept of “noise” is individual, for each person this threshold is different.
Therefore, measurements of acceptable noise levels are often made using a special application “Sound Meter HQ” for smartphones and tablets. Why is it?
Because it has the ability to measure low-noise sound less than 10 decibels, while professional sound level meters usually have a minimum noise threshold. An application can even recognize a person’s breathing.
It is easy to choose a quiet and silent compressor for your aquarium from the options listed below.
In all tests, the aPUMP compressor from Collar is leading.
If you read the forums aquarium, you can be sure – the professionals argue that his work is almost not audible. The manufacturer claims a noise level of 35 dB, but in fact the result was much better – only 7 decibels. (Recall that the allowed noise level for standards in a room designed for sound recording, equipped with insulation, is 2 dB).
Collar aPUMP is effective in aquariums of less than two hundred liters; at the moment it is the most compact and quietly working aerator in the world. It is efficient in high aquariums up to 80 centimeters in depth due to the powerful air flow.
With a water height of 50 cm, it produces a noise of no more than 10 decibels.
EHEIM (Germany) calls the aerators produced by it the quietest, and indeed, they also show excellent results. Particular attention was paid to the manufacturer on the mechanism that causes the movement of air masses: the membrane is made of a special type of rubber with integrated magnets, so that the anchor is no longer needed, and therefore – less noise.
The hull construction has undergone a similar change – modern noise reduction technologies have been fully applied to it. In addition, the compressor is hung vertically, so that the vibration does not go to the table or other resonating objects.
The kit comes with a diffuser, with which you can easily adjust the activity and size of the bubbles. According to the measurements, the device produces a noise of 18-21 dB (the variation depends on the power of the aerator).
The company JBL has a whole “quiet” line, which is called JBL ProSilent. Despite the virtually silent operation, their compressors fully provide aeration of aquariums of various volumes (from 40 to 600 l).
The noise level demonstrated during the measurements was 20 dB (if you choose the smallest model) and 30 dB (for the most overall). The manufacturer also warns that over time, the sound level may increase – the dust affects the air guide gasket and contamination by lime spray of the sprayer.
However, these parts can always be replaced.
Sicce aerators show the same level of noise as the previous version. The compressor legs have a special design that almost completely smooths the vibrations.
To do this, the device should be strictly horizontally and on a hard surface. Or you can hang it vertically to reduce noise even more.
Another well-known German company produces compressors with a slightly higher noise generation. The engineers, developing the design, took into account all the drawbacks of their previous models, as a result of which the new devices are equipped with special noise-insulating housings made of dense material, and the membranes are made of high elasticity rubber.
The most compact aerator from the silent line is suitable for work in small aquariums (10-60 l). At the same time, it emits a noise of approximately 26 dB. If you choose a compressor for a large tank (up to 600 liters), then stop the choice on the model Tetra APS-400.
Its noise is 37 dB, which can be compared with a slight rustle of paper in a spacious audience.
Tetra, according to reviews of professional aquarists, always overheated in the process. This moment is also taken into account.
In new models, this minus is missing. You can also note the stylish modern design, which plays a significant role in the popularity of the company.
Aquael manufactures several product lines, among which OXYPRO and OXYBOOST are quite popular. The Aquael devices were always in demand because of the high power, however this plus was associated with a lot of noise.
In innovative models, elastic sound-absorbing materials, double walls of the case and an unusual device of a magnet are used. Therefore, to date, Aquael compressors are a harmonious combination of power and quiet operation.
For example, the OXYPRO 150 aerator shows a noise level of 35 dB and is able to work with a depth of up to 200 cm. And if you have a smaller aquarium (most likely, it is), then you do not need to turn the device into full power.
Accordingly, the noise will be even lower.
Schego is also a company based in Germany. Moreover, it has been on the market for 60 years.
Compressors manufactured by Schego have a minimalist appearance – a transparent case with even shapes through which you can see the entire internal structure of the unit.
Tests also show good results. The compressors are very powerful, designed for large tanks of 100-300 liters, but they are even quieter than the Tetra mentioned above.
It’s all about the special material of the legs, which, despite their small size, effectively smooths the vibration.
The most modest Schego aerator, called PRIMA 100+, shows 30 decibels for a 100-liter aquarium. The most powerful (model M2K3) shows 35-40 dB, it is also quite acceptable.
Similar noise is given by devices from the Aquamedic brand – specifically, the Mistral 200 and Mistral 300 models. The case is made of solid aluminum and is very massive; The legs are equipped with an effective rubber efficient vibration damping.
The Mistral 300 (more powerful) has 38 dB noise.
The company produces a very large spread of different aerators, quiet and not very. In particular, the Fluval Q2 model differs in low noise, which is capable of working with tanks of 40-600 l. The smallest models in size and power emit about 35 dB of noise; the most massive – no more than 45.
The secret lies in the double walls and multi-chamber. Between the chambers are special partitions.
Thanks to this design, extremely quiet operation combined with continuous and strong airflow is ensured.
The Chinese compressor positions itself as noiseless, but the test results show a completely different result. Even if the aerator was relatively quiet when buying at the store, after only a couple of months the volume is 45 dB, plus there is a strong case heat.
In addition, the warranty on most models is only six months.
Chinese Resun has a low price, which is why they attract customers, especially for beginners. But the controversial question is whether to save in this case.
How to reduce noise if the compressor is already old?
Even if the new aerator has pleased you with a low noise level, after a while the device will definitely become louder. Some models even make a buzz.
In living rooms it is at least uncomfortable, however, putting a less powerful device will not work if the aquarium is very large. Fortunately, there are a couple of ways to reduce noise.
First, determine the specific source of noise. If it is friction against glass or other objects, then it will be sufficient to place a regular sponge for washing dishes (only a new one) under the device.
The sponge effectively absorbs buzz and other noises. Sometimes for compressors they build self-made cases of foam rubber, plastic, wood, providing partial noise insulation.
If even after that the noise remains strong, then you can try to carefully open the device. The main thing is not to damage anything.
Often, the sound comes from the air-pressure membrane septum. In this case, accurate trimming of extra membrane sections that create noise will help.
Also, increased noise is observed in case of severe contamination of the internal parts of the device. In order for the compressor to last longer, it is often necessary to clean the aquarium (at least once a month).
If the noise comes from loose parts, then you should fasten them more tightly.
