Aquarium: do-it-yourself design. Styles and design options aquarium
Nowadays, a beautiful and fashionable design of an aquarium for a person engaged in keeping and breeding fish is not just entertainment, but a matter of prestige and simply aesthetic pleasure from contemplating the results of his labors.
Psychologists say that an aquarium with fish in an apartment can calm nerves and normalize a person’s mental state. To do this, simply organize a recreation area with an aquarium and watch the fish for at least 30-60 minutes. in a day.
The most fascinating and laborious task for all of us in the process of installing and filling the aquarium tank is its correct and beautiful design in the same style with the design of the room.
To date, there are a huge number of accessories that can be placed in the aquarium. Making your own hands will allow you to recreate as precisely as possible the exact setting that you want to see there.
Just do not forget that the main inhabitants of the aquarium are fish. And they need the maximum amount of free space in order to be able to swim freely.
The main components that allow for the design of the aquarium (200 liters and all others) are:
- natural and artificial algae;
- various wooden elements;
- artificial decorative elements such as locks, chests, etc.
When designing an aquarium with the help of decorative elements, it is necessary to remember that they must be environmentally friendly and have no harmful impurities, and in no case can they be supersaturated with an aquarium.
You can use both purchased and self-made decor.
Aquarium decoration with the right background
The so-called background is an important element of the decor of the aquarium. Since the background coverage sets the mood for all your offspring, it is not necessary to choose dark and dark tones that bear the spirit of despondency and sadness.
There are several options for the background for aquariums:
- You can simply paint the back wall of the tank in the color you chose beforehand. This path has its pros and cons. Indisputable advantage can be called the originality and 100 percent originality of your child. The list of minuses includes certain difficulties with changing the already existing background (removing it with a solvent).
- The background is in the form of a colored plastic film, having an unlimited number of different variation solutions, among which everyone can choose the most suitable one for him. In addition, the price of such a film will be practically imperceptible for your pocket, and it can also be installed or removed very quickly.
- Panel and diorama in the aquarium. Making your own hands in this case is an ideal option, since these parts can not only be purchased at the store, but also be made by yourself using the following materials at hand: small pebbles, snags and branches, foam plastic and mounting foam. But we must not forget about the environmental cleanliness and natural origin of the selected materials, so as not to harm the fish. Such decorative elements will always be unique.
Registration of an aquarium by different types of plants: live or artificial
To make the design of the aquarium with your own hands, you need to know some rules for the placement of parts.
- Avoid symmetry – it gives an aquascape too structured and tidy. There are no symmetrical forms in the natural environment, and you must imitate the environment. There are even algal growths and some dirt on natural rocks and vegetation. Asymmetric shapes are the key to creating beautiful designs.
- The focus should not be focused in the middle of the aquarium, but slightly away from its center. Using the golden section (a coefficient that has long been accepted as mathematically aesthetic), the optimal coordination center should be about 1: 1.62 the length of the aquarium.
After buying an aquarium, the first question is how to decorate the aquarium. To create a stunning design you need imagination, careful planning, diligence and, of course, the desire to create a miracle. I will give examples of the design of aquariums, talk about styles, materials and give useful tips that can help you in the future.
I wish your beautifully decorated aquarium became the center of attention!
Earlier, in the period of the beginning of aquarism, there was no suitable equipment and specific information about the design of the aquarium. Most kept their fish in ordinary jars, not even dreaming of more. But time passed and everything changed.
The world of modern technology has brought automation and new trends in fashion. There was a whole direction in the design of aquariums, called aquascape.
Now in the tank you can recreate any natural environment, landscape, even be fantastic. It all depends on the idea and the right material.
Pet shops dazzle with an abundance and a variety of artificial plants for an aquarium. Here you can buy everything.
By biological properties, artificial plants, of course, are inferior to natural ones. But with the help of them, a beginner can quite quickly and originally decorate an aquarium. In addition, artificial plants have many advantages:
- quickly and easily cleaned from algae;
- will never be eaten by denizens;
- always look new;
- tolerant to the composition of water.
You can combine artificial and natural plants. So you will visually expand, enrich the landscape, make it brighter in perception, and at the same time you will maintain biological balance in the aquarium.
To the decorative design of the background proceed first. This is usually the back wall. Two side walls can also be decorated.
It all depends on the wishes and initial ideas.
To create the background, you can use sheet backgrounds printed on a strong film. Photowall-paper of different themes, colors, shades are sold by the meter of different widths.
It is better to take with a margin of several centimeters.
Fasten, as a rule, from the outside. If a thin base, you can simply moisten with water and carefully level. If you plan to frequently change the background, it is better to use scotch.
If desired, the wallpaper for the aquarium can be glued on the inside with a special sealant designed for this. But here there are certain inconveniences – the film, no matter how you stick it tightly, will be peeled off in water.
It is possible to add volume to the back wall using the embossed background. Recently, he has gained great popularity.
The price for it is quite high, but still it is in considerable demand among aquarists. Mounted inside the aquarium with silicone glue.
As a background, you can lay stones or put cork tiles.
The easiest way is to paint. And you can any.
As you paint the outside of the aquarium, it will in no way affect the quality of the water and the health of the fish. But this method has its drawback.
If you decide to remake something in the background design, then after painting it will be more difficult.
What else you need to know about the aquarium:

Quite a significant element in decorating an aquarium are stones. They not only decorate, hide the installed technical means from prying eyes, but also serve as a shelter and substrate for some fledgling fishes.
For aquariums suitable such stones: granite, basalt, gneiss, porphyry. In the design is better not to use dolomite, limestone, sandstone.
They are only suitable for hard water aquariums. Good samples of stones can be found on the shores of lakes, rivers.
Before laying the stones should be thoroughly washed, boiled. Be sure to check for lime and metallic inclusions. To check the stone, it is enough to drop vinegar on it.
If you hiss, then the composition has calcium carbonate contained in limestone. After checking the stones are thoroughly washed again.
If you do not have the time and desire to mess with the processing of stones, you can buy them at the pet store.
Do not place stones with sharp edges in the aquarium. This can cause your fish to get hurt.
All large stones, structures put on the bottom before falling asleep ground. To avoid damage to the bottom, it is recommended to lay plastic sheets under large stones.
Large decorative elements are best placed on the back or side. Do not put in the center of the cobblestone, which will only select the precious area.
Resistance to vertical stone slabs can be imparted with silicone rubber glue.
If the stones are small, they can be put on the ground itself. But it should be remembered that the fish, undermining the ground, can be crushed by this stone. Basically, this kind of decor is placed close to the walls of the aquarium or at a distance sufficient from them, so that the inhabitants of the aquarium do not get stuck.
With the help of a sealant from stones, you can create various step-by-step compositions, fancy caves.
River and seashells, of course, look natural and beautiful. But before you put them in the aquarium, they need to be processed.
Small shells are thoroughly washed with water, and large shells boil for at least 30 minutes. No need to put in the aquarium shell, treated with varnish or other protective material. To avoid injury to fish, it is better not to choose specimens with sharp edges.
Remember that shells and corals increase the hardness of the water.
If you are going to acquire cichlids, then for an aquarium with such pets you should choose suitable decorative elements. Aquarium decorations for a cichlid tank should be durable, as these large fish can dig them up, even destroy them.
Also, fish need a substrate for spawning, on which they lay their eggs. Decorative elements that will be needed for the aquarium:
- Stones or gravel of medium size;
- Large stones;
- Flat stones;
- Aquatic plants;
- Other decorations are snags, caves, grottoes.
What decorative items to choose for their cichlids?
Estimate the size of your cichlids. These fish have common behavioral traits, such as territoriality and the ability to dig for soil, digging up plants. Consider how much your cichlids live in, the choice of decor and equipment also depends on it.
Large cichlids such as Tiger Oscars need a wide swimming space, they can move objects in the aquarium.
Poorly designed tank, where there is aquarium decorations in the form of massive stones or caves – ideal for large fish. African cichlids are friendly and need fewer hiding places from rocks and plants.
Dwarf cichlids require more caches where you can hide. Cichlid fry also need a lot of gorges to save their lives.
Cichlids from Central America can be aggressive towards aquarium neighbors, so an aquascape with a large number of shelters will ensure the safety of all pets.

The bottom of the tank should consist of a suitable substrate. Aquarium pebbles or medium gravel are ideal for cichlids because they often dig in the ground for food.
Aquarium rocks as decorations will provide a similarity of the natural biotope, since many cichlids come from lakes with a rocky bottom.
Recommendations for the preparation of the decor:
- Use aquarium silicone for mounting rocks and decorations. This material is safe for the health of fish, does not emit toxic substances.
- If you want the cichlids to multiply well, there should be enough secluded places in the aquarium. These fish need a personal space. During spawning, they become territorial and aggressive, protecting their fry.
- Do not use fine sand and small stones for the cichlid. Fish will be able to swallow such parts, which will lead to problems with digestion.
- Never wash stones with strong chemicals and bleach. Even a minimal amount of aggressive detergents can cause the death of pets.
Aquarium decorations must be safe for fish. Some substances released from stones or wood can poison water.
Buy decorations from good sellers. Do not install small, lightweight decorative elements in the tsikhlidnik, otherwise the fish will quickly rearrange or destroy them, perhaps even swallow them.
Do not select the soil in the form of fine sand, otherwise suspended particles will create turbidity in the water.
Construct all kinds of grottoes and rocks can be of sandstone, tuff, limestone, “cheesestone”. Malawian cichlids love rakushnyak very much – they spend a lot of time in cave-houses of this material, there they also breed their offspring.
To install massive rocky rocks, you need an aquarium of at least 250 liters. Before installing the stones in the tank, they should not be treated with soap, chlorine and detergents. It is better to thoroughly rinse the rocks under running water and treat with boiling water.
Carefully remove trash that has collected on the rock during transportation.

Use decorations for ceramics cichlid. This material is made of chamotte clay.
This is an environmentally friendly product that is safe for fish and plants. Chamotte clay looks natural, so it will be nice for pets to be in it. Ceramic products are made independently or under the order.
The material is plastic, with its help, grottoes, rocks, snags, houses are molded. In such decorations, cichlids can rest, be alone, or multiply. Ceramic tsikhlidnik has several cell-rooms for each fish.
They are separated by partitions along and across, have a hole in the form of the entrance. This is a kind of “apartment” house.
Use caution when handling aquatic plants. Large cichlids can remove small plants almost immediately after you add them to the aquarium.
Ferns and arrowheads are a good choice because they have strong stems. If you live dwarf varieties of cichlids, then the likelihood that the plants will be destroyed, is reduced to a minimum.
Plant the bushes of plants at the rear and side walls of the aquarium, or in pots. Plants should tolerate a pH of water of 5.5-7.0. Perfect plant species for cichlid are:
- Anubias Nana;
- Dwarf sagittria;
- Bolbitis gedeloti.
Do not forget to put flat stones on the bottom, on which the female will lay eggs. Breeds with a smooth surface can be hidden in the corner of an aquascape, where fish love to spawn.
Before breeding, producers themselves grind the surface of the substrate.
