Mini Aquarium

maintenance, care, compatibility

Big chores with a little underwater miracle.

There are many types of aquariums. They are distinguished by purpose, shape and volume.

Well-designed freshwater and saltwater aquariums, decorative aquariums and aquariums for breeding, aquariums, paintings and giant aquariums built into the walls, large and small aquariums are amazing. From all this variety, you can select a mini-aquarium.

It may have a different shape and volume of not more than 20 liters.

The mini-aquarium fits perfectly into any interior and takes up little space: you can use the fish’s habitat as an original coffee table or put a piece of wildlife on your desktop with a bit of imagination. Very often you can find a similar aquarium, decorated in the form of a giant glass.

The latter option is often used when decorating a cafe.

The influence of the aquarium on the nervous system, and on the whole body is positive. The eyes and the brain rest from the routine, painstaking work when you observe the uniform movement of the fish in a small aquarium.

As for the maintenance of the aquarium of small size, here you can get under the influence of stereotypes. Often, parents buy aquariums for their children, considering that a small aquarium is easier to clean than a large one.

Rather, the “underwater world” of small size is subject to temperature changes and requires frequent water changes. If water is rarely changed, the waste products of fish begin to accumulate on the walls and it will be rather difficult to clean the container with your hands.

In addition, the slightest excess feed, stale at the bottom of such an aquarium, instantly spoils the water and shifts the biological equilibrium.

But if you decide to start a small aquarium, get it “fully loaded.” Specialists will select all the necessary equipment for lighting, water filtration and water heating.

And, despite the equipment, place the aquarium in a room whose temperature is constant. With such a small amount of water, a drop of even 1-2 degrees negatively affects the fish.

When feeding fish, give off a small amount of food so that after feeding there will be no leftovers. Remove excess feed immediately.

When caring for an aquarium, you will have to carry out frequent water changes, until the bacteria stabilize their numbers in the filter. Bacteria convert waste decomposition products into safe substances. A stock of settled water should always be at your disposal.

Water in the aquarium should be changed every three to four days, replacing at least a quarter of the volume of water in a small aquarium.

To prevent algae, an aquarium should not be placed close to the window. Direct sunlight should not fall on it, and the duration of the active daylight should be smoothly increased from six hours immediately after the arrangement of the aquarium to ten hours by the time the biological equilibrium is stabilized.

Separately, I would like to mention this model as a small round aquarium. This kind of aquariums can not be considered successful:

  • first, curved glass has the effect of a lens and distorts the outlines of fish,
  • secondly, the fish themselves see the world in a similar aquarium blurry (many aquarists are sure that this negatively affects their health),
  • thirdly, to clean the rounded glass is difficult, the standard scraper is not suitable for this procedure.

Creating and maintaining biological balance – the optimal ratio of plants, decor and fish for a small aquarium is quite a laborious job. Residents of the aquarium should feel comfortable in a small space.

To do this, do not overload the small aquarium inhabitants.

Fish for a small aquarium is chosen depending on their size and nature. Small fish with a calm, peaceful nature are preferable.

You can combine several species of fish with the same content requirements or create ideal conditions for one breed.

Guppies, small golden and cherry barbs, gourami, glowing tetras are fish for a small aquarium. The aquarium looks good with one goldfish or a cockerel.

Also in such a reservoir, you can settle danios or neons.

Keep track of the size of your pets. With good care, the fish grow in a small aquarium, and it becomes crowded.

Catch large fish in large domestic reservoirs and replace them with young.

There are many forms of a small aquarium: a cube, a glass, a trapezium, hexagons, etc. The smallest aquarium in the world, for example, has a rectangular shape, which only emphasizes its uniqueness. If you still choose a small round aquarium, remember that externally round and rectangular aquariums may seem the same size, but the round aquarium always has a smaller volume.

Choose decorative elements for a small round aquarium according to its volume, small snags and stones, which can also be used as a foundation for fastening plants. For decoration of small aquariums, most often use moss (small pieces) or Hemianthus, and from plants – Anublas, Microsorum and Vesicularia.

In the case of small aquariums, a good solution would be to completely abandon the fish and populate the pond with shrimp. The aquarium with young ampouleries will also look impressive.

A mini-aquarium, like a spark in the dark, will illuminate your apartment with natural peace and beauty.

There is a huge variety of aquariums. They are distinguished not only in form and volume, but also by purpose. Reservoirs can be freshwater or saltwater.

Decorative, made in the form of wall paintings. Giant and miniature, intended for breeding or rearing.

In this variety, there is a separate mini-aquarium, which by volume is no more than 20 liters. Its shape is different.

The minimum volume for the relatively normal existence of the fish can not be less than 3.5 liters.

There are, of course, smaller items, but they usually contain shrimp or snails, or they perform a purely decorative function (there are no living organisms in them).

In the pet store you can buy almost any aquarium. Price depends on displacement and product layout. It ranges from $ 20 to $ 150.

Five- or twenty-liter aquariums amaze with a variety of forms and can be stylized for a specific interior.

The advantages of mini-models include the ability to place them almost anywhere: on a table, bookshelf, wall. Such an aquarium is easy to transport, it can be quickly and easily transferred to a new place.

Perfectly suitable tank and for jigging of young or mating fish. You can also use it as an insulator, setting aside lost or newly acquired individuals.

As a rule, such miniature aquariums are sold complete with all necessary equipment. Pump, filters, lights – everything is neatly and securely mounted into the product itself, there are no unnecessary wires.

Small can be considered an aquarium from 20 to 40 cm in length (I note that there are still nano-aquariums, but this is more of an art). In smaller than these, it is difficult to keep practically any fish, except perhaps the rooster or cardinals. Small aquariums need practically the same equipment as for large ones.

Especially important is the heater and filter. A good lamp does not hurt if you want to keep plants or enjoy your fish to the fullest.

Small aquarium snugly located

Caring for a mini-aquarium is very simple and is based on the same principles as caring for a large one. Replacing a portion of the water is a key point, a little and often, here’s the golden rule.

Very often aquarists clean the tank every month and replace all the water. But only in one case, you need to change in the aquarium more than 50% of the water – if an emergency happens.

In nano-aquariums, a large water change still introduces instability and imbalance. A good habit is to change no more than 10-15% of the water for a mini-aquarium at a time. If you need to replace more, break for several times.

Three times 10% better than one 30%.

Choose a fish for a mini-aquarium is quite a challenge. It is not enough for this simply to choose a small fish, although this is the same factor.

It is also important not to forget that the fish you choose will live in a limited place, which means you cannot stop at the types of aggressive or territorial. A common mistake is to buy male swordtails, dwarf gourami or cichlids, they can be real hooligans.

And the types of active fish, such as danios, get along well, but can interfere with other fish because of their vigor.
A good choice for a mini aquarium is small barbs, for example, cherry and many types of haracin ones – neons, rasbora, erythrozonuses. To clean the aquarium, corridors of all kinds are well suited, or algae eater – ototsinklyus.

From shrimp – Amano shrimp and cherry shrimp.
There are still not very famous fish, but which are ideal for small aquariums:

  • Pseudomogil gertrude
  • Copper tetra or Hasemania nana
  • Orizias vovora (Oryzias woworae) or rice fish
  • Tetra Amanda

For the upper layer (although they float everywhere), partilias and mollies. Guppies are also very popular, but I would not advise taking pedigreeds, because of their very weak resistance to diseases, the result of intragenital crossing, you can take an endler’s guppy. The endlers are 2 times smaller than normal guppies, much brighter, but the fins are not voile.

Breed more often, the fry are larger, but less at a time than the usual guppies.

The male cockerel can become a highlight, but only it is better to keep him alone, because of the violent temper in relation to relatives.

What kind of fish can you keep in mini aquariums? In a small 10-20 liter tank you need to settle pets with miniature body size. Fish 2-6 centimeters in length will carry such a volume of water.

But remember that even small fish want to swim in a spacious environment. They can not be kept in containers that will restrict movement.

Territorial and aggressive fish cannot be accommodated in mini aquariums. Which do not need to settle in a 10-liter aquariums?

These are swordtails, barbus averages, cichlids, gourami, danios. They have an active and energetic disposition, they need more space for shelter.

In the aquarium of 10-20 liters, you can settle small barbs, pseudomogil gertrudy, rice fish, cherry barbus, rasbor, erythrosalonus, neon, tetra Amanda. Also there you can keep such fish and shrimp: catfish ottsinklyus, corridor, shrimp amano, cherry shrimp, copper tetra.

A representative of the genus Pecilia, viviparous fishes get along well in mini tanks.

You need to buy breeds of fish with a strong immunity, that is, not actually thoroughbred, but hybrids. If you do not have the opportunity to buy a spacious “house” for your small pet, you need to buy a small aquarium with a capacity of 10 liters.

There are also often settled well-known Siamese cockerels. The cockerel can live alone, does not get along with relatives, this is after all a fighting fish.

In aquariums it is not customary to start small. Small volumes create big problems, as the miniature system is devoid of inertia, and its biological equilibrium is unstable.

Nevertheless, aquariums of small sizes are now becoming increasingly popular. They are less expensive, compact, and with proper design and care amazingly beautiful.

But to make it so that a small aquarium brings great pleasure is not easy.

Small consider aquariums less than 30-40 liters, usually from 5 to 20 liters. Often they are called nano aquariums (from the Greek nano – “small, tiny, dwarf”), emphasizing with this term not only size, but also their modernity and adaptability. There are also microaquariums, their capacity is 1-2 liters, and animals do not lodge in them, with the exception of some species of snails. The world’s smallest aquarium with fish was created by Omsk miniaturist Anatoly Konenko and his son Stanislav.

They placed in 10 ml of water a primer, a specially designed mini-compressor, small cladofor bushes and a few danio fry.

We will immediately agree that we will not call a round ten-liter jar with a goldfish a nano-aquarium because it is not an aquarium, but a mockery of fish and all the principles of aquarism.

An aquarium, no matter how large, is an equilibrium biological system whose inhabitants feel comfortable. To achieve this in a small amount is a whole science. But, if this is possible, the results can be simply amazing.

Such aquariums, where a living biotope is reproduced in a tiny volume, resemble Japanese bonsai art or large-scale models of luxury cars: small ones, but everything is real.

Of course, not all small aquariums are worthy of aquascaping competitions or books of records, but each of them should please the eye of its owner and create a comfortable environment for its inhabitants.

Nano aquariums are rectangular, cubic or close to it. Cover usually with a transparent coverslip. glass that allows you to admire them from above.

Keep them away from drafts and direct sunlight and closer to the outlet that you need to connect equipment.

Equipment for nano aquariums is generally the same as for large ones, that is, a filter (in some cases it is enough to have a pump with an aerator), lighting devices, a heater if necessary, better complete with a thermostat, and a carbon dioxide supply system.

For those who do not have the experience and time to select aquarium technology, fully equipped nano aquariums are on sale. The best in terms of price and quality are the complexes of the Aqua El Shrim Set and Dennerle Nano Cube series.

And if you want to save money or it is interesting to choose all the stuffing for your nanocube yourself, there is plenty to choose from.

Choose plants in the nano aquarium should be depending on the power of lighting and whether the supply of carbon dioxide is organized. If the light is bright, the soil is specialized, containing organic matter and CO2, then you can plant any medium-sized plants, here only the preferences of the owner play a role.

In a more modestly equipped aquarium, plants are limited to unpretentious and slow-growing plants.

Lileopsis is a Brazilian cube, hemianthus of cube, and marcilia are used as ground cover. Japanese Blix, which is considered a groundcover in large aquariums, looks like a bush in small volumes.

In addition, different types of Anubias, cryptocoryne, Pogostemons, Rotal, ferns are grown. For decorating snags, stones and items of equipment use mosses. Often you can meet the cladofor balls.

In short, there is room for creativity almost like in a large aquarium.

When choosing inhabitants for a small aquarium, first of all, of course, one should pay attention to their size. Fish should not be more than 3-4 cm long, and if the aquarium is completely “nano”, up to 15 liters – more than 2-3 cm.

In addition, the fish need a peaceful, not too voracious, not territorial, and quite unpretentious, at least if this is your first experience in nano aquariums. Well and, of course, they must be brightly and diversely colored and active, so that it would be interesting to watch them.

Under these conditions is quite a large number of fish. The most honorable place in nano aquariums is occupied by carp representatives – zebrafish, micro-assemblies, boraras.

The micro-collection of the galaxy with its amazing color is truly the queen of small volumes.

It is possible to lodge neon and tetra amanda from charicine fishes in such an aquarium, from guppies and petillia from viviparous. In addition, you can make small catfish, for example, the corridor-pygmy or otozinclus.

Feel good in a small volume of the cockerel.

Fish is better to take flocks of 3-4 pieces (of course, except for pugnacious cockerels), so they will feel more comfortable. The density of planting small fish should be about 1 individual per 2 liters of water.

In addition to fish, different types of shrimp live in a nano aquarium, dwarf crayfish (they are incompatible with shrimps), frogs hymeno-viruses.

You can decorate a nano aquarium in a different style. Iwagumi styles are popular among aqua-designers – different types of stone decoration forms, ryubekuka – decoration with snags, wabikusa – in the form of a hummock with plants. But here the taste and preferences of the owner are crucial.

For example, if an aquarium is in a child’s room, it is appropriate to place a mermaid’s castle or a sunken ship and toy scuba divers into it. The main thing is that the scenery should not take up too much space (as a general rule, not more than a quarter of the bottom surface and half the height), hide the aquarium equipment and leave room for plants and fish.

In addition, if there are shrimps in the aquarium, it must be borne in mind that any objects protruding from the water may contribute to their escape from the aquarium.

Soil in small aquariums usually use a two-layer one: the bottom layer is a nutrient substrate, the top one is gravel, the total thickness of the layer should be 3-4 cm.

Caring for a small aquarium is not too time consuming, as long as it is permanent. If you can forget about a successful two-hundred-liter jar for a month (do not carry out cleaning and water changes in it, but only feed the fish), and nothing bad will happen, well, except that there will be a little less beauty, then this number will not work with the nano aquarium.

It is impossible to linger for one day with cleaning or slightly overfeeding the fish, this can lead to irreversible consequences. Depending on the size and population of the aquarium, a schedule should be drawn up for switching on and off lighting, feeding animals, changing water (usually they are held weekly at 1 / 3-1 / 2), cleaning the bottom.

This schedule must be strictly followed. Most importantly, a small aquarium requires close monitoring, and immediate action is taken with the slightest sign of imbalance.

It is highly recommended to use water quality tests at first after launch to track at least ammonia and nitrite.

Of course, a small aquarium in an apartment or office is not just a piece of furniture, it requires care and attention, but with the proper selection of equipment and inhabitants and following simple rules, it is quite affordable even for an unskilled person in aquariums.

We all have ever dreamed of having a fish. So nice to watch their calm and measured life. However, not everyone will decide to start a large aquarium, and there are many reasons for this, for example:

  • lack of funds for its purchase and maintenance;
  • lack of space for location;
  • lack of knowledge in the field of aquarium;
  • protest from the rest of the inhabitants of the house, etc.

A mini-aquarium that doesn’t take up much space and does not require comprehensive care will be a completely acceptable alternative. Pet shops in the city offer quite a satisfactory assortment of this type of aquarium, but they are all standard and a little boring. Alternatively, there is a very real opportunity to make a mini aquarium with your own hands.

Let’s look at the main stages through which you will need to go, deciding to make a mini aquarium yourself.

You need to stock up with transparent silicone, glue, glass, any degreaser and perseverance. Think over, and better delineate the dimensions of the proposed design. Remember that to fully live the fish volume should not be less than 4 liters.

If such an aquarium is great for you, then it is worth thinking about replacing the fish with beautiful algae or shells. So, the sketch is ready. Using a glass cutter, cut the glass into pieces of the required size.

Grind the edges with acetone or other solvent and glue. After drying, it is worth carefully sealing the seams with transparent silicone and let it dry well. From that, how slowly work will be performed, accuracy and esthetics of the final product directly depends.

It is better to make a round mini aquarium out of a transparent vase of the required size and shape.

The finished aquarium is dry, now you need to take care of its design. Any kind of aquarium stones, previously boiled in a weak solution of potassium permanganate, can serve as the soil. Of course, it is better to choose the pebbles of the original shape and color.

Landscaping will be plants for a mini aquarium and algae, which are small in size and will not occupy space for fish. In some cases it makes sense to apply a special decorative film imitating an underwater landscape or plastic aquarium plants.

Make yourself a mini aquarium with light is not a big deal. It is enough to build a cover of glass, plastic or other material and equip it with a light bulb, a powerful diode and a battery – and let there be light!

It should be understood that the equipment of this type of aquariums with all kinds of devices will greatly reduce its aesthetic qualities. If the look of your pet requires constant water purification, you should purchase and install a small filter, a compressor for a mini aquarium. The need to purchase the latter will disappear if the inhabitants of the aquarium will be fish that can breathe atmospheric air.

You may also need a mini pump for the aquarium and a pump. Their purchase also depends entirely on the needs of the “settlers” to the living conditions.

Install them is not particularly difficult.

Desktop mini aquarium – ideal for desktop in the office or in the room of the student. This piece of furniture is able to create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility, to create conditions for concentration, or vice versa, to give an opportunity to escape.

Marine mini aquarium. The maintenance and arrangement of this type of aquarium requires a large degree of responsibility, care and money.

There is a need to constantly add water, observe the necessary temperature drops, certain lighting and composition of water.

Many thought about acquiring the most silent pets – fish. But they need an aquarium that can take up a lot of space and cost a lot. In small apartments or offices this can be a problem.

Therefore, in this article we will consider small options.

What kind of fish can you keep in mini aquariums? In a small 10-20 liter tank you need to settle pets with miniature body size. Fish 2-6 centimeters in length will carry such a volume of water.
