How to cool the water in the aquarium :: how to cool the aquarium in summer :: Equipment and accessories
Every summer in front of the hosts aquariums one problem arises – what to do when the water in the aquarium heats up to 30 degrees. It is known that this temperature can be fatal for most species of fish.
So what to do?
1. Too high a water temperature in an aquarium is dangerous in that the solubility of oxygen in it decreases, while the content of harmful carbon dioxide increases. In addition, the decomposition of organic matter occurs in superheated water faster, and this can also cause poisoning of the inhabitants of the aquarium. Please note that not all fish can tolerate a sharp rise in water temperature, many can get heatstroke.
Also, overheating has a negative effect on the operation of aquarium equipment, since various filters and pumps do not have their own cooling system, they are cooled with the help of water that passes through them, and overheated water often causes them to fail. aquarium in extreme heat? There are several ways, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
2. Use special coolers for aquariums. Such devices are reliable and do not consume much electricity.
However, please note that they have their drawbacks. They are very expensive (worth less than $ 500 and do not count), a large aquarium will require several devices, which means fabulous costs.
In addition, many of these devices work only under the condition that the ambient air temperature does not rise above 35 ° C, which during the abnormal heat in the summer period makes them simply useless. In addition, these devices are not equipped with their own cooling systems, which means that you will have to cool the device itself (most often with a fan).
3. Try to use for cooling aquariums the so-called “grandfathers” methods. For example, daily change the water in the aquarium.
Take a portion of the heated water and replace it with a colder one, thereby reducing the overall temperature of the water in the aquarium. In the most neglected cases, replace up to half of all the water in the aquarium.
4. The second method (even more effective). Place ice packs in the aquarium. The main thing is to make sure that the ice tank is well closed, because if a leak occurs, the fish may die due to a sharp overcooling.
Put ice packs in the most obscure corners of your aquarium, as the contact of the fish with the package can end badly. Change packages every 5-6 hours. And one more tip. In extreme heat, keep the aquarium lid open, so evaporation of water will help reduce the temperature of the water.
If you keep the so-called jumping fish, then cover the aquarium with a grid with small cells (namely small, so that the fish do not get stuck in them).
The main disadvantage of water cooling with a fan is water loss. In a week, about 5 liters evaporate from a 100 liter aquarium.
In addition, the humidity of the air in the room rises dramatically, which can be harmful to others. Also, too high humidity can damage furniture and molds on the walls.
Hot summer – lower the temperature of the water and cool the aquarium
It is best of course to use modern technology, although there are proven, simple and inexpensive ways. To modern can be attributed special station monitoring parameters in the aquarium, which are also able to cool and water. The disadvantages include the price and buy them is not so easy, most likely you will have to order from abroad.
There are also coolers and special elements that are designed to cool the aquarium, but again they are not cheap.
From the available methods – place several coolers (fans from a computer in a simple way) in the lid with the lamps. So often those aquarists who install powerful lamps so that the surface of the water does not overheat.
It works quite well, because in addition to air cooling, water surface oscillations still occur, which intensifies gas exchange.
The disadvantage is that there is not always time to assemble and install such a thing. You can do it easier, if there is a fan at home, direct the flow of air to the surface of the water.
Fast, easy, efficient.
As already mentioned, aquarium lights are often very hot water surface. Turn off the lighting, your plants will survive quite a couple of days without it, but overheating them much harder.
