Applying iron chelate and cooking it yourself

Iron chelate is widely used to treat disorders of chlorophyll formation, as well as stimulate photosynthetic processes in crops growing on depleted soils. This substance is not scarce and is quite cheap, so most often it is purchased in finished form.

However, you can feed yourself, adhering to the technology and respecting the proportions of the main components.

Iron chelate is not scarce and is pretty cheap.

Pure iron chelate is a powder of a dirty orange color that has no odor and does not have a pronounced taste. According to its chemical structure, it is a bivalent iron atom enclosed in a shell of compounds of a weak organic acid. There is no covalent bond between these elements, so the valency of the chelated ferum remains unchanged until the shell breaks down.

The primary purpose of the ligand is to protect the base material. from interaction with other active molecules capable of reducing iron to the trivalent form.

Iron chelate is extremely useful for plants, since it not only participates in metabolic processes, but is also part of the enzymes that stabilize oxygen metabolism and normalize the formation of the characteristic green pigment of foliage.

  • complete lack of toxicity;
  • compatibility with mineral supplements and most pesticides;
  • good solubility in water;
  • high transport activity and easy digestibility;
  • universality in application.

It is widely believed that rusty water is also a source of iron. The element is really present there, however, in an insoluble form, which has a detrimental effect on the root system of plants.

Moreover, in some cases, even the available form may be useless:

  1. If the soil contains an increased amount of chalk or dolomite. The mentioned components interfere with the normal absorption of iron – its lack will be felt even with regular introduction.
  2. With the active interaction of the element with oxygen. In this case, the oxidation will not allow crops to obtain the required amount of fertilizer.

Iron chelate is a versatile drug., which can be used both for root dressing and spraying. The first method is resorted to in cases of advanced chlorosis, and the second is more suitable for preventive treatments.

To determine that plants suffer from iron deficiency, can be the following features:

  • young leaves begin to turn yellow, characteristic yellowish streaks appear on them;
  • there is a pronounced chopping of the leaves;
  • flowers, buds and foliage fall for no apparent reason;
  • the growth of green mass stops;
  • on the plant appear ugly flowers of irregular shape;
  • the edges of the leaves curl up into tubes.

Conducting root feeding involves making 0.8% of the working solution and its further use for watering plants. The average consumption of fertilizer is 4−5 l per 100 m² plot.

Under the fruit trees usually make two buckets of liquid.

Extra root dressing is carried out by spraying the foliage of the plants with a prepared solution from a fine spray dispenser. First preventive treatment held immediately after blooming of the kidneys, subsequent – with an interval of 14 days.

If the plant shows clear signs of iron deficiency, four sprays are necessary, and two will be sufficient to prevent chlorosis. Trees should preferably be treated with a 0.8% solution, vegetables, berries and ornamental crops – 0.4%.

The best time for spraying is early morning or evening hours.

Since the ferum quickly precipitates in the finished solution, preparations based on it should be stored undiluted. It is strongly recommended to protect the substance from direct sunlight.

The maximum allowable shelf life is one and a half years.

It is not difficult to make iron chelate at home – it does not require special knowledge or professional equipment. There are two ways of self-preparation, and both involve the use of ferrous sulfate (in other words, ferrous sulfate), which must be purchased in advance at any agricultural store.

Fertilizer can be made in two ways:

  1. Dissolve a teaspoon of sulfate in 500 ml of liquid and add 10 g of ascorbic acid to it. The latter should not contain glucose. The mixture is diluted with three liters of boiled water and thoroughly mixed. The concentration of this solution is about 0.5% and is optimal for foliar dressing.
  2. In a three-liter container filled with boiled water, pour a tablespoon of citric acid and a teaspoon of sulfate. After thoroughly mixing the contents of the jar, you get an orange liquid, suitable for both spraying and watering.

Making iron chelate at home is a snap.

The properties of hand-made iron chelate are almost as good as the purchased options, but its shelf life is much shorter.

Since the substance is prone to rapid oxidation and precipitation, unused liquid will become useless after 2 weeks.

Iron chelate is a very useful substance that can not only cure chlorosis, but also prevent its occurrence. The drug has a reasonable price and is sold in all agricultural stores, and with a special desire it can be prepared with his own hands.
