Useful properties and use of red algae

The wide variety of flora of the planet Earth fascinates and fascinates biologists. Plants are home and food for members of the animal world, and are also used by humans in many areas.

Living organisms of sea depths, in particular, algae do not stand aside. Red algae, which are widely used in medicine, industry and agriculture, have a special value due to their unique properties.

Red algae are actively used in medicine, industry and agriculture

Red algae (Rhodophyta) – aquatic plants, found mainly in marine waters. Found fossils indicate that the plants of this group already existed on the planet more than 1 billion years ago.

Nowadays, there are from 500 to 1000 varieties of red algae, among which there are about 200 freshwater species.

The main varieties of red algae:

  • bangiofaceae (bangiophyceae);
  • floridea (florideophyceae);
  • enfeltia (ahnfeltia);
  • phyllophora;
  • porphyra;
  • gelidium.

Red algae, whose representatives differ from other species in chloroplasts, not only the green pigment chlorophyll, get their color due to the presence in the composition of red phycoerythrins, blue phycobilins and yellow carotenoids. When these pigments are mixed with chlorophyll, they paint the plant in various shades of red.

Algae are able to perceive a larger spectrum of ultraviolet rays, due to which they can grow at a depth of 100 to 500 m. In the water, the algae appear black due to the strong absorption of sunlight, and on land they turn red.

Thallus plants are represented by multicellular forms and have a different structure:

  • bushy;
  • leafy
  • filamentous;
  • lamellar.

Red algae can grow at a depth of 100 to 500m

Red algae is a non-unique name for representatives of this department. Because of their ability to accumulate purple starch (glucose polymer) as a storage substance, they are also called purple red.

In addition, the cells of these plants contain polyhydric alcohols and low molecular weight carbon.

Magnesium and calcium carbonate are present in some species (for example, coralin), which make it possible to form a special skeleton. Crimsons form the basis of coral reefs.

Algae cells are formed from the inner cellulose and outer amorphous layer, from which agar is isolated.

Breeding methods:

  1. asexual. Reproduction with the help of bezgugukovyh disputes. This is a feature of many types of red algae;
  2. vegetative. Representatives of the class of Bagniyev and Floridian;
  3. sexual. Reproduction by oogamy. This process can be briefly described as follows: when the female sexual organ of oogony attracts sperm with a special protrusion (trichogina), as a result of complex development, a gonimoblast is formed – a filamentary structure from which spores germinate.

Red algae reproduce in asexual, vegetative and sexual way

Crimsons are used in industry and cooking. They contain a large amount of vitamins and minerals, and their basis is easily digestible protein.

Red algae fatty acids help in skin renewal by participating in the construction of cell membranes. Of them produce agar-agar, which is used as a natural substitute for gelatin.

Types of red algae used to produce agar:

  • ceramium;
  • gracilarium;
  • enfelcium;
  • gelidium

Red algae contain many vitamins and microelements, used in cooking.

Red seaweed porphyra is used as a food in the United States, Korea, Japan and China. It is considered an exquisite dish and is grown on a large scale on specialized farms.

Porphyry is rich in provitamin A, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, fluorine and B vitamins. These substances restore the balance of minerals and help in strengthening the vascular walls.

In cosmetology, purple women are used in the creation of anti-aging skin products. They are antioxidants and prevent oxidative processes in the body.

In addition, the carotenoids and polysaccharides contained in these plants moisturize the skin and have a lifting effect.

Less valuable types of purple crops are used in agriculture for fertilizing the soil and feeding livestock. On the seabed, they act as a source of food and shelter for deep-sea inhabitants.

Red algae have a number of properties., thanks to which they are used in medicine and related areas. They are involved in the restoration of pancreatic cells, are part of expectorant drugs.

Crimsons have such useful qualities:

  • immunomodulatory;
  • antiviral;
  • antimicrobial;
  • antibacterial;
  • antimutagenic;
  • anti-inflammatory;
  • antifungal.

Also useful are red algae in medicine, due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

The use of agar is not limited to the preparation of jelly, jams and marmalade. It is actively used in microbiology for growing colonies of bacteria and fungi and their subsequent study.

Agar-agar is indispensable in this industry, because without it, it would be impossible to develop medical products to combat dangerous viruses.

With the help of agar-agar produce soft capsules for drugs, that need to dissolve. The most important component of the species chondrus (Irish moss) are polysaccharides called carrageenes.

They tend to inhibit the growth of HIV virus cells.

Aga-agar alga produces soft capsules for medicines.

Recently, the content of aquariums is not limited to the care of fish. Aqua design every year gaining popularity.

Red algae as a basic element of aquarium decor give it a sophisticated look and atmosphere of hot countries. However, it is not always purple that can fit well into the fragile ecosystem of a home aquarium.

They require the creation of special conditions and careful care.

If you do not follow the rules of caring for plants, they can grow in a few days and fill the whole surrounding space. This is the main signal of a violation of the biological balance in the aquarium.

Crimsons, being parasitic plants, can develop not only on the stems of other algae, but also on stones and other decorative elements.
