The main types of professional aquarium compressors
Manufacturers of different countries have developed a wide variety of aquarium air pumps that can satisfy any owner of ornamental fish. Structurally, these devices can be divided into 2 main types:
Piston professional compressors are more powerful and are designed for aeration in large-capacity aquariums, over 200 liters, for example. At the same time they are the most noisy, since the movement of the piston is always accompanied by a rather loud sound.
Membrane Air pumps are almost noiseless, their work is based on the movement of a rubber membrane that pumps air into the outlet tube.
Compressors differ in the type of power source: either from a household electrical network or from batteries. There are also external and internal devices, if we consider the method of installation.
The price range of these technical devices is also quite wide – from several hundred to 20 thousand rubles (for example, the Italian pump Sicce MULTI), depending on the design, equipment, power and other characteristics.
If the aquarium is small and there is no pet shop nearby, then for the first time a homemade air pump will help to save the situation.
Such a device can be assembled, if you understand the basic principle: first you need to somehow accumulate air, and then gradually submit it to the aquarium. This is the fundamental difference between an improvised unit and commercial piston or diaphragm pumps operating from an electric motor.
But how can you accumulate air? The answer suggests itself: in a balloon, car chamber, soccer ball camera, etc. By the way, it is the inflatable ball that some homemade craftsmen use in such cases.
So, in order to quickly and without special difficulties to assemble an aquarium compressor, you need:
- rubber chamber (like an air battery);
- car (or bicycle) pedal or hand pump;
- three-way faucet (tee);
- plastic tube from a medical dropper with a clip.
Three tubes should be taken from the tee: the first to the hand pump, the second to the inflatable ball, and the third tube (a dropper hose with a clip) will be the output hose. The end of this hose must be firmly plugged, and in front of it a tube must be punctured with several small holes, from which air will flow.
Of course, all connections must be reliable and tight.
To collect air using a tee, the pump-chamber line opens first. The ball chamber is very durable in itself, so you can pump it up to failure. Then this direction is blocked and the “camera-outlet tube” line is turned on.
In order for the air to enter the aquarium gradually, the diameter of the outlet tube in one place is regulated by means of a clamp. Naturally, this clip should be outside the aquarium, closer to the tee.
Experienced way selects the flow rate of the air flow.
In principle, a homemade compressor is ready. The disadvantage of such a device is that the battery chamber must be periodically pumped. As a rule, for normal aeration of an aquarium with a capacity of up to 100 liters, such pumping should be carried out 2 times a day.
Consequently, a homemade compressor can not be left unattended for a long time.
Before you start making a compressor device for an aquarium, you need to be well aware of why your fish need it. Its main function is to oxygenate water.
In addition, the bubbles rise to the upper layers and seem to form some kind of elevator, causing the surrounding fluid layers to move upwards. Water is thus additionally stirred, and its temperature becomes more uniform.
Bursting on the surface, the bubbles break off the film of bacteria and dust, thereby slightly improving overall aeration. Even from a decorative point of view, an aquarium with a working compressor looks better than without it.
The bubble chain represents an entertaining and pacifying spectacle that always attracts the viewer.
- For work, we need a conventional car or bicycle pump.
- A tube from a medical dropper.
- Tee or three-way valve.
- Self-made clamp or device for clamping the dropper, you need to adjust the air pressure.
- As an accumulator of oxygen, we will have:
- bike or car camera;
- football, basketball or other ball.
- We assemble the construction as shown in the figure. The outlet is sealed, and the surface of the hose at the end is often pierced with a needle. We pump up our “accumulator”, shut off the hose from the pump and adjust the air pressure.
This compressor for the aquarium, assembled with your own hands, will need to be pumped up about twice a day. It should be noted that the ball chamber enclosed in a leather shell will withstand greater air pressure, and therefore this device will work longer without paging.
Of course, it is inconvenient to use this device for years, and it will not be possible to leave it for several days without supervision, but this homemade compressor is quite suitable as a temporary fixture.

This, as you understand, requires additional power from the compressor and additional performance. More powerful compressors must be purchased in those cases, if the aquarium is high. Here the compressor will need to overcome the water pressure.
In addition, the compressor power depends on the diffuser. The smaller the holes, the more pressure must be created by the compressor.
