Echinodorus paniculata: maintenance and breeding

Under natural conditions, Echinodus paniculata grows almost everywhere in South and Central America. This plant can be found along the banks of rivers and ponds, as well as on the flooded areas in the rainy season.

Echinodorus paniculatus is a fairly large plant, the height of which sometimes exceeds 1 m. On the contrary, the rhizome is short. The stalks are triangular in shape and are almost 2 times longer than the leaves.

The surface leaf plates are lanceolate or linear, their length is about 25 cm, and the width is up to 8 cm. The tip of the leaf plate is pointed. Leaf color is green. The entire surface of the sheet is covered with red spots.

Leaves growing under water have a linear or ribbon-like shape and are up to 20 cm in length and up to 1.5 cm in width. The leaf color is green or brownish.

In acceptable conditions, the plant may bloom, releasing surface inflorescences, sometimes containing daughter bushes with flowers. Peduncle has a length of up to 1 m, straight, triangular.

The filthy echinodorus can unmistakably be distinguished from other varieties of echinodorus by leaves having a lanceolate form.

Due to its size and not very decorative type, Echinodorus paniculata is very conditionally suitable for cultivation in an aquarium. In aquarium conditions, the plants form small leaves and disproportionately long petioles, which does not look beautiful. Under acceptable conditions, the plant quickly reaches the surface of the water and forms surface leaves, therefore only young bushes are suitable for keeping in an aquarium.

In order to slightly slow down the growth rate of a bush, it is necessary to plant it on depleted soil and not to use too bright lighting, which is best selected experimentally. It is advisable to trim off the surface leaves at once, thus it will be possible to ensure that a smaller root will be formed on the subsequent leaves.

The parameters of water are as follows: temperature 20-28 °, hardness dH 8-10 °, acidity pH 6.8-7.5.

As the soil, you can use sand, gravel or a mixture of them.
The echinodorus paniculata reproduces with its shoots appearing on the flower arrows, as well as with seeds. Subsidiary bushes that appear on the color arrows after a lobe of roots appears on them and a few leaves are neatly separated and planted in a new place, but it is unlikely that it will be possible to get many bushes in this way, usually in 1 year you can only get 2 bushes in this way . A much greater chance to grow bushes can be from seeds that can be sown in a suitable container with wet sand, at a temperature of about 25 ° C.

When the seedlings reach a height of 8-10 cm, they can already be transplanted into the soil of the aquarium. It should be noted that the Echinodorus paniculata is easily crossed with other plants of its family and it is possible to obtain hybrid forms with different properties.
