Dear colleagues. In today’s material, I would like to touch on one very important topic that does not give rest to many aquarists. Very often, you can hear the words of outrage from aquarists against brazen public utilities.
They not only cut off the electricity for a long time, but also without any warnings. It would seem that we all live in civilized countries, but such a bad attack haunts us throughout the post-Soviet space.
The causes of power outages can be a huge variety: overloading the grid, scheduled work, and so on. But this is no easier for us because the repair work can last several hours.
And it will badly affect our aquariums, and it is equally bad both for the whole ecosystem and for aquarium equipment.
In addition to the power outage in our power grids, there may be other problems that can lead to a malfunction of the aquarium equipment. These problems include:
- Pulsed high voltage noise;
- The complete absence of voltage in the mains;
- Surges and drawdowns of a long and short-term nature;
- High-frequency interference that can be transmitted through the mains;
- Current frequency fluctuations by more than 3 units.
If there are no problems with the protection of the aquarium from voltage surges, then there may be problems with a complete outage. To protect equipment from power surges, you can install a surge protector, or the so-called “Pilot”, which is installed together with any desktop PC.

Much worse when the electricity is turned off for a long time. The fact is that in non-working aquarium filters begin to massively die colonies of beneficial bacteria, which are directly involved in the formation of biological equilibrium.
In fact, water stops replenishing oxygen. If the aquarium filter did not work for a long time, when it is turned on, the decay products of these very bacteria will massively fall into the aquarium, which can cause mass death of aquarium inhabitants.
To avoid such situations, it is advisable to connect the aquarium equipment to any uninterruptible power supply. These devices are capable of supporting the operation of all aquarium equipment for several hours thanks to the built-in battery.

You can purchase such a power supply at any large store selling computers and accessories. If your aquarium is medium in size, then a power source with a capacity of 1000 to 1500 VA will suffice.

For reef aquariums and large herbalists, where the number of important equipment just rolls over, it is better to use devices that are able to maintain the performance of all devices for a long time. Accordingly, for such a task we will have to select more powerful UPSs, which are now widely used in autonomous power supply systems, security systems, and so on.
Such devices have great power, differ in size and price policy. The price range of such UPS ranges from $ 500 to several thousand. But such systems have one significant advantage – the duration of work can reach 12 or more hours.
