The flora and fauna of aquariums is not an inert mass that never interacts with the environment. It is a constantly changing system, exchanging substances between all its participants.

Among them may be completely not harmless organisms such as bacteria or various viruses, which often become the causes of serious diseases in fish.

And if for an ordinary home aquarist the loss of a few small pets is not a major tragedy, large specialized farms that grow certain species may lose the fruits of years of work due to a sudden epidemic.

Therefore, for the safety of the whole brood and used UV sterilizers for the aquarium. The radiation emitted by them is fatal to most harmful organisms that can penetrate into the reservoir.

UV lamp helps prevent the occurrence of diseases in fish

Ultraviolet is the shortest wavelength of electromagnetic radiation, which is outside the spectrum visible to human organs of vision. In total there are several varieties that differ in the length of the emitted wave and, accordingly, in their penetrating and physical properties:

  • A – the longest area, includes a range from 320 to 400 nanometers. Longer – only visible purple light. It is this species that reaches the surface of the Earth after being filtered by the atmosphere.
  • B — average over the general range (290–320 nm), more aggressive. Some of these rays also penetrate the dense ozone layer of the atmosphere and are well tolerated by living organisms.
  • C – the shortest wavelength spectrum, possible in principle, the range – from 180 to 290 nanometers. They have no chance to get to the surface, they are deadly for most living beings.

Any rays can be used as disinfectants, since bacteria and viruses, because of their structure, do not have a natural barrier that would protect them.

These devices differ by several criteria. In addition to the power of the radiator, they may have different design features.

For example, a way to interact with water or a type of attachment to a tank. Basically, the type of location of UV-sterilizers for the aquarium is divided into the following types:

  1. Built-in – have a lamp of low power, and therefore the least effective in fighting outbreaks of epidemics of harmful microorganisms. With overgrowing and greening of water in the aquarium will not help – the rays simply do not break through the thickness of absolutely opaque water.
  2. Internal – are mainly part of the filter, which is installed inside the aquarium to clean water from harmful salts and waste products of wildlife. Only the volume that is pumped through the flask is disinfected, therefore, they have the same low productivity. However, it is quite suitable for the prevention of diseases in animals.

Internal sterilizers are equipped with low power lamps

  • External – the most common and effective, are installed immediately after the pumping pump and much faster to cope with their task. Today – almost no alternative source of ultraviolet for the aquarium.
  • At the heart of the design of each of these sterilizers is a quartz lamp, which is capable of heating up to the desired temperature. It is thanks to this that it is possible to translate the light emitted by it into the desired spectrum and make it the rays of the required length.

    As a rule, each lamp is responsible for its own range, and no adjustment for the embedded crystal is provided.

    In order not to waste time on the choice, it is better to first determine the final parameters of the desired device. The most important in this choice will be the ratio of the power of the sterilizer, expressed in watts and the volume of the vessel that will be disinfected. The optimal ratio will be 1 watt per 40−46 liters of aquarium volume.

    It should be understood that the dependence has a decaying principle – the higher the capacity, the lower the emitter power is required.

    The main parameter when choosing a UV is its power

    The remaining characteristics are as follows:

    1. Performance. It is expressed in the volume of water that passes through the body of the device per unit of time. It has several nuances when choosing. So, if fast disinfection is required, it is better to give preference to devices with low current of water through them. This will increase the power consumption, but it will help to disinfect all the water in one pass.
    2. The size of the gap. This is an important point, which determines how much water will be radiated simultaneously. Because of its properties to absorb rays almost instantaneously, the water layer should be kept as small as possible. Therefore, the slot through which all fluid in the aquarium will be pumped must be narrow.
    3. Wavelength. The shorter the better, but do not forget about security. The average value is 250-260 nm, longer wavelengths will rapidly lose their bactericidal properties. For example, at 300, the efficiency is 16 times lower, and at 400 – at 10,000.

    Based on this data, and you can choose a reliable machine. You need to be guided first of all by the volume of the aquarium, so as not to lose the power of the quartz lamp.
