Currently, pet stores have a huge range of feed for our pets, cats, birds and aquarium fish. To understand this diversity is often difficult.
Let’s take a little look at the feed and start with their main types.
The range of dry artificial feed for aquarium fish is diverse. Their quality has also improved significantly: containing many essential substances and balanced in composition (in some feed, three or four dozen animal and vegetable components are combined), these foods will satisfy the needs of almost all popular types of aquarium fish.
When choosing food, you should pay attention to the manufacturer of the product, composition, shelf life, and also for which group of fish it is suitable.
Consider that the information provided by manufacturers of artificial feeds is not enough to compare and evaluate them. When choosing a feed until today, the main criteria were the practice of use and the authority of the manufacturer.
Feed for different groups of fish differ in shape and particle size, composition, they can swim for a long time (chips and flakes, floating sticks) or sink (pellets and tablets) in the aquarium.
Consider the eating habits of common groups of aquarium fish.
- We will start with goldfish, which are loved by many aquarists. Their diet should be less protein than in feed intended for tropical fish. In addition, it is good if the composition of feed for them includes natural substances that increase the brightness of the color. To the greatest extent, these requirements are met by the brand Nutrafin Golgfish (Hagen), AniMin Goldfish (Tetre), etc.
- For cold-blooded fish contained in ponds (goldfish, koi carps, etc.) they also produce special feeds, for example, the TetraPond feed line.
- Special feeds are also available for fish such as Malawian cichlids (Nutrafin Cichl Most dry feeds come in the form of floating flakes or sinking granules. How do you know what your fish can do? Look at their mouths!
- Top mouth fish like food that floats on the surface.
- It is convenient for small fish with a final mouth to collect food in the water column. They are suitable as sinking granules, and floating flakes.
- Fish with a lower mouth like to collect food from the bottom.
When buying food, you need to remember that you need to store an open can for no more than two to six months, otherwise the food begins to oxidize and some substances that are part of it, first of all – vitamins, begin to break down. Therefore, it is better to buy a jar of such size that the fish will be able to “eat” in the specified time.
If you still give fish a long time ago open food, then it is worth dropping vitamins on it: in any case, it will not be worse.
Live feed should be used carefully. Indeed, in pet stores, respectively, and in your aquarium, it comes from natural waters. That is, the danger together with him to bring pathogens of fish into the aquarium, in addition, most of the benthic invertebrates (for example, the pipeker and the bloodworm) can accumulate various harmful substances in themselves if they live in places where the waste products of the industry waste.
When purchasing such food, you should ask the seller where he came from. And before you feed it, you need to wash it several times.
When buying live food, some aquarists freeze it in the freezer, destroying pathogens. It is more convenient to buy frozen food in the store.
Sometimes some especially choosy fish feed only on live food, it is necessary to retrain them for frozen or dry food gradually. One of the most beloved and valuable species of live fish food is a bloodworm.
Coretra is slightly inferior in popularity, but it is absolutely indispensable for fish that do not take food from the bottom. A very valuable type of food is Cyclops, which contains a lot of vitamins, especially a lot of carotene and vitamin A, which give the color of the fish brightness. Tubular – very fat and high-calorie food, often leading to obesity, can accumulate a lot of harmful substances, for example, heavy metals.
Therefore, first of all, before feeding your pets with a live pipemaker, it is necessary to overdo the worms for 4-7 days in cool water, washing them daily in running cold water (of course, it is even better to arrange a “constant” washing for the pipemaker). Daphnia contains a large amount of a ballast substance that improves digestion, especially it is good to combine it with protein-rich foods, such as bloodworm or pipeker.
Often the larvae of artemia, rotifers and ciliates are used to feed the fry.
Often, other types of aquarium fish are used to feed predators: young goldfish (navels), danios, guppies. It is not recommended to use fish that are independently caught in natural waters, there may be causative agents of dangerous diseases.
In addition to frozen food, you can give your pets gelatin feed (Tetra Freshdelica), in which more useful substances are stored.
It turns out that fish do not mind to diversify your diet with human food. For example, snails ampouleria, shrimp, catfish will be happy with pieces of cucumber and pumpkin, apples and carrots, corn grains from a can. They and other fish will thank you for scalded nettle leaves, spinach, lettuce.
Most sea fish and large cichlids will be delighted with squid and shrimp meat, as well as oyster and mussel meat. The attention of the majority will attract shriveled turkey or chicken meat.
And beef meat is not very suitable for feeding fish, the fact is that the protein contained in it is absorbed by fish by only three percent, the rest begins to decompose and spoil the water! White bread is also not very suitable, it’s better to offer decoys to fish or oatmeal.
For fry, very good food is boiled mashed egg yolk. But you need to be careful: it is given in small portions, this food also pollutes the water!
