How to prepare aquarium water :: Equipment and accessories
Water for an aquarium should be clean, transparent, containing all the trace elements necessary for the life of fish and plants. To prepare the aquarium water takes time and special tools. So take the ordinary tap water …
Tap water without boiling is suitable as aquarium water, if it does not contain impurities of any metals, magnesium salts, calcium and other constituents that are harmful to fish and plants. All the air and chlorine contained in such water will evaporate in just a week of settling.
Looking ahead, we note that you need to add or change the water also separated or boiled.
If you have access to a spring with spring water, you can use it. Just for safety, hold some cheap fish in this aquarium water and follow their well-being – if something goes wrong, it will not be particularly expensive.
If possible, before pouring water into the aquarium, take a portion of the soil and water used in another aquarium. Thus, you will bring the necessary microorganisms and accelerate the process of formation of the aquarium mode.
One of the most important parameters of aquarium water is its hardness. From the rigidity depends on the possibility of keeping and breeding certain types of fish and the cultivation of plants.
Later, the water hardness in the aquarium is naturally stabilized: it will increase due to the evaporation of water, the vital activity of plants, fish and snails, since they absorb calcium from the water. By the way, it is believed that distilled water has zero hardness.
If the aquarium water is too hard, it can be softened. To do this, there are two simple ways: freezing and boiling. In the first case, the water is poured into a low-frost-resistant vessel of large diameter and put in the freezer.
As soon as the water from the sides freezes, the ice is punched and the unfrozen water is poured into the sink. The ice remaining in the pot is melted.
The water thus obtained has a much lower hardness. For the second option, water should be boiled for an hour, cool and drain 2/3 of the upper layer.
The value of pH (pH) is subject to certain fluctuations. For example, long-term solar illumination of an aquarium with a large number of plants increases its level to 9. At night, the amount of carbon dioxide in aquarium water increases (fish and plants breathe, absorbing oxygen), the pH drops to 6, which is not very good.
Watch for aquarium water with liquid indicators – tests for aquarium water.
However, to speed up the process of preparing aquarium water, it is enough to purchase a conditioner for aquarium water at the pet shop – a special tool that neutralizes harmful impurities and makes water suitable for occupancy after 10 minutes. It is necessary to strictly observe the dosage of the conditioner.
Now you can proceed to the actual filling of the aquarium with water. Fill the aquarium to a level of 10-15 cm, plant the plants and equip the aquarium.
When the planting is completed, continue filling the tank to a level of 3-5 centimeters from the top edge of the aquarium.
After pouring water into the aquarium, complex processes will begin: rotting of broken plants may begin, the rapid development of microorganisms. Water from clear can become whitish-muddy. Do not confuse, after a while most of the microorganisms die, not getting enough nutrients, the water will again become transparent.
To purify water from turbidity, you can settle in a daphnia aquarium, tadpoles, snails.
To protect the aquarium water from dust, the aquarium must be tightly closed.
The temperature regime of water in an aquarium should be constantly monitored, since many species of fish and plants have their own parameters, most favorable for their growth and development. The temperature in the aquarium depends on the location of the reservoir: for example, sunlight entering through the window of the room heats the water.
Therefore, the more light, the higher the temperature of the water. The temperature difference of the aquarium water is undesirable, and its sharp fluctuations are generally unacceptable.
Perhaps a smooth change in water temperature at 2-3 ° C, depending on the time of day.
There is no absolutely pure water in the world, it is mined in laboratories using step-by-step distillation. Water from a water supply system or natural source always contains impurities of various substances that play an important role in the ecosystem. Considering that many modern people keep fish at home, everyone wants to use the highest quality water for them.
But what should be the water so that it can fill the home aquarium?
For a long time it was believed that spring water, recruited from a crystal clear stream, is best suited for ornamental freshwater fish. Perfectly clean, transparent, odorless and dirt free – that’s exactly the kind of tank you can fill! It turned out that typing this is not always safe.
Its difference from tap water is high rigidity. Even the soap in it is difficult to dissolve, what can we say about fish food. Due to the high content of magnesium and calcium salts, it has a detrimental effect on the health of the fish and their offspring (eggs).
Unfortunately, the water from the spring is not recommended to add to an artificial aquarium. Occasionally it is mixed with water to increase rigidity.
Since the springs have increased hardness, can it be better to pour soft water into the tank – rainwater or distilled water? Again, not always – just mixing it with the plumbing. There are fish that love the environment with softened water, but many freshwater species still prefer medium, neutral water.
Such water flows in domestic rivers and lakes – you can pour it purified into the aquarium, filling it with not all the space.

What habitat most love aquarium fish
What water is needed for an aquarium? Combining water from different sources, it is impossible to achieve the ideal parameters.
How many fish, so many requests. Some fish can live in the melt water of mountain lakes, others – in the brown marsh.
In the first case, the water is very hard, in the second – soft. Fish have to settle in a different environment.
It turns out that some fish are orderlies who love rotten water, others do not tolerate such parameters. Rotten environment is detrimental due to humic acids.
Many freshwater biotopes of our country have pH neutral water, medium acidity, low alkalinity. For most aquarium fish, it is suitable.
Water that must be prepared for not very capricious ornamental fish requires preliminary preparation. In the general aquarium it is necessary to fill in soft (sometimes medium hard) pH-neutral water. This can be plain tap water.
In it, live-off and viviparous fish, which perfectly adapt to different conditions, take root well.

The degree of hardness can be measured using litmus paper, the temperature of the water – with a thermometer. Water of high degree of hardness is recommended to be mixed with soft rainwater (filtered) or distilled.
Also, water from clean, melting snow or ice. The listed types of water can be collected in a clean container only after prolonged precipitation; it is enough to pour 30% soft water into infused water from the tap.
Water from the tap can not be poured immediately. It is better to pour it into a glass, and see if the glass is covered with bubbles, whether a strong smell will emanate. Such water is saturated with compounds of gases that fell into it during filtration at the treatment plant.
Having let the fish in such a liquid, the pet’s body will instantly become covered with bubbles, which will penetrate into the gills and internal organs. As a result, the fish will die.
In addition to gas, chlorine is added to water for disinfection, it will also poison living beings.
To get rid of gases, tap water can be poured into glass containers, and let it settle there for several days (2-3 days). There is another quick way: pour water into enameled ware, bring it to the stove to 60 or 80 degrees, set aside and cool.
Boiled water is harmful – it leaves on the walls of dishes scale calcium carbonate and magnesium. Boiled water can be poured into spawning, but in extreme cases. To fill the entire area of the aquarium with boiled water will take a long time.
Another nuance – boiled water kills all the useful microflora.
If you do not have water supply (this occurs in our time), you should go to a clean river or lake (where there are no signs “No swimming!”, Etc.), and take water from there. If it is clean, river fishes (perch, bream, roach) really live and flourish in it, there is a water grid plant, which is a good sign.
To destroy parasites, such water is heated in an enamel pot to 80-90 degrees, but not to make boiled water out of it. The parameters it will be different from the liquid from the tap, so think about whether to take such a risk.
You can go to another house, and get running water there.
In addition to thawed, spring, rain and distilled water, it is advisable to pour 30% of the water from the old aquarium to the infused liquid from the tap. If he was kept safely, the fish and plants did not hurt there, the water in him was not muddy – this is a find. In the old (residential) aquarium water, whether it has been poured from a tap for a long time, there are many useful microbacteria that will create in the new dwelling the natural biological environment.
In a residential aquarium environment contains a number of organic impurities that are very useful for the aquatic environment. They make the water more acidic, do not allow the putrefactive and pathogenic bacteria to multiply.
If high-quality and proven water is poured into the tank, all its inhabitants can be healthy.
Many people who decide to start an aquarium want to know all the details about keeping fish, choosing plants and caring for water. But the first dilemma faced by an inexperienced aquarist is how much water should be poured into the aquarium?
There are a number of requirements for water quality and several ways to clean it, which will help to achieve the desired consistency.
For the aquarium should be selected soft neutral water. In large metropolitan areas such water flows in the aqueducts. In places where the water supply is connected to artesian wells, the water turns out to be too hard.
It is suitable only for viviparous fish, adapted to all sorts of adversity.
Too hard aquarium water can be softened by mixing it with soft distilled or rainwater. Water from melting snow / ice is also suitable. And collect rainwater and ice after continuous, long-term precipitation.
To replace the water in the aquarium, you can mix 1/4 of rainwater.
If you decide to use tap water, then follow these guidelines:
- Do not pour water from the tap. Pour it into the jar, you can see that its walls will be covered with bubbles. These are gases. They got into the liquid when it was passed through cleaning filters. Having put a small fish in such water, you risk that its body and gills will be covered with bubbles, and ulcers will form on the affected areas.
- Ensure that the water is free of chlorine.. If the water contains more than 0.1 milligrams of chlorine, the young fish and larvae will die in a couple of hours. A concentration of 0.05 milligrams of water will kill fish eggs.
- Monitor pH. Changes in the pH level are often observed in an artificial pond with soft water and low carbonate content, with strong sunlight. To remove the free acid, you need to blow the water column with air and deliver the water to the aquarium in batches, and the pH should not be less than 7.
If you follow these indicators of water in the aquarium, then it will not be green for a long time, and the fish and plants will fully develop.
Little just prepare the water and pour it into the aquarium. Her follow-up care is required. which involves filtering and ozonation. The most common filter types are:
- Internal. The most budget, and therefore a common option. It is a pump that distills the liquid through a foam sponge filtering composition.
- External. They are often bought for large volumes. They do not take up extra space inside the aquarium and have large volumes of filter materials. Sterilizers are also installed on the external filter.
As you can see, collecting water for the aquarium and its further control is a simple process.

Water for aquariums never boil. This action (boiling) destroys the living composition of its water; it is only necessary to defend the 1st day better than the 2nd.
But the stones brought from the walls, from the river must be boiled before putting them in the aquarium. If any questions are always welcome.
Deputy on specials
If the aquarium is new, pour raw water into it, let it stand for a day, then add a little salt, potassium permanganate, so that the water turns pink and you can run the fish. If you do not want extra trouble, then the aquarium should be at least 100 liters, equipped with equipment according to the displacement: heater, compressor, filter (on the packages of equipment indicated for what volume of water) and of course the light (also according to the volume of water, and necessarily – combined) otherwise the plants will grow poorly. When cleaning the aquarium, in no case, you can not completely change the water.
It is allowed to replace the water without settling at the rate of 1/4 of the volume of the aquarium. GOOD LUCK.
