Features breeding meal worms at home

Every experienced angler knows that one of the most desirable treats for fish is mealworms. If you put such bait on the hook, then the fishing will be incredibly productive and rich.

Get worms for the upcoming fishing is easy. In addition, they can be self-diluted at home, which does not require much effort or cost.

Since ancient times, people bred worms for a variety of purposes. In addition to fishing, they can be used as feed for chickens.

The composition of such creatures contains a lot of protein and other nutrients necessary for the full development of poultry. In this regard, some poultry farmers are interested in the intricacies of breeding these arthropods at home.

However, not everyone agrees on such an “adventure”, because few people are willing to look at a bunch of fast, wriggling animals, and even more so to breed them. In turn, brave souls who are not afraid of such a spectacle successfully keep the worms in a small box and then use them for economic purposes.

In the biological description of the species, it is mentioned that they are a larva of a meal starch with a small size and a specific way of life. The creature was first discovered in the Mediterranean, from where it was brought to the European continent.

The beetle itself has a body length of 1–1.5 centimeters, and the size of the larvae is 3 cm. When choosing a source of food, animals do not show special requirements, but from the name one can guess their love for cereals and flour products.

The life cycle of worms consists of several stages:

  1. Laying eggs. The duration of the incubation period is 8-30 days.
  2. The stage of formation of larvae (this stage is of interest to farmers and poultry farmers). It takes about two to three months.
  3. Transformation of meal worms into pupae. The process is carried out within 8-18 days.
  4. Formation of a full-fledged beetle. The life span of this form reaches 1−4 months.

When breeding meal worms you need to be patient and attentive. It is important to feed animals to poultry in time, and also to leave several individuals for further reproduction.

In this case, the development of the colony will be productive.

Breeding a flour worm at home is a rather painstaking and lengthy process. To successfully equip a worm farm, you need to purchase special boxes with smooth walls in advance. For this purpose, conventional glass or plastic tanks are suitable, from which worms and beetles will not be able to get out.

Some farmers use aquariums with a capacity of 10 gallons (that is, about 37.8−45.4 liters), as well as all sorts of plastic containers.

In the lids of such containers should be openings for full air exchange. Make them easy using a heated awl. In addition, you can cover the box with a wire mesh, which also provides good ventilation.

The main thing is to get fresh air into the boxes, but the arthropods themselves could not be left free.

The number of containers for arranging a worm farm depends on the size of the future colony. If there is a desire to breed a large number of worms, it is better to purchase two or three such boxes, because as you progress, you will have to separate mature larvae from beetles.

As for the boxes of wood, they are not suitable for the maintenance of a flour mealworm. Breeding at home is best done in plastic or glass containers, since an adult animal can easily gnaw through holes in a wooden structure and get out.

At the next stage, it is necessary to prepare a suitable substrate for the maintenance of a flour mealworm. As you know, the main share of its diet is grain and cereals.

They are used as a substrate in which animals will live and develop. Ready soil is sold in specialized stores, but many farmers prefer home-made formulations, mixing together bran, cereals and other grains.

Formed texture additionally crushed, until it receives the state of fine powder. In this form, the mixture is much easier to handle, taking away the worms and beetles for further movement into a new container.

Often, farmers add bone meal, ground shells of crickets and a number of other components of animal origin to the soil. Their presence is beneficial to the nutritional value of the grown worms.

After successful preparation of the substrate, you can proceed to the next stage – the purchase of meal worms. Breeding at home gives a good result only if the basic rules of the upcoming action. Before you buy the first colony, you need to deal with the optimal number of individuals.

It is determined by the number of heads of the poultry to be fed..

  1. For the first arrangement of the farm is quite suitable colony from 5 thousand individuals of the hruschak. Under favorable conditions, within a few months the colony will grow twice.
  2. If there is no desire to breed a large number of arthropods, and the time for their maintenance is not limited to a few months, then 150 individuals of the beetles can be purchased.

Unlike many other types of arthropods, mealworm are demanding creatures that need proper care and care. In order for their content to justify the time spent, efforts and finances, it is important to take care of arranging a favorable environment.

Experts say that for full reproduction of the colony, it is necessary to ensure the temperature regime within 21−24 degrees Celsius. Therefore, you should find in the house the most heated area, where it will be possible to maintain the optimum temperature. Place under the farm should not be contaminated or treated with chemicals.

Otherwise, the future colony will simply die. When choosing a territory for breeding worms, it is customary to follow the following recommendations:

  1. The most favorable environment for the meal is considered to be a garage with a full heating system.
  2. To ensure a stable temperature regime, you can use a heater, which is sold in specialized hardware stores.
  3. If the temperature of the earth and the environment is too low, the worms will not start laying eggs, and they will refuse to give offspring.

After completing the above actions, it remains to wait until the mealworm begins reproduction. The larvae of the darkling beetle begin to reproduce themselves similar only after 10 weeks from the moment of birth. At the beginning of the reproduction process, the larvae turn into pupae, and then become mature beetles.

The latter begin to mate and lay eggs in the soil. Of the eggs after 1-4 weeks, the larvae appear on the light. During this period, the farmer needs to perform several simple actions:

  1. Regularly replace sliced fresh vegetables. Moldy food is better to remove, otherwise it will lead to the development of putrefactive processes.
  2. Dead larvae and beetles are removed from the container.

As soon as the eggs hatch from the first colony of larvae, they need to be moved to another place, for example, a wooden box. If they remain in the same container with the beetles, the latter will simply eat them.

But after being placed in a new box, they will continue to pair and lay eggs. When moving beetles and pupae, you should follow this guide:

  1. In another pot you need to put 5-8 centimeters of fresh substrate.
  2. Wearing gloves, from the first container you need to get beetles and pupae. As you know, beetles are completely safe, they never bite their hosts and rarely attempt to fly.
  3. In the second box you need to put a carrot or potato, cut into small particles. Then you need to cover the pot with a lid.

As soon as the newly formed larvae grow to an impressive size, but do not turn into pupae, they can be given to poultry for food. The main thing is not to forget that in a short time the mealworms pass to the pupal stage, and then the beetles.

If you need to keep pet food for a long time, it is better to put meal worms in the refrigerator. In this case, they will remain fresh for a long time.

In home breeding worms, it is important to regularly sift the substrate and support the process. As the larvae develops, the nutrient content of the soil decreases significantly. Therefore, as soon as the young individuals move from one form to another, you need to get the remaining unformed worms, and then place them in the third container.

In turn, the first box must be carefully sanitized and placed into it several inches of substrate. Only then can worms be returned.

In order for the worms to grow as quickly as possible, it is important to provide them with plenty of light. Keep animals in the dark is strictly prohibited.

Otherwise, they will stop developing or die.

Experienced farmers recommend using large cages, since the larger their surface area, the more comfortable the larvae will feel. Cleaning containers from waste and the remaining food is carried out as often as possible.

In the burlap should be present long slots that will provide full ventilation.

It is also sometimes necessary to separate some individuals from others, so that they quickly pupate. Only after this pupae return to the rest.

For arrangement of a worm farm use:

  1. Large boxes or containers of metal, plastic, glass. Their depth should be not less than 20−25 centimeters. In this case, the wider the capacity, the better.
  2. Burlap (sizes reach several square meters).
  3. Approximately one hundred individuals of a meal meal to start breeding.
  4. Food for worms, which include fruits, vegetables and oatmeal.
  5. Paper towels.
  6. Gauze.
  7. Sand.

At the bottom of the container should be placed bran and a source of moisture. As a container, you can use a carton from under the eggs, which is pre-moistened with water. Inside the tray should remain a comfortable humidity in the range of 60-70 percent, as well as the temperature regime of 26 to 28 degrees Celsius.

The required humidity is achieved by spraying with a spray gun.

For feeding queen beetles, they use carrots chopped on a coarse grater and any other vegetable food. Food is changed in a container twice a day, while at the time of restocking, the remnants of the previous meal are removed.

If the colony is in the tray for more than a week, it should be examined by separating the formed individuals from the larvae.

To do this, beetles that are sitting on an eggshell, you need to shake out in a clean container. Among them will be only live insects. After that, it is required to sift the bran to extract the remaining individuals.

Next in the container with all the bugs put a piece of cardboard to catch the survivors. Unfortunately, the mealworm has a high mortality rate, so the cleaning of the container should be regular.

It should be noted that for poultry flour worms – an incredible delicacy. However, due to their high caloric content, they cannot be used as the main food for birds.

Instead, worms should be served as treats, but not occupy a key place in the diet of animals.

If you clarify in advance how to breed flour worms at home, many problems can be avoided long before they appear. This will make breeding a worm productive and fun.

With the right approach and caring attitude to animals in a short period of time, the farmer will be able to breed a large colony of such useful creatures.
