Ways to fight a black beard in an aquarium and the reasons for its appearance

For any aquarist, the appearance of algae called “black beard” in an aquarium is a problem. First of all it spoils the view of the reservoir.

For fish, this moss does not pose any danger, but for plants it is destructive. The parasite sucks out all the juice from the plants.

At the first sign of a problem, urgent action is required. It is interesting that the moss does not develop in artificial reservoirs, as there are no favorable conditions for this.

Blackbeard is a multicellular alga, which, with abundant growth, settles not only on plants, but also on the filter, snags and other decorative elements. It looks like thin threads of black color, no longer than 5 cm.

Under aquarium conditions, this alga breeds very quickly and, if not taken in time, it will cover the entire water body.

Fully cleaning the tank is not an easy task. The parasite can not be overcome by a single mechanical cleaning.

Before you begin to fight the disease and cure it, you need to establish why it appears. The active growth of harmful algae can trigger many factors, but The following can be distinguished from the main ones::

  • Irregular water replacement – old water with a large amount of organic matter is a favorable environment for algae. Also attractive for her silt on the ground. If there is aeration in the aquarium, then this makes such an aquarium an ideal place for the development of black moss on plants in the aquarium. It can not be overcome without the full purification of water.
  • Overpopulation – fish release natural metabolic products and create a nutrient medium for harmful algae in water. The number of individuals in the aquarium should be calculated according to the rules.
  • Planting new plants – if they are not pre-treated with antiseptic preparations, then with a high degree of probability you can bring a large number of black beard spores into the aquarium.
  • Overfeeding the fish – the remnants of food decompose in the water and provide a nutrient medium for the parasite. Also overfeeding leads to the fact that the water becomes turbid.
  • Too powerful compressor will raise the sludge from the bottom and create favorable conditions for algae.
  • Irregular filter maintenance leads to additional nutrients for black moss.
  • An excessive soil siphon will release the organic matter from it, which feeds on plants, but its overabundance may provoke the development of spores of harmful algae. When using artificial plants, siphon soil is needed weekly.

Even an experienced aquarium owner may encounter such a problem, forgetting about the rules of maintenance of the reservoir. At beginners the parasite settles, as a rule, because of inexperience.

You can get rid of a black beard in an aquarium, but the struggle must begin at the first signs of the appearance of moss. There are several ways:

With the help of chemistry, you can get a very fast result and completely get rid of the beard in the aquarium, but this may have a negative impact on fish and snails. Therefore, before treating the water, the inhabitants of the aquarium should be removed.

Chemical treatment is justified only when black moss has affected most of the aquarium.

If time to react to the problem, then you can get by with the biological method. Mechanical cleansing is a troublesome thing that is used when there is no other way to remove algae.

Such a way to get rid of algae black beard has a significant drawback – a violation of the already established world of the reservoir. Before the procedure you need to plant all the inhabitants and completely flush the aquarium.

Plants should be deposited in a separate container from the fish.

The soil is washed and ignited for at least one hour. All decorations of the reservoir are washed with a rough brush and sent to a saturated solution of manganese. The aquarium itself is also washed with the same solution.

If there is such an opportunity, then it is better to fill the aquarium with a bright pink manganese solution and leave it for three hours. After this time, the tank is washed and again preparing for the colonization of the fish: the ground is laid, the scenery, clean water is poured.

Plants before planting should be treated with diluted hydrogen peroxide. Immerse coarse plants in the solution for 5−10 minutes, more gentle – for 3-5 minutes.

After the procedure, you can return them to a permanent aquarium. This method of cleaning the aquarium is also used when the water is cloudy.

Exposure to chemistry can completely remove the black beard from the aquarium. For water purification hydrogen peroxide, furatsilin, saydeks or antibiotics are used. After the procedure, you need to change the water and only after that settle there fish.

It is also recommended to further clean the decorative elements.

The usual baking soda is less dangerous. It is added to the reservoir at the rate of 5 liters of water per 1 gram of soda.

The tool changes the pH level, in such water the black beard becomes uncomfortable, and it dies. But it should be borne in mind that not all fish can carry an alkaline environment, so before using the tool, you need to clarify the requirements for the content of a pet.

This method consists in introducing into the pond fish that feed on black threads, or planting rapidly developing plants that absorb organic matter. Biological treatment is relevant at the initial stage of development of the parasite and as a prevention problem.

Will help in the fight against algae such fish:

  • labo;
  • girinoheylus;
  • antsistrus.

Snails are not able to cope with the problem. These fish should be kept at the rate of 1 fish per 30 liters of water.

The growth of parasitic algae suppress such plants:

They displace the black beard, eliminating the nutrient medium for it.
