Snags in an aquarium serve not only as a means of decoration, but also as a shelter for some species of fish, as a place for laying eggs or simply as a mount for various structures. For an aquarium it is necessary to use a dead wood log as wood sap pollutes the water in the tank.
The best option is the roots, which for a long time were in fresh water.
The roots and branches of willow, alder, ash, beech and maple are also suitable for self-manufacturing aquarium snags. Do not use pieces of wood that are covered with mold or rotten.
It is not recommended to take a tree from reservoirs into which technical wastes are dumped, as well as coniferous trees.
Snags from coniferous trees contain a large amount of resin, which even after prolonged treatment and boiling remain in the wood, so they will change the color and composition of your water in the aquarium.
Previously, most aquarium enthusiasts used only koryazhnik, since it was the only kind of tree that was supplied specifically for breeding fish. Today, the variety of wood has expanded significantly, because from abroad they began to bring better and higher-quality varieties of wood, for example, swamp oak, which absorbs moisture well and also lends itself to processing.
In addition, pet stores have a large selection of ready-made kryag from various types of wood, even mahogany. Most of these handicrafts have a very large weight, so there is no need for impregnation with water, they themselves drown perfectly.
Despite good processing, such crafts are still recommended to be cleaned of dirt and dust, and also to be treated with boiling water in order to kill all the bacteria.
Processing snags takes place in several stages:
Before placing a snag made with your own hands or bought in a pet shop in an aquarium, it is necessary to soak it in tap water for a long time until it starts to sink, for this, take a large dish that fits your snag at least half and press it down with something heavy so that it does not float, periodically we turn the snag to evenly find its parts in the water, if it does not fit entirely into the dishes. If wood paints water – then soaking can drag on for several days, or even weeks, while changing the water is necessary every day.
It is necessary that all dyes come out of the snags.
After the snag absorbs a sufficient amount of water and begins to sink in the water – it must be boiled. Boil snag for an aquarium is necessary during the day, you can intermittently, the point of boiling is to kill all the harmful fungi and microorganisms inside the tree that can get into the aquarium and ruin your life.
After processing the snags by the method described above, it can be placed in an aquarium.
This treatment must be performed for all pieces of wood that you will put in the aquarium. The snag for an aquarium should not contain mold and rot, and also it must be thoroughly cleaned of dirt and bark.
Otherwise, it will pollute the water in the tank, and you will have to clean it much more often.
The most popular mangrove snags are brought from abroad, because there they grow constantly in the water, most often on the seashore. They are already adapted to life in water, and therefore do not require a long process of treatment.
Before you put such a snag in an aquarium, you must soak it thoroughly, otherwise it will not sink. There are a large number of pores in its structure, so it may take several days to fill them with water.
Do not put the roots on the bottom on top of ordinary soil, otherwise you will have departments in which dirt will accumulate intensively.
The branches of Koryazhnik perform not only a decorative function. Thanks to the substances they contain in an aquarium, it is possible to maintain a certain level of acidity.
In addition, fish are constantly used for laying eggs or as a refuge.
Roots located at the bottom, can not perform the function of shelter, but only create an ecosystem of the aquarium, which looks great. It seems that the roots grow from the very walls of the aquarium, so the entire design of the tank looks quite natural.
The location of the roots and drifts depends entirely on the desire and imagination of the owner of the aquarium. You can place them as you like, as long as you like the appearance of the aquarium, and the fish do not create additional obstacles to a quiet life.
If you want to use bamboo or reed as a piece of interior for your tank, then before placing it you need to treat it with a solution of potassium permanganate or hydrogen peroxide. The ends of the tubes should be sealed with polyethylene or paraffin, because otherwise they can simply fall apart.
