In most cases, any aquarium is a closed lid tank. It is hampered by the natural penetration of air from the atmosphere.
In addition, every day we make small changes in the internal environment of the aquarium – we throw food to the fish, while the waste products remain there. Based on this, we conclude that in any aquarium, for a normal and healthy life of its inhabitants, it is necessary to establish mechanical filtration and aeration of water (enrichment of water with oxygen).
Aeration is necessary for the enrichment of water with oxygen. A standard aerator consists of an electric pump in which air is injected, a hose and a sprayer. In order for the air to be well dissolved in water, the aerator sprayer must produce very small bubbles.
The smaller the bubbles, the better they dissolve in water. it is better aerated, since the area of contact of oxygen with water increases per unit volume.
But oxygen enters the aquarium not only by aerating water, a very large part of the air dissolves through the upper layers of water, so in an aquarium whose surface area is larger, it can dissolve a larger volume of oxygen. But it is not enough that the air simply dissolves in the upper layers – it must also fall into the lower layers – therefore, the water must be constantly stirred.
When mixing layers of water is created by air bubbles from the aerator – this is called an airlift.
We concluded that not only the small size of the bubbles serves as an indicator of the good performance of the aerator, but also their high flow rate, which can mix water in the aquarium. Naturally, aerator sprayers, which give small bubble size, create tremendous resistance, and in order to increase the volume of oxygen that is driven through water, a higher-capacity compressor is needed.
Remember the main thing – aeration of water and its saturation with oxygen is never superfluous, even if you have a large number of plants and a small number of fish in your tank.
The purpose of the filter in the aquarium is to maintain the purity of the water and catch the waste products of the inhabitants of the aquarium by mechanically filtering it through various materials. Filtration of water is a very important process, because thanks to it there is no accumulation of organic matter in the aquarium, which, when decomposed, increases the amount of ammonia that is poisonous to fish, and also prevents the appearance of many types of simple algae.
Filter power is selected depending on the volume of the aquarium. Currently, all manufacturers indicate on the box with filters for what volume of the aquarium it is intended, which greatly facilitates the selection of the right one for you.
Filtering will be useful not only in overcrowded aquariums, but also where there is a very small number of fish.
In addition to its direct function to purify water from organics, the filter also intensively mixes its upper and lower layers, which has a beneficial effect on its saturation with oxygen. If a heater is installed in your aquarium, then the filter will be simply necessary, it will promote mixing of water and equalizing the temperature in the upper and lower layers.
On sale at the moment there are combined filters with aerators. Having bought such a filter aerator you will save money, reduce the number of wires and thereby improve the appearance of your aquarium.
In the future we will talk about the types of filters currently available, as well as their fillers and filter elements.
