Making aquarium do-it-yourself at home

The main task of any novice aquarist is to buy a tank for fish. However, it is not always possible to find a suitable option that fits perfectly into the interior of the room and will meet all the requirements of the owner. If such a situation arises, you can make an aquarium with your own hands.

This will make it possible to save money and make a tank of materials that are safe for health.

For beginners in the creation of aquariums the ideal option would be to create a rectangular aquarium

Before you make an aquarium at home, you need to properly conduct several preparatory activities. The quality of this work will depend on the simplicity and speed of production.

One of the keys to successful construction of an aquarium is the preparation of all the necessary tools. It is very important to do this work in advance so that during the manufacture of the aquarium, not to be distracted by trifles and not to look for one or another object.

To work you need to buy, borrow or rent such tools:

  • diamond glass cutter;
  • glue gun;
  • a coil of construction tape;
  • roulette;
  • substrates;
  • metal corner;
  • stationery knife;
  • small spatula;
  • sponge;
  • soft rags;
  • metal ruler;
  • special clamps for immobilizing glass during cutting.

Particular attention should be paid to the purchase of glue. With it, you can build an aquarium from individual parts.

Very often sellers of building materials advise more durable glue for glass, but buying it is strictly forbidden, as there is a high probability of poisoning future inhabitants of the aquarium.

Gluing the aquarium will not seem so difficult if you use high-quality silicone glue.

Preference should be given to a special glue for an aquarium, since it is not so toxic and absolutely harmless not only for fish, but also for other living creatures.

This material has following characteristics:

  1. Does not contain toxic substances in the composition.
  2. Strongly fastens construction details.
  3. Possesses sufficient elasticity that allows to put it without effort on preparations.
  4. Does not change its color after drying and in use.
  5. Dries as fast as possible.
  6. For a long time retains its properties.

When buying glue should pay attention not only to its composition or purpose, but also for the shelf life. If you miss this factor, you can buy poor-quality material, which will lead to poor gluing and rapid destruction of the aquarium.

The most suitable option is to buy silicone sealant. For beginners it is better to choose its colorless variety.

It will help to hide some errors and reliably seals the joints.

To make an aquarium with your own hands at home, you need to choose the right base material – glass. Not only the reliability of the design, but also its attractive appearance will depend on its quality.

To create a tank is better to take silicate glass, rather than organic. It will not release into the water substances harmful to fish, and will also retain its satisfactory appearance over a long period of time.

Silicate glass has 8 levels of quality, but before buying you need to familiarize yourself with some of the features. For the “house” of fish you can use only some species that are missing the following characteristics:

  • increased fragility;
  • distortion of objects and living beings;
  • low level of polishing.

In order not to spend a lot of time wasted, you need to immediately select the display glass. It is strong, dense and perfectly copes with the increased loads that are inevitable in the manufacture and operation of the aquarium. Such glass is as transparent as possible and does not distort the contents of the tank.

Its only drawback is the high cost.

However, it will surely pay off, since an aquarium of this material can serve the owner for several decades.

When buying you need:

  1. Ensure that there are no air bubbles inside the glass. These minor defects can not only spoil the appearance, but also destroy the product.
  2. Check the entire glass surface for cracks and chips.
  3. Acquire display glass only from proven and reputable manufacturers.
  4. Take into account the additional consumption of material for the manufacture of stiffeners.
  5. Make sure that the glass is new and not used before.
  6. Inspect the edges of the material, as they are often chipped.

When making an aquarium out of glass with your own hands, it is important to choose the right material thickness. For the smallest tank, professionals advise choosing this indicator at 5 mm, and for large ones – 19 mm.

From this process depends on the success of activities to create an aquarium. It is important not only to properly cut the glass, but also to accurately guess the size. To do this, draws a diagram of the future product and selects the optimal length, width, depth.

These figures may depend on the size of the free space in the apartment and personal preferences of the owner.

Cutting glass, especially thick – very difficult and painstaking work. Without proper experience in this matter, you can make a mistake and spoil the material.

Therefore, it is best to entrust this operation to a professional. This approach will provide:

  • precisely maintained dimensions;
  • high-quality and neat cuts;
  • no chips or small cracks that may appear when low-quality cutting.

After all the manipulations with the glass should get a few blanks with the desired size. If at least one of them is of irregular shape or width, then there is a risk of mismatch of parts during assembly.

Before joining the blanks into a single unit should be cut:

  • one front and one rear window;
  • 2 side;
  • 1 lower;
  • 4 identical parts for piling and bottom reinforcement;
  • 2 screeds;
  • 2 edges

For self-creation of an aquarium, it is best to choose tanks with a volume of 100 or 200 liters. Making large tanks at home will be very problematic. The whole process is rather difficult and requires utmost care as well as attentiveness at every stage.

However, if you do everything consistently and do not rush, then the work will turn out qualitatively.

After the cutting is completed, we process the sheets with a degreaser, which can be white alcohol or gasoline

Homemade aquarium is made with respect such a sequence of actions:

  • Two wooden slats are taken, they are laid blank, intended to reinforce the bottom.
  • Gluing sites are degreased with any alcohol-containing compound.
  • Silicone sealant is applied.
  • The second part to strengthen the bottom is placed on top and pressed down. The applied adhesive should be evenly distributed on the surface.
  • Glued parts are delayed for several hours until the sealant dries and hardens.
  • During this time, side windows are degreased.
  • After that, about 2 centimeters recede from each edge and a strip of masking tape is glued.
  • The glue is taken again and applied to the side surfaces of already bonded base parts.
  • The side glass is applied to the bottom of the future aquarium and gently pressed. Excess sealant is removed with hands moistened with soap and water.
  • A strip of scotch is removed and the side is supported by a heavy object (armchair, chair, etc.). This is done so that the fresh seam does not break, and the glass does not fall on the floor.
  • The second side part is glued in the same way, and the product is dried for 24 hours.
  • After a specified period of time, the reliability and tightness of the connection is checked.

Gluing edges occurs perpendicular to the walls

  • Then the design is turned to the side.
  • The front glass is taken and glued with masking tape around the perimeter. It is necessary to retreat from the edge of at least 2 millimeters.
  • After that, a layer of silicone is applied on the sides of the structure and is evenly distributed over the surface.
  • The front glass is applied to the right place and securely fixed. Remnants of glue are removed in the same way as when gluing the side parts.
  • The masking tape is removed, and the excess silicone on the outer surface is cut off with a sharp knife. This can be done only after the complete curing of the sealant.
  • In this form, the product dries for 12 hours.
  • After this time, the opposite (back) side of the tank is attached. This is done in a similar way.
  • At the next stage of work, the edges are glued. To do this, from the upper edge of the rear and front glass recedes a few millimeters.
  • A scotch tape is applied and silicone is applied.
  • The ribs are applied to the structure and securely glued.
  • After the glue dries, two screeds are attached (in the middle and on one of the edges).

Check the aquarium for strength and tightness

Once the aquarium is assembled, it is left for another day for the final curing of the glue. After that, it is filled to the brim with water and checked for strength and tightness.

If everything is done correctly, then there will be no problems during testing.

Separately, you need to make a cover for the aquarium. It is necessary so that the fish do not accidentally jump out of their “house” and not die from lack of air.

The simplest version of the lid is a thin plastic sheet, which is placed on the stiffeners. For more convenience, you can attach to it some kind of pen.

Making an aquarium with your own hands is a rather difficult event that requires the master to be careful and able to work with glass. With the right approach to business and compliance with all the recommendations of professionals can significantly simplify and speed up the process.

The result should be a quality-made aquarium in which you can settle several types of beautiful fish. They will please the owner with their appearance and remind about the work they have done on their own.
