Do I need a filter in the aquarium :: Equipment and accessories

For the aquarium to delight the eye, and its inhabitants are always healthy, it requires careful maintenance and the use of special equipment. One of the required attributes of a densely populated aquarium is a filter.

Is a filter always necessary in an aquarium? No, if there are few inhabitants and there are about 10 liters of water for one fish up to 5 cm in size.

In this case, biological balance will be established in the aquarium even without a filter, and with regular removal of debris accumulating at the bottom of the garbage and a weekly change of 1/10 of the water, the fish and plants will feel quite good.
In an aquarium without a filter, there must be aeration, it contributes to the saturation of water with oxygen and the oxidation of harmful substances. If the population of the aquarium is large, a filter must be provided.

There are several types of filters used by aquarists. The simplest is a foam sponge, put on an air dispenser. The rising bubbles cause a weak flow of water through the sponge, particles of debris are deposited on its surface.

From time to time the sponge should be carefully removed and rinsed.
Another option filter – air-lift. The principle of its operation is as follows: an air diffuser is placed in a tube with a diameter of 1-2 cm.

The lower end of the tube is located at the very bottom, the upper end is displayed in a small cuvette located above the water surface at the back wall of the aquarium. A number of small holes are drilled in the bottom of the cuvette, they are covered on top with a small plastic mesh, on which a layer of sand 1-2 cm thick is poured.
When aeration is turned on, the water along with the air flow through the tube enters the cuvette. In it, it passes through the sand and drops through the holes in the cuvette into the aquarium.

Such a filter has several important advantages: first of all, it purifies water very well. Cleaning takes place both mechanically, due to the passage of water through the sand, and as a result of the appearance of bacteria in the sand, which decompose harmful substances.

From time to time – for example, once a week, this filter is washed. Namely, accumulated debris is removed from the top, once every few weeks you can change the top layer of sand.
Such a filter will be even more effective in combination with a bottom filter. In this case, a sheet of plexiglass with a lot of small holes drilled in it is placed on the bottom. In one of the corners in the sheet a hole is made for the airlift tube.

Lining is placed under the sheet so that there is a distance of at least 1 cm between the bottom and the sheet. The lining should not impede the flow of water and can also be made of pieces of plexiglass.
A fine plastic mesh is laid on the sheet of plexiglass, the ground is poured on top. When working airlift water comes from under the plastic bottom, with all the soil acts as a filter.

Such a filter not only perfectly cleans the water, but also promotes the growth of aquarium plants.
There are external external filters that provide very high quality cleaning. Water can be supplied not only by airlift, but also by a special pump. In stores, you can buy factory filters of any type, both internal and external.

The choice of a particular filter is determined by the population of the aquarium and the preferences of the aquarist.

If you decide to start an aquarium, then the question inevitably arises before you: what is needed for normal functioning of the aquarium, what minimum equipment should be purchased to make the fish feel comfortable.

Do I need a filter in the aquarium?

Unfortunately, an aquarium is not a closed and self-sufficient system, and the water in it must be constantly cleaned, otherwise it will quickly bloom and become cloudy. Filter – this is one of the most necessary devices for the long-term maintenance of fish.

If you have a small aquarium up to 60 liters, then the best option would be to buy an internal filter, for larger tanks of 200, 300 and even 500 liters, an external filter is simply needed, which has a more elaborate cleaning system and is easy to maintain.

Do I need light in the aquarium?

So, what else besides the filter you need for a home aquarium and should also be purchased in advance. Many experienced fish owners recommend never relying on sunlight or putting a container of water under direct sunlight.

So the water will deteriorate quickly, and its temperature will jump during the day. But the twilight is also not the most favorable conditions for the life of the inhabitants of the aquarium.

Therefore, it is simply necessary to purchase a suitable aquarium lamp or lamp that will provide a comfortable environment.

Do I need a compressor in the aquarium?

Finally, the third necessary device in the aquarium is a compressor that provides water saturation with oxygen. Compressors are of two types: internal and external.

External do not occupy space inside the aquarium, but when working they are quite noisy, internal ones are quiet, but they take up a lot of space inside the aquarium.

Do I need a heater in the aquarium?

The decision of this question depends on what types of fish you are going to contain. If this is a thermophilic and capricious tropical species, it is better to get a modern water heater for an aquarium that will maintain a constant water temperature. For more stable fish, you can first bring the water to the required room temperature, which will continue to persist.

What you really need is a thermometer that will show vibrations, and you will not be able to respond to them in time.

Before installing the bottom filter should be familiar with its features. Of course, the first minus will appear immediately.

To install the system, it is necessary to completely drain the water from the aquarium, remove the soil and all the decorative elements, which takes a lot of time.

The indisputable advantage of such a filter is:

  • continuous circulation of water from the entire aquarium;
  • when passing through the soil, it stagnates at the bottom;
  • Such a water cycle allows you to avoid rapid contamination of the aquarium and the emergence of various kinds of infections.

Aeration of the soil helps the algae to strengthen and develop their root system, but when the soil is oversaturated with oxygen, leaf growth slows down. In addition, in the soil there are no nutrients for algae, they go along with the water.

Therefore, this design solution is not recommended for use in an aquarium where a lot of greenery grows.

Even when using a bottom filter, dirt particles still remain on the ground surface. They do not pass through it due to its large size. Therefore, as mentioned above, you have to wash the pebbles.

But you can avoid unnecessary mess with changing water and washing the soil.

For this you need to put an additional filter element that will have time to drive through all the water. Or you can buy a device – a siphon, which removes large particles of dirt from the surface of the soil (this procedure is preferably carried out weekly).

Another drawback of the system is that the holes in the tubes quickly become clogged with debris. To clean them, you need to completely pour water from the aquarium and disassemble the entire structure.

For a small container (up to 50 liters) this will not cause a particular problem, but for a large aquarium it is very difficult and hard work.

Many aquarists claim that bottom filters can already be left in the past. Of course, they quite effectively clean the aquarium from contamination, but to maintain cleanliness, additional methods of care are required.

There are alternative devices: external and internal filters.

Each model is designed for a specific volume of the aquarium. Also filters can include the device for aeration of air – the compressor.

Such devices are able to pass through themselves the entire volume of the aquarium in just 10-15 minutes.

The advantage of such filters is quick installation and easy maintenance. To make cleaning, it is enough to disassemble it and wash all the structural elements under the faucet.

The bottom filter is an effective way to filter water, which allows it to be cleaned naturally (passing through the soil). This type of construction has both advantages and disadvantages, which is why many aquarists do not dare to acquire it.

But why spend money if you can build yourself a bottom filter from inexpensive materials?

This type of filtration was known at the end of the last century, but it is still used today. Difficulties in installation and maintenance make fans switch to more modern methods of water purification using external and internal filters (the latter are attached to the inner wall of the aquarium).
