It can be said that the phytofilter has only one drawback – you cannot buy it in the store, you have to do it yourself. However, it is not difficult to make an economy option: it’s enough to take half of a cut plastic bottle along a long tray made of light plastic, cut several holes in the bottom, and drill larger holes in the bottom for entering and draining water.
Next, the tank is filled with a substrate at a height of 5-8 cm, plants are placed there, a hose or flute from a filter or compressor is inserted into the water inlet, and the whole structure is fixed on the back wall of the aquarium on suckers or clamps so that its lower part is in water .
Water from the filter under pressure passes through the substrate with the roots and is poured out of the holes back into the aquarium. This design is suitable for an open aquarium, or in the case when it can be cut off part of the cover.
If you want something more beautiful and your hands are in place, there is no limit to perfection: phytofilters are made of plastic, plexiglass or aquarium glass and decorated with special panels, put them on a shelf above a closed aquarium, and they are supplied with sealed hoses. It is only necessary to follow the general rules:
- Phyto filter should not be located below the level of the aquarium;
- tray depth should not be more than twice the width;
- the length of the tray should not be greater than the length of the rear wall of the aquarium;
- it is better to use gravel of a fraction of 3-8 mm as a soil; you can mix it with expanded clay, a layer of substrate 5-12 cm;
- if the phyto-filter is removed from the aquarium, the water inlet opening should be located at a height of 2-3 cm from the bottom so that it does not dry out if the pump is turned off;
- the amount of water passing through the phyto-filter should be from 3-4 volumes of the aquarium per day to 1-1.5 volumes per hour, if the pump connected to it is more powerful, then a splitter should be placed on it so that some of the water goes to the aquarium bypassing the plant tray;
- It is recommended that a sponge be placed behind the water inlet, which will carry out coarse mechanical filtration, which will allow less frequent cleaning of the filter.
Care phytofilter is not difficult and usually consists in washing the sponge as it is contaminated, sifonka soil every few months and, if necessary, pruning and the formation of plants.
By the way, such a filter can be organized even in a small shrimp or nano aquarium, using the usual mounted waterfall as a tray. It will be nice and effective.
Thus, the phytofilter is a very useful and sometimes almost indispensable thing for an aquarium, while it is inexpensive and not too complicated to manufacture. Try it and you will be pleasantly surprised.
