Features of strong aeration of water in a plant aquarium

Oxygen is vital for any living being. This also applies to aquarium inhabitants. Fans of this exotic know that for a comfortable life the fish need aeration in the aquarium in order to compensate for the lack of oxygen.

Unfortunately, not everyone is aware of its usefulness and necessity.

Aeration in the aquarium is needed to compensate for the lack of oxygen

Fish, like people, inhale oxygen, and exhale carbon dioxide. In the daytime, plants, as expected, produce oxygen.

And this process of photosynthesis occurs day after day. But sometimes there are situations when a failure occurs, and the inhabitants of the aquarium begins to lack air. This can happen for several reasons:

  • If there are too many living creatures, and there are few plants in the aquarium.
  • When the tank with water is small, and a lot of fish.
  • And also it is necessary to take into account the size of the fish – the larger the inhabitants, the more they lack oxygen.

All this indicates that aeration in a plant aquarium is a must. But even if it seems that the size of the tank corresponds to the number of fish and plants, this does not mean that aeration of water in the aquarium is not needed.

Besides the fact that aeration solves the main problem of lack of oxygen, This procedure can also help solve a number of other problems:

  • As a result of the circulation of water throughout the aquarium, the temperature levels off. And this helps to avoid significant drops.
  • Such a process creates an imitation of the natural conditions that some species of fish are simply necessary.
  • And also aeration helps to get rid of dust and bacterial film, which is formed with time on the surface.

Creating a gentle vortex flows helps to quickly get rid of carbon dioxide and prevents harmful substances such as methane and hydrogen sulfide from accumulating.

The saturation procedure is simple and does not take much time. There are several ways to saturate the aquarium with oxygen:

  • Natural. This method does not provide for the use of additional devices, you just need to add more plants and snails to the aquarium. It is especially useful to breed snails, since they not only have a beneficial effect on the amount of oxygen, but also are a kind of indicator. If the mollusks are on the rocks, then everything is fine with oxygen. But if its quantity decreases, then the snails crawl through the plants or on the walls of the container.
  • Artificial. Aeration takes place using special pumps or air compressors.

If you opt for artificial aeration, it should be remembered that after the compressor requires periodic maintenance, it will need to disassemble and clean the valve.

As you know, in the daytime, under the influence of light, plants produce oxygen. And at night with a lack of lighting, the plants not only cease to release oxygen, but vice versa actively consume it. In addition, if there are many plants and living creatures in the tank, it is likely that dead fish can be found by morning.

Therefore, it is not necessary to switch off the aquarium aeration device for the night, even though the compressors create a lot of noise. There are several ways to solve this problem:

  • You can place the compressor in a noise-absorbing box made of foam.
  • Move the device to the next room, where it will not interfere – for example, on the balcony or in the pantry.
  • Install foam rubber dampers.

In general, you can cope with noises without problems. In addition, you can connect the compressor through a step-down transformer.

Only it should be borne in mind that the performance of aeration will decrease significantly.

Not all aquarists, especially beginners, know all the subtleties of breeding fish. Therefore it is worth considering some secrets and tricks to help in this matter:

Strong aeration in an aquarium can lead to an excess of oxygen. This situation also has a bad effect on fish, which cause air bubbles in the blood.

This can also lead to their death. But such situations are much less common.

Strong aeration can lead to an excess of oxygen

  • An increase in water temperature leads to an increase in oxygen consumption, and vice versa. Therefore, this should be taken into account in the case of asphyxia.
  • At home aquarists should always have hydrogen peroxide. After all, not many people know how this thing is necessary. Meanwhile, peroxide is used to treat fish against bactericidal infections and parasites. It helps to get rid of unwanted organisms in the aquarium and fights with algae on plants. And the main thing that peroxide copes with is the revival of a choked fish. But we must not forget that before using this liquid you need to know how to use it correctly, otherwise you can cause significant harm to the fish.
