Good day, friends. As I promised, I have prepared for you an article entitled “Black Beard in an Aquarium”. Rather, I will not write here about how beautiful and delightful she is, not at all.
I want to talk about how to get rid of a black beard, as this question still torments novice aquarists, pushes them to use chemicals and so on. However, these methods bring only a temporary effect. There is a very interesting topic to mention about my articles about friends of aquarium plants, which you can find on this and this link.
But let’s still talk more about the topic.
What is actually the essence of the difficult struggle with a black beard?
More effective ways to combat this scourge are based on depriving algae in your underwater garden with micro and macro elements. More details about all this you can find on these links:
As a rule, only one element from the periodic table plays iron on plant growth – iron. If there is a shortage of this element in an aquarium, then you will not see any plant growth. Why am I saying this?
Simply, many people think that iron deficiency can be compensated by other substances: nitrates or phosphates. And this is not true!
These two compounds play a key role in the development of algae in any aquarium.
If your aquas have an excess of light, organic matter, carbon dioxide and nutrients, then the development of certain algae is irreversible. What is the essence of the fight against these pests? The main thing is to crush the parasites of unicellular higher plants.
This is mainly done thanks to fast-growing plants, the list of which I want to publish next time.
Which of the macro elements play a key role in the development of hydrophytes? That’s right, phosphates and nitrates.
If you don’t clean the aquarium, you have chosen the wrong filter for it, the biofiltration is disturbed, then organics accumulate in such a reservoir, which will promote the rapid development of algae, for example, blue-green. BUT! If the bank normally runs biofiltration processes, you control the level of the above-mentioned macroelements, do not allow contamination of the home aquarium with decomposition products and fish life, problems with unwanted guests will be much less, or not at all.
I wrote an article about the nitrate cycle not so long ago; you can read it.
The concentration of phosphate in the amount of 1 milligram per liter of water can affect the burst of algae development, and higher plants can assimilate even tiny concentrations of phosphates, which is not entirely good for parasites. Another observation made for my not very big practice: the less in the aquaticu of such useful elements as potassium and iron, the greater the chances that for algae there will be more organic matter. And this is for them extra food.
That is why experienced aquarists do not advise the use of chemistry to combat algae, as this gives temporary results. For more than a dozen years people have tried all kinds of chemical rubbish and came to the conclusion that it is better to deprive algae with organic compounds, than to poison the whole aquarium with chemical preparations.
Well, now we are getting close to the problem: how to get rid of a black beard.
What do you need to start? First, be patient, persistence and hard work.
If you recently launched an aquarium, then you must first wait for the time until a biological balance is established in the bank. If the biological equilibrium is established, and the black beard is still present in the aquarium, try the AQUAYER Algicide + CO2 tool. It is especially effective in the local processing of these algae.
But if you do not eliminate the cause of the appearance of a black beard, she may return. There are three integral parts by which a black beard will be destroyed – a head on its shoulders, work and most importantly patience.
A head on his shoulders should always be, since you are engaged in aquarism.
There are several other components: carbon dioxide, light and fertilizer for higher plants. I want to note that if there is a shortage of one of the above points, then you will hardly be able to successfully fight a black beard.
How should your confrontation with the black scourge look like in practice? That’s how:
– Keep your aquarium clean, try to remove organic compounds from the aquarium, phosphates, nitrates as carefully as possible. It goes to algae food. It will help you in this water change.
First try to replace 10-25 percent of the water every day. Weekly substitution will be the topic only if there is no algae in aquas.
Cut the rations of fish. Do not feed the fish until they are obozhrutsya. Better you do not feed them.
Throw so much feed that the fish can eat in 5 minutes. After regular feeding, siphon the soil from the remnants of the uneaten food.
Take care of the purchase of fish-orderlies, like girinokhaylusov and antsistrusov. In more detail about aquarium attendants you can find in these articles:
If possible, find out the concentration of phosphates and nitrates in the water that you add during regular changes. Contact the sanitary station so that they do you all the necessary tests if this is possible.
If it is not possible to perform such operations, try using distilled water and adding calcium salts to it.
– Use carbon dioxide. If finances allow, buy a CO2 installation, but if it’s too expensive for you, then you can use a homemade one.
A bottle of yeast will do. I plan to write a post about it soon.

– Plant in the aquarium more fast-growing plants. Echinodorus, cryptocorynes and anubias are not rolling here, we need long-stem plants such as elodea, wallisneria and so on. Then, as the problem is resolved, replace them with others gradually.
Constantly cut off young stock from the common stem and squat it into the ground. Young shoots consume nutrients more intensively.
– Do not forget about fertilizers for aquarium plants. You can use complex, so that there was no shortage of one or another element and the plants did not suffer. Pay close attention to the divalent gland.
Without it, the plants will not grow normally.
– After buying new plants, do not forget to disinfect them in potassium permanganate. This is important, since your struggle with the scourge can go for a smark. Here you are trying to try, and another bush alternanty brought the whole struggle to nothing.
If the normal, then you need to disinfect everything (plants, equipment), and put the fish in quarantine.
If you stick to all these tips, then you will probably defeat the attack and the aquarium will become even more beautiful than it was. The first sign of victory over a black beard – it should turn white, and then within three weeks should disappear.
Instead of a beard will appear green algae, which will also be pipets.
And that’s all for today, thank you for your attention, friends.
