Echinodorus belongs to the most popular plants. This is due to the ability to adapt to different conditions, as well as the beauty of the plant.

Echinodorus – one of the most popular aquarium plants

If you do not take into account the hybrid varieties, then there are about 50 species of Echinodorus. Many were cultivated in household tanks.

Gardeners constantly breed new varieties that subdivided into the following types of growth:

In the wild, the plant is common in the territories of South and North America. They differ in that plants from South America contain essential oils that contain tissues that are not found in natives of North America.

Echinodorus is common in South and North America

In its natural environment, echinodorus occurs in various sizes – from 5 cm to 1.5 m in height. The main feature of the structure of the plant is the absence of rhizome in certain species.

But most have a rhizome, which differs by growth and is divided into horizontal and conical.

Echinodorus leaves meet the most diverse forms: pointed, linear, oval, heart-shaped. With shades from pale green to dark, there are species with practically black leaves, some with purple, rich red and white spots.

And the leaves are full of shades of red.

Such a variety of colors and shapes allows you to create interesting underwater landscapes. Only in the content there are some subtleties that you need to be aware of in order for the Echinodorus plant to survive in an aquarium.

The plant necessarily needs regular water changes and washing the ground with a siphon. As a result of the incorrect content of Echinodorus in the aquarium, he may die.

If the bush does not grow or becomes smaller, releasing needle-shaped leaves, then you need to take measures to save it.

The reason may lie in the wrong soil and root rot. Healthy roots are white.

Dark and translucent roots are a sign of decay, so the bush is dug out and the root system is inspected. The rotted places are removed, and the bush is planted in the pre-washed soil.

The roots of healthy Echinodorus are white.

The surviving rhizome when planting need to bury half to the cut point was above the ground surface. Thus, the decay will not recover, and if you take care of additional coverage of the roots, then the bush will start to grow very well.

Main ekhinodorus aquarian plant maintenance rules:

  • weekly water change (25% of the total);
  • filtration and aeration;
  • intense lighting;
  • temperature range 22–27 ° C;
  • water hardness up to 10 ° dH;
  • pH level 6.5-7.5;
  • carbonation (with a lack of CO2 on the leaves are formed calcium deposits);
  • landing in the ground – small gravel and coarse sand;
  • mineral fertilizers;
  • spring transplant is needed with the update of the bush.

Despite the fact that ekhinodorusy externally and internally differ, they are united by one property – the variability of the specimen within the species. Because of this, it is difficult to give a scientific definition to a plant without a flower and seeds, therefore there are plants in aquariums whose specific names have not been established.

Acquire adult large copies of the underwater form of Echinodorus is not worth it. They poorly adapt to new conditions and die from lack of nutrition.

Once in a favorable environment, echinodorus tend to translate into surface form. The best option is young plants.

They easily get used to the conditions of the new aquarium and grow dynamically.

The most popular aquarium species Echinodorus, and their description:
