How to make the “sea” water for the aquarium

To maintain a marine or reef aquarium, it is not necessary to live near the sea. Modern technologies allow making seawater at home.

Knowing the 2 basic rules of water preparation, you can safely get the inhabitants of the sea, even in small home aquariums.

A full-fledged marine aquarium can be maintained at home.

The fact that sea water is salty, is known to all. Therefore, the main ingredient for making sea water at home is salt.

But not the usual cooking, cosmetic or technical. Special salt for a marine aquarium is required.

You can buy it at a pet store or via the Internet.

The following salt options are on sale:

  • Red Sea – natural sea salt, is made by evaporation from the water of the Red Sea. It is a pure salt without additives. Sold in packs of 4 kg, 7 kg buckets and bags of 10, 22, 25, 40, 500 kg.
  • Red Sea Coral Pro – this salt has an increased alkalinity level. It helps to enhance the growth of corals. Packing manufacturer – from 4 to 500 kg. Large pet stores often offer customers to buy salt by weight, it turns out cheaper than buying factory packaging.

  • Tropic Marine is a synthetic salt enriched with trace elements necessary to create an optimal environment for aquatic organisms. The Pro Reef variety contains an increased amount of calcium and magnesium for accelerated growth of corals, and Bio-Actif is an improved composition for the growth of aquarium inhabitants – fish reproduce more actively and corals get a bright color. Sold in packages ranging in size from 1.8 to 25 kg.
  • Prime – natural salt from the water of the Mediterranean. Available in 2 versions for marine (blue label) and reef (green label) aquariums. Supplied in bulk packaging and buckets – from 10 to 25 kg.
  • Blue Treasure – synthetic salt, enriched with trace elements. There are separate types of SPS (for the most demanding inhabitants of aquariums), Reef Sea Salt (additionally purified, with a high content of calcium, magnesium, iodine). The product can be purchased in packages from 6 to 25 kg.

Popular brand of sea salt for aquarium

How much sea salt to purchase directly depends on the volume of the tank for the maintenance of marine life. On average, it is necessary to proceed from the proportion of 35 g of salt per 1 liter of water.

The second key point that needs to be taken into account when preparing a marine aquarium is water purification. The use of ordinary tap water is highly undesirable.

Even after the final settling, it contains harmful impurities that can have a detrimental effect on fish and corals.

Distilled water can be used, but has a significant drawback – domestic distillers consume a lot of electricity, and therefore this method of water purification is expensive for the aquarist.

In order to independently make seawater at home, it is better to use a reverse osmosis system. The usual household filter is quite enough to clean the aquarium water. To check the content of harmful impurities in the water after cleaning, you need to use the TDS meter.

To carry out additional manipulations with water after osmosis cleaning is not necessary, you can begin to mix the ingredients.

To prepare sea water, you need to bring the temperature of the liquid to 25 ˚C. This is the optimal rate at which sea salt dissolves.

If the temperature of the liquid is higher or lower, it will not be possible to obtain a liquid with the required composition.

Water parameters for a marine aquarium – salinity – 35 ppm, density – 1,023-1,024 g / l.

How to prepare sea water, indicates the manufacturer on the package. Scheme and dosage may vary slightly.

In addition to salt and water, you will need a container for mixing the ingredients. Suitable bucket, canister, plastic bottle for food.

It is forbidden to cook sea water in metal containers.

  • Calculate the required amount of sea salt based on the proportion of 35 g per liter of water in the aquarium. Mix the full weight of salt with 1/3 of water, and then gradually add purified water, periodically measuring the salinity and density with a refractometer and hydrometer until a solution with the required parameters is obtained.

  • Dissolve the full weight of sea salt in the full volume of water. Measure salinity and density. If necessary, add salt or osmotic water.

After obtaining a saline solution with the necessary parameters, you need to wait about 24 hours for the ingredients to completely dissolve in the liquid. Only after this aquarium water can be used for its intended purpose.

Sea water has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-edema action. It is actively used in the treatment of diseases of the upper respiratory tract caused by bacterial infections.

Sea salt treats for antritis

After application of the drug in patients, there is a decrease in the amount of mucus produced, its liquefaction, a decrease in the number of pathogenic bacteria, and an acceleration of the regeneration processes.

Pharmaceuticals offers a large selection of saline solutions for washing the nose. In addition, the medicine can be prepared at home.

But it is important to use not the usual kitchen salt, but purified, purchased in a pharmacy. 1-2 teaspoons of salt and a few drops of iodine are added to a glass of water.

Sea salt is also used for bathing. Such procedures help to strengthen the immune system, increase skin elasticity, accelerate wound healing.
