Effective methods of dealing with xenoccus on aquarium plants

Both experienced and novice aquarists are faced with the fact that unusual green dots appear on the leaves of plants and decorative objects – xeno-focus. The main danger is related to the fact that negative changes occur in the water system, which can harm the fish.

If the owner of the aquarium will not pay attention to the proliferation of green dots, then this is fraught with a gradual deterioration of the situation.

The main danger of xenococcus is related to the fact that negative changes occur in the aquatic system, which can harm fish.

All harmful spores enter the aquarium with food, plants and even fish. Under the influence of favorable conditions, they begin to actively proliferate, which is why they cover the ground, glass, and also slow-growing plants, blocking their access to the necessary nutrients.

Disputes are especially dangerous in that period of time when the user has just equipped the aquarium. This is due to the fact that during this period plant metabolism is very low, because of which they may simply die.

As practice shows, the risk of developing harmful algae is significantly reduced if the aquarist has resorted to a dense method of planting fast-growing plants.

A good result shows a camboba, a hygrophil and a peri-table. In the future, they can be replaced by slow-growing species.

Harmful spores of the xenococcus enter the aquarium together with food, plants and even fish.

Almost every aquarist encountered a situation where dark green spots suddenly appeared in his favorite aquarium, which have a rigid structure and are poorly removed by improvised means. Such manifestations can be single or multiple.

Difficult is the situation when dark spots cover almost all stones, shells, decorative elements, as well as plant leaves. If a novice aquarist has encountered such a problem for the first time, then he definitely needs to know that he is dealing with alga xenococus.

Experts say that this alga can be found in almost every aquarium, since it is simply impossible to protect oneself from it if there is a nutrient medium in the aquatic environment, consisting of macro and microelements. But the uncontrolled growth of xenococcus is fraught with the fact that the once little specks fill all the free space on plants and decorative objects.

It is precisely the plants that are under a huge threat, since a mechanical fight against xenococus in an aquarium is simply impossible.

The main task of an aquarist is to prevent an overgrowth of spores.

Those who have studied aquarism know that there there is a certain confrontation between algae and fish. This phenomenon is particularly noticeable in the environment, which is only a few days old (new aquarium).

The first to take root in a new place will have a better chance of survival. If harmful algae are the first to adapt, then they will quickly flood the entire surface of the plants and will not give them any opportunity to receive nutrients.

And when this place will be taken by aquarium plants, they will quickly grow and thereby destroy the xeno-focus.

Adapted aquarium plants will quickly grow and thereby destroy the xeno-focus

Such a natural struggle is observed only in the environment where green areas receive all the necessary components and good lighting for life. But this situation is not observed in all aquariums.

If conditions are far from ideal, then harmful algae enter the battle, which adversely affect the entire underwater world.

In the event that the aquarium does not provide for the presence of algae because of the big fish, the traditional reception with lighting will come to the rescue.

In fact, to determine the fact that this alga is present in the aquarium is not so difficult. It is characterized by its manifestation in the form of green dots, which are gradually spreading over all elements of the reservoir, coagles and even plants.

If this process is not settled, then the xenococcus will flood all the objects in the aquarium.

Xenococcus is characterized by manifestation in the form of green dots, which gradually spread throughout all elements of the reservoir.

It is a surprising fact that this alga does not affect those groups of plants that are characterized by a fast growth phase and have long stems. But that part of the green plantings, which grows very slowly and in the dark part of the aquarium, suffers from this alga most of all.

After a short period of time, small specks can be combined into one large spot, whose diameter can be up to eight millimeters. In addition, the alga becomes rough and tough, which is why it is very difficult to get rid of it.

You can eliminate this problem only in a cardinal way, when all the affected plants are simply removed from the aquarium.

Experts say that getting rid of xenococcus in an aquarium is possible only if time to identify the problem. Otherwise, the aquarium will gradually be affected by other types of algae: filamentous, Vietnamese, bacterial film, black beard.

And we should expect more serious problems from them.

Specialists have conducted specific studies that showed that xenokokus affects the aquarium, where there is a lack of phosphorus. The lack of this element is fraught with the fact that the growth of ordinary algae will be significantly reduced or completely stopped.

In addition, the lack of phosphorus prevents plants from assimilating nitrogen, which is why harmful nitrates accumulate in the aquarium. If you add to this and good lighting, then the appearance of harmful algae will not have to wait long.

Ksenokokus affects the aquarium where there is a lack of phosphorus

Most often, an acute shortage of phosphorus is observed in new aquariums 60 days after planting. To avoid such effects, you need to make microfertilizers in a timely manner, or feed the fish more, as their feed contains all the necessary components.

If the lack of phosphorus is observed in old aquariums, which are already fully equipped, then the main source of the problem can be triggered by fertilizers. The aquarist may contribute insufficient amounts or the ratio of NO 3: PO 4 is not suitable for the underwater world. The only solution in this situation is change fertilizer manufacturer.

Studies have shown that plants stop growing when the level of carbon dioxide in the aquarium drops to a critical level of 5 mg / l. But for the growth of algae, this indicator is quite enough.

If there is a good level of illumination in the aquarium, then the xenococcus will develop extremely rapidly and fill the entire bottom and even the walls of the tank.

When the xenococcus has just started to grow and has not had time to cause serious harm to the underwater environment, then it will be much easier to fight it. In this case, aquarists have provided several basic recommendations that have the necessary effectiveness. Eliminate the green dots will help the following actions:

  • If shade-loving and light-loving plants were planted in one aquarium, the former should be darkened with the help of the latter.
  • You need to adjust the level of illumination. The length of daylight hours should be no more than 10 hours per day. As for the intensity of illumination, this indicator should correspond to the species composition.

Fighting xenoccus is easier when it hasn’t grown

  • The aquarist should further stimulate the growth of higher plants, since they suppress the growth of xenococcus. In this case, you can increase the number of plants, slightly reduce the number of fish, as well as increase the lighting period up to 12 hours. In addition, it is necessary to daily clean the soil and change a tenth of the water.
  • In the aquarium, you can add indispensable sweepers (for example: Teodocsus snails and Ottocinculus affinis fish), which feed on harmful green algae, including the xenocus.
  • Fertilize at a rate of 0.5 mg per 1 liter of water in PO4. In some cases, the use of KN (PO4) 2 and KH2PO4 is considered acceptable. It is worth noting that in this case the risks of imbalance increase, which is why it is better to use complex fertilizers.
  • The aquarist can independently remove green dots from decorative objects, preventing them from gaining a foothold.
  • Perform regular water changes (30% weekly). Due to this, you can adjust the balance of micronutrients, avoiding their overabundance.
  • You can fight xenococcus with shrimp or scavenger fish

As practice shows, in most cases the listed actions are quite enough to effectively combat xenococus. But if the situation gets out of control, and the harmful green dots overwhelm all the plants, which stops their growth, then you need to resort to more radical methods.

In this case, we are talking about algaecides. The huge advantage is that all green algae are very sensitive to such agents.

The use of any drugs should be carried out in a certain dosage, which is always indicated in the instructions.

Don’t forget that everything algaecides are intended to eliminate the symptoms, but not the reasons for the development of xenococcus. That is why you need to initially perform all of the above actions to stabilize the state of the underwater system and prevent the re-development of negative algae.

Every aquarist should know effective methods of dealing with a xenococus that can suddenly occur in any aquarium. Non-observance of the elementary requirements almost always leads to the fact that the ecosystem of the aquarium world simply perishes.

That is why in the arsenal of every aquarist there should be a multifunctional sidex.

To use this tool, you must use a special activator, which is presented in the form of small particles, as well as a solution of glutaraldehyde.

Separately, it is worth noting that experienced aquarists do not always approve the use of saidex by beginners. This trend is due to the fact that to disinfect a reservoir that is infected with a xenococcus, it is necessary to select an individual concentration of the solution. But, those who have already come across this tool are well aware of all its advantages:

    • safe disinfection of fish;
    • reliable disinfection of the entire aquarium, stones, decorative elements;
    • guaranteed destruction of harmful fungi, spores and viral lesions.

It is important to remember that Sidex should be used with extreme caution, since exceeding the permissible dosage can provoke irreversible processes. To get rid of xenococcus on plants and not to harm them, you need to adhere to the following proportion: 19 ml of solution is needed for one hundred liters of aquarium water.

Sydeks need to be added within 10 days. In some cases, this period may be extended.
