Hydrotrich or Hydrotrich (Hydrotriche hottoniiflora)

Gidrotriche or hydrotrich (Hydrotriche hottoniiflora) – aquarium plant family Norichnikovye (Scophulariaceae), the scientific name of which is translated as “water hair”.

Homeland Gidrotriche is the island of Madagascar.

Hydrotrich – amazing aquarium plant, growing throughout the year evenly. Its long, erect stems are covered with light green leaves in the form of long needles, collected in whorls.

The plant, similar to horsetail, reaches a height of half a meter, while it is bad to branch, but it blooms well. Flowers protrude above the surface of the water.

Aquarists bypass hydrotrich, as it is capricious, very demanding in conditions plant content. Feels best hydrotrich in warm tropical aquarium. Water temperature not lower than 22 ° С.

The plant develops well in neutral water, the hardness of which does not exceed 6 °. Hard alkaline water stops growth and leads to the death of the plant.

Replacement of water should be made weekly in the amount of 30% of the total displacement, periodic cleaning of the soil is mandatory. Preferably presence in aquarium cleaner fish and / or mollusks that destroy algae, so dangerous for hydrotrich.

For the maintenance of this plant requires a strong diffused light, which can be obtained by combining incandescent and fluorescent type LB. Approximately the lamp power should be 0.5 watts per liter of water in the aquarium.

Light day for this aquarium plants may exceed 12 hours. Post hydrotrich in the center aquarium in small groups, 4-5 stems. Its root system is underdeveloped.

The plant is planted in a small, sandy, low-silty soil, because large particles of the substrate can damage the delicate roots. The plant feeds mainly on what is dissolved in water.

But at the same time specially feeding is not needed. Gidrotriche quite satisfied with the nutrients that aquarium come with fresh water feed aquarium fish and obtained by natural silting of the soil.

For breeding hydrotrich it is necessary to keep clean aquarium. The plant propagates by cuttings: for this purpose, they take an escape from the top, which is quite decompressed. Such a stalk can immediately be planted in the ground, without waiting for the appearance of the roots, prikopav the first verticil.

Of course, it is not always possible to obtain a new “inhabitant of the aquarium” from the cutting without escaping.
