More and more people are keen on aquarism, this interesting and informative lesson will give you a lot of pleasure. But in order for the inhabitants of the aquarium to please their owner with a healthy and radiant look, they need to be cared for. One of the most important aspects of keeping fish is, of course, food.
Under normal conditions, mineral salts accumulate in the soil and water, so the fish do not have a lack of them, but they can only get other useful substances with food, so the food should be complete and proper. Competent selection and combination of feed improves the immunity of fish, improves their metabolism and makes the color more vivid and rich.
So what are the feed for aquarium fish?
Tablets, flakes, granules are all varieties of dry fish food. Most often there are flakes on sale – they are great for fish of different sizes, granules and tablets should be selected according to the size of the inhabitants of your aquarium. They contain very little moisture (up to 4%), so they are stored for a long time, less susceptible to the action of bacteria and mold.
In addition, it is easier for fish to eat such food – it is light and does not sink to the bottom as quickly as analogs with a pasty structure, which means there will be less dirt in the aquarium.
When purchasing dry food, it is very important to choose a truly nutritious and healthy product, and not a substitute with low nutritional value. Many manufacturers produce food for certain species of fish – catfish, cichlids, discus and others.
If the fish is a predator, the feed should include pieces of dried meat, sea fish and seafood, if the herbivore is useful plants. High-protein foods are used to grow fry.
In addition, feed can be floating – for species that float on the surface and sinking – for bottom fish. Also available for sale are freeze-dried foods, which, in addition to dry cereals and flakes, include organisms dried at low temperatures — most often this is a tubule of the Tubifex type and a bloodworm.
Packaging must be sealed, since many nutrients can be destroyed by moisture, heat and light.
Despite the fact that many species of fish can only eat dry food, it is worth diversifying their diet. Frozen food is a good alternative, because they are economical, easily stored in the freezer.
These feeds have undergone an industrial freezing process and additional gamma-ray treatment, therefore they do not contain pathogenic microorganisms that cause fish diseases. Therefore, offering your pet such food is much safer than feeding similar components in a live form.
After acquiring such feed, first select the required amount of the mixture and place it in a separate vessel so that it thaws. Only thawed feed can be given to fish, otherwise ice crystals contained in the feed can damage the thin intestinal walls of the fish.
Liquid content is immediately drained, because the inhabitants of the aquarium will still not be able to absorb it, and the organic matter deposited on the bottom simply pollutes the aquarium.
Live fish food, especially aquatic invertebrates, is a very important component of the diet of many species. For example, fish that feed on the surface, can eat such insects in large quantities, and for feeding the fry such food will have to be most welcome. Ground fishes feed on worms and crustaceans.
Of course, few aquarists can afford to catch invertebrates in their natural habitat, but the larvae of mosquitoes or small crustaceans can be purchased even in pet stores.
Such feeds have a lot of advantages: they contain a lot of vitamins, microelements and other nutrients, they have high nutritional value and do not undergo a process of processing, as a result of which the lion’s share of useful components is destroyed. In addition, do not forget about the instincts of fish: they are often more attracted by moving prey than fixed feed, especially for young fish.
Of course, there are also negative aspects of the use of live feed – this is the risk that they can become carriers of diseases or parasites. Pathogenic microorganisms may be present in the insides and tissues of invertebrates: for example, a tubule may be the carrier of the simplest parasites, and cyclops and crustaceans – helminths.
Live foods that are grown in open systems are more environmentally friendly, but with the naked eye it is simply impossible to distinguish these foods from their counterparts collected in the local river. So it is always worth remembering the possible risk and in case of uncertainty or doubt as to the quality of the feed, subject it to freezing.
Many people know that herbivorous fish adore algae, so the aquarium must be filled with vegetation. But for fish, and many types of food consumed by humans – lettuce, spinach, peas and other green vegetables.
Before offering such food to fish, it is necessary to process it – remove the hard skin, boil and grind. Spinach and lettuce must be blanched to destroy the fiber that is difficult for the fish to digest.
Also, fish can be fed with pieces of seafood and sea fish (in no way river, as it can also live harmful bacteria and parasites), beef liver or heart – most importantly, in moderation. Do not feed the inhabitants of the aquarium cheese, cookies, bread crumbs, poultry, because these products contain saturated fats that are harmful to fish.
