Blue-green algae in an aquarium: how to deal with them
The aquarium should always be kept clean. There are situations when the owners have no time to take care of him and after a while they notice such a serious nuisance as the blue-green algae in the aquarium. They appear for a reason, there are reasons why this may be the case:
- poor care of the aquarium;
- excessive warming of the water (rays of the sun, battery, etc.);
- presence of decomposing organic matter at the bottom;
- rare change of water;
- ingress to the aquarium of harmful substances.
Most often, the blue-green algae in the aquarium appear because the owners forget to change the water in time, and a large number of pathogenic bacteria begins to accumulate in it. Those are able to multiply very quickly and destroy the useful flora in aquariums.
It is in this way that blue-greenish deposits appear on the walls, which require immediate action.
If the aquarium is exposed to light and a large amount of solar radiation enters it, it contributes to the rapid growth and reproduction of blue-green or green algae. It is very important that the room in which he stands is well ventilated.
But still an important place in this case is precisely the timely cleaning of aquarium deposits and the replacement of water with fresh one. The lack of oxygen, clean water leads to pollution and as a result can lead to disastrous results – illness or even death of aquarium inhabitants.
If blue-green algae started in the aquarium, this is a serious signal, indicating that the residents of such a glass house immediately need help. It is important to know that such harmful algae are capable of destroying all living things that are in their “field of vision”, so they provide unbearable conditions for aquarium inhabitants.
First of all, they absorb all the nutrients, oxygen, and emit poisons, which in turn affect negatively all living things.
The worst consequence of such an unpleasant moment, like green algae, is the accumulation of cyanide secreted by cyanide bacteria. It is so dangerous that it can kill all living creatures in an aquarium. At the same time, a pronounced unpleasant smell is heard from it, which sometimes becomes unbearable.
These poisonous bacteria infect stones, soil and any other objects. Fighting dangerous pests that have already appeared is not easy.
In this case, a thorough treatment of the entire aquarium is required.
A very dangerous moment is the lack of oxygen for fish, snails and other aquatic inhabitants. It is observed when dangerous bacteria settle.
They provoke the release of nitrogen, increase its concentration to high values. Meanwhile, the oxygen becomes so little that it becomes difficult for living beings in such an environment to breathe and maintain normal activity.
In other words, the pathogenic bacteria that cause the appearance of blue-green algae, lead to the death of fish and other living underwater creatures.
If green pests are noticed in an aquarium, you need to understand that this is a direct threat to the life of fish, snails, crabs and many other aquatic inhabitants. In this case, there is such a thing as a relapse.
In this situation, it means the development of “aquarium disease” even if such a dwelling of fish was processed and the water was changed in it. The fact is that even the smallest remains of such evil bacteria can cause repeated trouble.
Cyanobacteria are so tenacious that it is very difficult to kill. It is much easier to prevent their appearance.
You can detect such a nuisance by feeling the stones and the soil on the bottom. If it became slippery and covered with a blue-greenish film (even the thinnest), we are talking about such a bacterial lesion.
The waste products of these ill-fated bacteria are capable, in the direct sense of the word, of complete contamination of the aquarium’s spaces.
In order to survive and multiply, cyanobacteria are fed from the aquarium water, using all the useful substances due to the fish for their insidious purposes. They are able to affect not only the soil, but also various stones, snags and even various plants. They are very persistent and survive even in catastrophic conditions for them.
Even the most enduring plants that are difficult to “kill” can envy their vitality.
Such damaged pest colonies are very quickly restored when compared to other living things. If you do nothing, breeding, they will gradually more and more fill the aquarium space and cause water pollution.
Over time, it will emit an unbearably unpleasant smell. Should take all necessary measures as soon as possible. Otherwise, there is every chance that the inhabitants of the aquarium will fall ill and die.
As is known, living creatures cannot live without oxygen, and the presence of these pests will undoubtedly lead to a lack of such a substance and will provide all the conditions for the death of fish.
Scientists refer to the blue-green algae to the class of bacteria. In appearance, they resemble a mucous carpet on the surface of an artificial reservoir of a dirty brown color.
Such living forms have exceptional adaptability and vitality. If the blue-green alga started up in an aquarium, then it will be difficult to get rid of it.
If you give a precise definition, it is cyanobacteria that appear on the walls of the aquarium when it is exposed to prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, or when the water temperature is higher than is required. Also beneficial to the development of blue-green is a large amount of organic impurities.
Such bacteria quickly begin to develop if the aquarium is not regularly cleaned. Also, the cause of cyanobacteria is a rare change of water in the aquarium.
Blue-green algae is very unpretentious, they have enough minimum conditions for development. These bacteria take all the nutrients necessary for their development and growth out of the water.
They grow not only on the ground, but also on any object that may be at the bottom of the aquarium: stones, snags, shells. The unique ability to restore quickly allows blue-green algae to quickly restore its population.
Therefore, to get rid of them is not so easy.
The peculiarity of these microorganisms living in the aquarium is an unpleasant odor. The greater the surface of the artificial pond covers the blue-green alga, the more polluted the water becomes, and the aquarium itself turns into a decaying puddle.
The detrimental effect of blue-green algae on the artificial microclimate of an aquarium is that they prevent water from dissolving oxygen, increasing the amount of nitrogen in it. Getting rid of such bacteria is not easy.
There is a special way to deal with blue-green algae that every aquarist should know.
The simplest and most common way to deal with blue-green algae is to darken the aquarium. To do this, remove from the aquarium fish, plants, stones and snags, compressor, filters and other equipment.
After that, it is closed from the light for three days. During this time, carbon dioxide ceases to enter into water, which is emitted by blue-green algae.
In the absence of light, such a bacterium will die in three days.
The danger of this method of cleaning is that the soil can remain microscopic particles of such algae, which after a short time will again develop into a huge colony. Blackout aquarium should be combined with disinfection of an artificial reservoir.
Only in this case it is possible to defend more reliably, which helps to further deal with the problem.

Algae in an aquarium, how to get rid of and fight with all their species
An algal flash is a visual indication of a violation (absence) of a biobalance in an aquarium. This is the loss of any link in the balance!
Finding out what link fell, you need to return it to its place. What a newbie to do is hard!
Here are the main reasons for the loss of the biobalance link:
– excessive amount of daylight in the aquarium or wrong aquarium lighting mode. Accordingly, it is necessary to reduce or adjust daylight hours.
Or in general, if possible, turn off the light for a couple of days, as a preventive measure.
– lack of daylight or the use of “wrong” lamps with a “wrong” spectrum. Accordingly, it is necessary to increase the light day or remove the lamps with a “bad” spectrum and you need to buy lamps for the spectrum or purchase lamps for the missing spectrum.

– the presence in the aquarium of excess dead organic matter and dirt (dead plants, fish, food residues, kakul, etc.). Simply put, the aquarium does not have time to cope with so much “garbage” and the only way out of our beloved, living aquarium, is a call to help algae, who happily gobble up all this byaku.
Accordingly, it is necessary to remove all the “garbage”: siphon the bottom of the aquarium, clean the walls, decor and equipment, mechanically try to remove the algae, as well as make more frequent and more complete water changes for fresh, eventually, pour aquarium coal into the filter compartment.
– The following reason follows from the above and is a destructive continuation of the “dirt” in the aquarium. All dead organics are decomposed by beneficial bacteria and fungi, and removed from the aquarium.
If this dead organic matter a lot and it accumulates, the microorganisms do not have time to process it! In the aquarium, poisons begin to accumulate – decomposition products: ammonia, nitrites and nitrates, which leads not only to the appearance of algae, but generally ruins all life in the aquarium.
In addition to the above measures for thorough cleaning of the aquarium, you need to apply the following aquarium chemistry:
A) Zeolite. Sold in pet stores or other places.
For example, a mixture of zeolite and coal is ubiquitous. Fluval Zeo-Carb.
On a note: you need to know that aquarium coal is not effective from poisons and only ion-exchange resin – zeolite removes them. Read more …
B) Preparations of bio-starters, as well as preparations promoting the increase of colonies of beneficial bacteria. Simply put, these are drugs that contain the very bacteria that decompose poisons.
A lot of such drugs, for example, are popular: Tetra Bactozym, Tetra NitratMinus, Tetra NitrateMinus Pearls, Sera bio Nitrivec and others.
3. A large number of plants in the aquarium.
No one has scientifically proved that plants suppress algae, but the fact remains that in an aquarium with live aquarium plants (1/2, 2/3), there are no algal outbreaks, except greenish dots sometimes appear, and then from strong illumination.
Here is an example from my own experience. I had a herbalist for growth (I grew plants for the future of an aquascape), there were many different plants. The time has come, I made my scape, spread out plants and flooded some algae (algae) in it, and this is all because the aquarium is young, the plants have not gotten stronger after transplantation, and their number has decreased.
The time passed, the plants grew stronger and took over the lower ones and the thread disappeared.
Therefore, if you have the opportunity to provide plants with proper care: LIGHT, CO2, PLE – surely plant beds!
4. There are useful fish that fight – eat algae and algal plaque:
A) Siamese Algae Eaters – tireless workers of the aquarium, sometimes it seems that the only meaning of their life is the insatiable desire to kiss all the plants, suck all the stones and walk through all the aquarium decorations. They can still be found under the abbreviation SAE, which stands for Siamese Algae Eater and translates as Siamese algae.
There are also KAE and IAE – Chinese and Indian algae. Effective from algae “black beard”, “filament” and “deer horns”, etc.
B) Ototsinklyus – no less effective fish. Due to the structure of its mouth gently and well remove algae from plants, decor and walls.
Copes with green, brown (diatoms), etc.
B) Ancistrus– also helpful. But, unlike the aforementioned fish, adult antsistrus individuals are lazy.
And they say that in addition to algae, they chew and plants.
D) The whole family is also a good helper in the fight against algae. petsilievyh – guppies, swordtails, mollies, patcilia and others.
D) All possible clams. – apularias, coils, fizy, etc.
5. And finally, the aquarium chemistry will come to the rescue, the overwhelming algae.
In pet stores sold a lot of these drugs, as a rule, in their name they contain the word “Algo” (alga), for example, Tetra AlgoStop Depot. Use these drugs should be carefully, wisely and according to the instructions. I recommend Tetra products precisely because they have the mildest effect.
With proper applications – taking into account all the circumstances in the aquarium, Tetra preparations do not adversely affect the plants.
So, we have examined the main causes of the appearance of algae in the aquarium, as well as dismantled the main methods of dealing with them. Finally, it should be noted that, as a rule, “algal trouble comes in a complex”, and therefore it is necessary to deal with it in a complex, i.e. not one method, but several at once, if not all at once.
