Making an external filter for the aquarium do it yourself

Many experienced holders of aquariums will not breed fish, without having the necessary equipment for the device aquarium. One of the leading roles is played by filtration systems, which are used to purify water from mechanical and biological components and to saturate a liquid with oxygen.

You can purchase internal and external filters for the aquarium in specialized stores or do it yourself, thereby saving money.

All filters for cleaning aquariums are divided into external and internal. The latter work directly inside the aquarium, and the former carry out water purification outside the fish house.

External filtration systems differ in capacity, design type and content. Today, small suspension devices for small aquariums, a variety of plant filters, as well as canisters, are being produced.

In addition, there are large filtration systems called sumps. External filters have several undeniable advantages:

  • organically fit into the design of the aquarium;
  • have much more power and efficiency compared to internal systems;
  • do not occupy space inside the aquarium;
  • suitable for large volume of fluid.

Of course, there are some drawbacks to such devices, for example, the filtration system requires a separate location. This is not critical if there is free space next to the aquarium.

The price of external devices is much higher than internal.

If desired, you can hide the filters, or turn them into an element of decor. To save money, you can make your own filtering device from scrap materials.

The advantage of self-made filters is that the system will be customized to the characteristics of a particular capacity.

The most common and available materials for filling the filter system of the aquarium are sintepon and foam rubber. They are able to take any form, as well as act as mechanical and biological filters. In the pores of these materials is enough space for the spread of bacteria.

Periodically it is necessary to rinse the filler to get rid of mucus that clogs the filter system. In addition, sludge can accumulate in the pores, which should not be located inside the filtration system, hindering its operation. There are several options for filling the external aquarium filters:

  • Filter wool is a low-cost filler that is reusable. It is easy to clean, with its help the filter space is filled tight enough that eliminates the likelihood of a leak. It is the best option for use at the final stage of cleaning.
  • Ceramic rings are used for the same distribution of water flows, which ensure the transport of oxygen to bacteria.

  • Sintered glass. The most convenient option if the material purchased in the form of balls. Special baking technology contributes to the formation of pores in the products. In the latter live beneficial microorganisms that process nitrites and nitrates. The effectiveness of glass is much higher than that of other materials that are used for biological treatment.
  • Ceramic tubules are used to breed bacteria in small pores.
  • Zeolite is a budget, but very effective sorbent that quickly absorbs an element such as ammonium from water. With it, you can get rid of nitrates in the aquarium.
  • Activated carbon. Many experts argue about the feasibility of using this material for cleaning aquariums. Some tend to think that it is better to use small granules for filters. It should be noted that they must have a lot of pores, because this indicator affects the efficiency of absorption. In addition, the quality of the material can be determined by the presence of characteristic luster and special dust. Before placing the material in the filter system, rinse it thoroughly.
  • Peat is a natural material for filtration systems. It is affordable, successfully copes with many tasks – reduces the Ph level, slows the growth of fungi, has a positive effect on the inhabitants of the aquarium.

Before starting work on the manufacture of an external aquarium filter, it is necessary to prepare all the components. For work you will need:

  • water pump;
  • sewer pipe having a diameter of 110 mm;
  • 4 plugs;
  • 4 input glands;
  • Mayevsky’s crane;
  • transparent hose with a diameter of 80 mm;
  • crane, which will regulate the pressure at the outlet;
  • selected fillers;
  • silicone.

Often in the manufacture of filtering systems used pumps that have been used, for example, in old submersible filters. It should be noted that such a device can be used for both classical systems and nano aquariums.

The latter have gained popularity due to compactness and ease of placement in any premises. Step-by-step process of making an outdoor filter for an aquarium with your own hands:

  1. As the basis of the filtering device, you can take a docking coupling, the inner diameter of which is identical to the diameter of the inner tube at the point of entry of the plug. You can use a plastic plumbing tube or a coupling for repair. It is necessary to cut a piece with a length of 17−20 cm
  2. In one stub cut 5 holes, which will then be installed crane Mayevsky, as well as the seals. It should be borne in mind that the holes must be made 1 mm smaller than the diameter of the glands and the valve.
  3. Tightly fix all the parts, the joints for better sealing is recommended fluff silicone.
  4. Put the hose on the pipe that comes out of the pump and fix it tightly. It is necessary to choose the size of the hose as accurately as possible so that it is tight on the tube. Then insert the structure in the glands and tighten it. Pump should be tightly located on the stub. In one of the small glands to stretch the wire from the pump, before cutting it.

  7. Make the bottom cover of the filtering device. To do this, on one of the plugs with holes to remove the end part. Cut out the ring to reduce in diameter by about 1 cm.
  8. Cut a ring out of the tube, which should be equal in height to the distance between the two plugs. Assemble the parts together, place the filler in the filter element.
  9. External filtration system for the aquarium is ready. In the process, one of the small glands remained unused. Through it, you can remove the temperature sensor so that it does not interfere inside the aquarium.

If you need a large filter, you can make a more complex model on the same principle. The assembly scheme is identical to the previous one, but a biofilter and foam rubber can be used as filtering materials, which will be laid on the mesh partition.

Making an external filter for an aquarium is much more complicated than an internal one. This is due to the fact that the latter is simpler in structure, therefore even a beginning aquarist can make it. For the manufacture of the device will need:

  • plastic bottle with a capacity of not more than 0.5 liters;
  • synthetic winterizer;
  • a plastic tube whose diameter is equal to the neck of the bottle;
  • hose and compressor;
  • pebbles.

The latter will be used as a filler. Phased master class in the manufacture of filtration systems:

  • Divide the bottle in two parts so that one is larger than the other. Smaller detail should be with the neck. Bowl guide the neck up and apply such a force to get a dense structure.
  • Make holes on the outside of the circumference for the passage of water. Their diameters should be 3-4 mm. The optimal placement is 2 rows of 6 holes each.
  • Through the neck of the bowl hold the pipe in such a way that there is no gap between them.
  • Pipe to make such a length that it was enough to be located above the surface. The design itself should not be at the bottom, preventing the flow of fluid.
  • Pour a layer of gravel on the bowl, and then lay out the synthetic winterizer. Install the hose into the tube and secure it. The design is placed inside the aquarium. After turning on the compressor, the device will work. After some time, live bacteria will appear in the device, which are necessary for the decomposition of ammonia into nitrates.

The principle of the filter is as follows: air bubbles, getting into the pipe, move up, and then attract water flows. The air-saturated liquid enters the upper layer of gravel, then moves downward, entering the aquarium.

Cleaning is performed by a layer of padding polyester that prevents sludge from settling on gravel.

There are several types of bottom filters that can be used for both large and small aquariums. This way you can make a filter system for a round aquarium.

The first option is to manufacture the device from a plastic box. The case uses a strong plastic box with a lid.

The latter should tightly cover the base. It is advisable to make the lid or the box body itself transparent so that you can see the degree of contamination.

A plastic tube is glued into the cover, then holes are made on the side. It should be noted that they must be of such size that the fish do not fall into them.

You must first prepare the filter elements, which are then placed inside the box. It is recommended to use a ceramic water dispenser, which can be easily found in stores.

Another option is to manufacture a filter unit using a glass jar, which will play the role of the body. Capacity should be no more than 1 liter.

Close the jar with a plastic lid, and then make holes for liquid to come in. With another cover to make a partition, which then lay the material for filtering.

An alternative to a glass jar can be a ceramic container filled with nylon threads or quartz sand.
