Mir Takashi Amano

All aquarium lovers know the name of Takashi Amano (1954 -2015), a Japanese famous landscape photographer and aquarist, oriental-style guru from the Japanese city of Niigata. His ideas are the best that can be used to decorate an aquarium, because they are based on maximum proximity to nature, naturalness and naturalness.

Making aquarium – a special science. It is not enough just to take a container, plant some plants there, set up figures, pour water and launch a dozen fishes.

In aquariums, too, there is a special technique for locating stones, plants, and snags. The design of tanks for fish is called an aquascape, and the people involved in this are aquascapers. The most difficult level of such skill is hardscape.

Here you will not meet banal plastic plants, castles, ships, grottoes.

Takashi Amano – the author of a new wave in the design of designer aquariums – from childhood was fond of aquarium fish. Biography of the master is inextricably linked with this hobby.

At school, Amano received an award for studying the Chinese aquarium of paradise. Being a professional cyclist until 1990, he invested all his money in photography and aqua design.

As a lover of exotic fish and flora of ponds, he, a professional photographer, has visited the West African rainforests, the island of Borneo and the Amazonian lowland since 1975. With his wide-format camera, he made his way where no man’s foot had walked before him.

In 1977 he developed a carbon dioxide supply system for aquariums. In the early 80s, Takashi created his own studio (or rather, a research center) Aqua Design Amano (ADA) for the production of aquarium equipment.

After 20 years, the company’s turnover amounted to $ 12.2 million. In 1992, the famous book by Takashi Amano, The World of Natural Aquariums (Nature Aquarium World) was published. The author described aquarium fish and plants.

Also, the guru spoke about freshwater aquascape. Described how to create Japanese gardens in an aquarium. In 1997 another book came out – “Aquarium.

Plant Paradise. In it, the author revealed the secrets of growing aquatic plants with a lush carpet using Riccia fluitans and Glossostigma elatinoides.

To limit plant growth, he first began using shrimp in aquariums. In 2001, Amano held the first international competition among masters and amateurs of the IAPLC aquascape.

In June 2003, for the winners of the competition, Amano Corporation opened an exposition of Takashi Amano’s author’s works in the Natural Aquarium Gallery. This exhibition has become a true philosophy, originating from the gardens of Zen, the Japanese courtyard and even from the most ancient Japanese culture.

The Takashi Amano aquarism system uses only natural materials — living plants, fish, and microorganisms. In the aquarium, impassable jungles of Amazonia, and Chanthaburi mangroves or corners of wildlife, seen by the keen gaze of the photographer, can be recreated.

Aquascape philosophy celebrates the fragile beauty of nature.

Amano’s aquariums are like living photos with its amazing nature world. In his aquariums are connected:

  • compactness;
  • thoughtful content;
  • ease of use;
  • beauty.

The biological factor takes into account all the subtleties of the underwater ecosystem. To maintain the ecological balance in aquariums create ideal conditions. Only in the complex of all the factors listed below can success be achieved:

  • substrate layout;
  • filtering circuit;
  • water conditioners;
  • carbon dioxide supply;
  • aquarium tools;
  • devices for water design;
  • fish food with filigree precision recipes.

These include temperature, light and pressure. The temperature is measured with a thermometer. The approach to the illumination of the Japanese aquarist Takashi Amano is significantly different from the usual.

It does not measure watts per liter of water. According to the characteristics of the lighting, he determined that the light correlated with the surface area of the water.

Much depends on the length, width and height of the aquarium, on the state of the water, heating the air. Correct to measure in lumens – this is the opinion of the master. Photosynthesis in plants occurs only in the light.

According to the degree of formation of oxygen bubbles on plants a few hours after turning on the lamp, it can be judged that there is enough light. Maestro Amano used the following suspensions: ADA Grand Solar I C LL – T 5 2×36 Watts and one MGL MN – HQ 1,150 W or MGN MN – HQ I 150 w.

His conclusion: halogen lamps alone or in combination with fluorescent lamps is the best option for professional care of aquarium plants.

The chemical factor (pH, water hardness, content of gases, mineral and organic substances in water and soil) is also important. A medium with a pH of 7 is considered neutral. If it is below 7, then it is an acidic medium, and above it is alkaline.

For many aquatic plants, pH is required in the range of 6.5–8.0 units. You can find out the composition of water by a litmus test or by conducting chemical analysis using reagents.

To prevent stagnation of water, Takashi Amano has developed its own organization of fluid movement in an aquarium. He invented how, using special pipes for intake and discharge of water from a canister filter installed in a special way, make the flow of water be like in a stream or river.

The filter performs several functions:

  • creates water movement;
  • removes the film from the surface;
  • saturates water with oxygen.

It is difficult for an unknowing person to imagine that in an aquascape, as in landscape or interior design, there are styles that create unique aquariums. Freshwater design includes: Dutch, German, Taiwanese and natural styles:

  1. The Dutch style is based on the dense arrangement of spectacularly trimmed aquatic plants. The principle of the golden section prevails here.
  2. German combines both surface and underwater parts of the aquarium.
  3. Taiwanese style very precisely emphasizes the depth and conveys the features of the natural landscape.

In the Forestblind style many klags are used. In the style of Zen Garden, attention is paid to creating elegant compositions.

The inspiration is bonsai and rock garden. In Iwagumi, the rule of 3 stones is applied, among which there can be large ones, sometimes without plants at all.

As an additional option – sand and moss.

Wabi-kusa (Wabi – kusa Style) – this Japanese style combines surface and underwater garden. The plants here are sometimes first grown separately from each other, and then placed together.

Designers can create something like a flying Island of plants – this design can be viewed from four sides.

Designer Takashi Amano – the ancestor of the Japanese style Nature Aquarium. He called for his compositions to live in harmony with nature, because its wealth creates beauty and harmony.

No wonder Takashi Amano’s natural aquarium is called a place of power.
