How to make a grotto for aquarium do it yourself

In the aquarium where the fish live, the scenery plays an important role. In addition to plants, you can add decorative elements to it: the mock of a sunken ship, stones, shells and bright colorful algae. There is a decor, which is also functional, for example, in the caves of the fish can hide from the restless fellows.

To design was original and unique, you can make a grotto for an aquarium with your own hands.

If it was decided to do the decoration yourself, then first of all you need to pay attention to the materials. They must be safe and not change the aquatic environment, because many fish react very painfully not only to temperature, but also to acidity, hardness and chemical composition of water. Here are the basic rules:

  • Materials containing lime cannot be used. It increases the acidity of water and makes it unsuitable for many fish. Do not use cement for the same reason.
  • Materials with high iron content are also extremely undesirable.
  • It’s a bad idea to use stones from industrial areas or selected near businesses, busy roads and landfills. They may contain traces of heavy substances that will not grow even after boiling.
  • There should be no sharp corners and edges, because the fish can get hurt. Even a small hole with sharp edges can hurt if the fish do not calculate their strength and try to squeeze into it.
  • If the parts are wooden, then it is worth knowing in advance about the wood species: some may emit harmful substances into the water, for example, oak.
  • As a glue, you can use only a special sealant for aquariums, the rest contain harmful substances that spoil the water.

Before the construction of the stones and other materials from which the building will be constructed, you need to boil. This kills most of the harmful bacteria of the fish.

Boil for at least 10 minutes, burst stones after that can not be used.

It is also important to determine the size of the cave: it directly depends on the size of the inhabitants of the aquarium. Inside the grotto there should be enough space so that the fish could turn around and not get stuck in it, or the entrances should be cross-cutting.

The easiest option – to make for the aquarium with his own hands a cave of stones. Suitable flat river pebbles.

You just need to glue the stones in random order, to get a small hemisphere. For convenience, you can put something down, for example, a toilet paper sleeve.

It will serve as a frame that will keep the stones in the right shape before the glue dries. It takes about a day.

The main difficulty here is that you need to glue the first layer of stones right to the bottom of the aquarium, because the cave must stand still under water, otherwise it will simply fall apart. If the stones are heavy enough, then you can not do so.

It should be borne in mind that the bottom will still be covered with a layer of soil, so the entrance must be either located above the level of the soil, or be large enough so that the fish can swim inside.

For reliability, you can put a grotto in an aquarium without fish for several days, periodically changing the water. This will help clean up residues of harmful substances from materials and check the strength of the structure.

There is another way, but it will require the use of a drill. It will take a suitable size stone to drill a fish cave in it.

The advantage of this option is that it is not necessary to glue it to the bottom, there is nothing to collapse there even when moving. But there are also disadvantages – we need minimum skills for working with drills, a properly selected stone (not only in size, but also in material, because not everyone can be drilled out just like that) and great patience.

Noise and dust during operation will be very much.

The wooden craft version is also quite good, but it is more complicated. First you need to choose a small stump or snag with no signs of decay, clean the bark and drill holes in it for fish.

One large or many small – depends on the design. You can even drill curly.

Then you need to polish the edges so that the fish do not hurt yourself. This should be done over the entire depth of the hole. Then burn the tree with a gas torch or a blowtorch, so as not to set it on fire, you need to know how to do it correctly.

So that from the slightest movement of water the wooden grotto does not begin to swim, it is glued to the base and sprinkled with soil.

An excellent grotto can be made from a glass bottle. The volume is selected depending on the size of pets, then the bottle should be thoroughly washed with hot water. After that, it will have to be cut, it is done this way:

  • First, you need to prepare a container with cold water (the colder, the better), a stern thread, some gasoline and matches or a lighter, fine sandpaper.
  • The thread is moistened in gasoline and wrapped around the bottle in the right place. You can arrange it tilted, it all depends on the imagination. Then set on fire.
  • Immediately after the thread is burned, lower the bottle into cold water. Exactly at the place where the thread was, due to the temperature difference the bottle will crack.
  • It will only be necessary to process the edges with a file or sandpaper so that they are not sharp, but rounded.

In general, after this, the glass grotto is ready. But to make it look beautiful and original, you can glue decorative elements.

As an option – to coat the outer edges of the bottle with aquarium glue, and sprinkle coarse sand, small pebbles, shells, algae and everything else that comes to mind from above. To dry the finished product should not less than a day.

In the aquarium, it will be necessary to sprinkle the construction a little with primer so that it does not roll.

If possible, you can make a red clay grotto. This method is the most laborious of all, because clay needs to be burned, otherwise the product will simply break.

So, first you need to blind the cave of a suitable form. For example, in the form of a pot with a broken side or just a rectangular house.

To make it spherical, you can use a balloon: inflate it to the desired size, coat it with a layer of clay (not too thin), let it dry and gently blow off the ball, trying not to crush the edges of the clay sphere.

Then the product must be dried. This can be done in the sun or in the microwave. After this, roasting is required.

If there is a workshop with a muffle furnace nearby, then you can turn to it. If not, you will have to use the oven, heated to 220 degrees. It is better to leave the door ajar.

Roasting takes about an hour, then gradually, the temperature decreases within 15–20 minutes. If you turn off the oven immediately, the clay will become fragile.

After firing, you can put the product to the fish. If it was decided to paint it, then you need to make sure that the paints are not toxic and will not poison the water.

Purchased shards, it is desirable to also burn in addition to kill germs.

Perhaps the easiest way is to make a coconut cave. You need to buy fresh fruit, drain the milk from it, clean the flesh and make the entrances. Hair can be left.

New house is desirable to boil.

Another simple way is to take a plastic bottle, trim the neck, coat it with aquarium glue and roll in sand or pebbles. Particular attention should be paid to the edges.

To make it stable, you need to glue heavy pebbles along the edges or fall asleep a little straight inwards. This option is especially good when you need to quickly make a house.

However, it should be remembered that the glue must be completely dry before dipping the craft in water.

Thus, to make aquarium grottoes with their own hands is a snap. It is only important to find environmentally friendly materials and connect the imagination.
