Hippeastrum and amaryllis: differences, photos, features of care

The homeland of amaryllis is Africa, and the homeland of hippeastrum is Latin America. They were brought to Europe in the middle of the 18th century, during the times of colonial politics.

Modern breeders have developed a large number of varieties grown throughout the world.

Many inexperienced florists are interested in the question, what is the difference between these two plants – amaryllis and gippeastrum. They both look beautiful, and at first glance they are almost identical, so they are easily confused.

And both of these cultures are very attractive, and can be a wonderful decoration of any garden plot or premises. In this article we will talk about the features of growing and caring for these wonderful plants.

For the first time these flowers in Europe are mentioned in 1737 in professional catalogs of plants. Originally they were called lilionarcissi and lilies.

The genus Amaryllis is based on the description of specimens first brought from South Africa. Subsequently, specimens brought from America began to be attributed to this species.

Botanist V. Herbert in 1821 identified the main differences between African Amaryllis and plants from America. The new genus became known as Hippeastrum.

It should be noted that Amaryllis is beautiful – the only species, all other hybrids and varieties were named gippeastrum, or gippeastrum hybrid. Such an order was established in the International Botanical Congress, held in 1954.

Amaryllis were delivered to St. Petersburg in the middle of the XIX century, and in 1936 a nursery was established in Adler, where they began to grow their bulbs. Since 1953, the Estonian Institute of Experimental Biology has begun breeding work.

Hippeastrum is also a flowering plant of the Hippeastrum genus (Amaryllis family, class Monocotyledons). The whole genus consists of 90 varieties.

Although at a quick glance at the photo, the differences between hippeastrum and amaryllis are almost invisible, and both plants belong to the same family (amaryllisaceae), but they belong to different genera. Amaryllis, as noted above, is represented in the indoor floriculture by one type of plant.

The genus Hippeastrum includes about 90 species. Moreover, the species diversity is constantly replenished thanks to active breeding work.

Children in hippeastrum appear on the edges of the bulb from under the dry husk. In Amaryllis, they originate inside the bulb between healthy scales.

It should be noted that the diseases in these two plants are also similar, and both of them need a period of rest, due to which abundant flowering occurs later.

The differences between hippeastrum and amaryllis are clearly visible in the photo:

  • Amaryllis leaves are wider and have a normal greenish color. In hippeastrum leaves are narrower, tough and dark green. The latter are always looking up with proper care.
  • Hippeastrum has a full flower stalk, and amaryllis does not.
  • Hippeastrum can bloom 2 times a year (at the beginning of spring and at the end of winter), and amaryllis – once.
  • The bulb in hippeastrum is round, but it can also be long. Amaryllis – always pear-shaped.

And how to distinguish them?

Compared with the closest relative, gippeastrum with proper care and favorable conditions in height can reach one meter. In addition, the correct selection of soil for the plant contributes to its flowering up to four times a year.

One bush can contain 2-6 inflorescences. Petals have the most different shape, size and color.

It all depends on the varieties, the number of which reaches about 2000.

To understand what is the difference between hippeastrum and amaryllis, one should consider the second flower, which also belongs to bulbous plants growing to a height of 60 centimeters. This plant blooms continuously and abundantly, for which many gardeners love it. The beginning of flowering occurs in the middle of spring.

In the summer, amaryllis goes into hibernation, during which all its foliage dies.

The number of flowers in this plant varies in the range of 2-12 pieces. In shape, they resemble bowls in the shape of a funnel, formed from small six petals of the same size and shape.

Color can be very different, from pale pink to dark purple.

This plant is unpretentious and does not really need frequent watering. When the first shoots appear on the bulb, the substrate should be replaced, after which the container is installed in a well-lit place.

Until the flower reaches 10 centimeters in height, it is possible not to water it. Too much to pour it is not worth it, otherwise the root system may rot.

The plant is a perennial, so it should be replanted every 3-4 years. Among other things, experienced growers recommend once a year to update the top layer of soil, being careful to avoid damage to the root system.

Breeding can be done both by children and in the traditional way through seeds. Both methods are highly effective.

What is the difference between gippeastrum and amaryllis in care? This type of lily is also unpretentious, so no special effort is required for breeding in the home.

But there are some features that should be considered. Hippeastrum is a heat-loving plant, therefore it should be located only on the south side of the house.

Watering should not be abundant and frequent, especially during the period when the plant leaves the state of rest. Strong moisture can cause the death of the bulb.

Therefore, it is best to place the container with the plant in a pan with water. In this case, the flower itself will take moisture as much as needed.
