Cryptocoryne reed (Cryptocoryne lingua)

Cryptocoryne Reed (Cryptocoryne lingua) is an aquarium plant of the Cryptocoryne genus (Cryptocoryne) of the aroid family (Araceae).

Grows Cryptorine Reed in flowing waters of. Kalimantan (Borneo), and the watercourse can be both fast and slow, for example, drying up during non-rainy seasons of rivers, or in rivers subjected to tides, or in small lakes and streams located near forests and filled with water in the rainy season .

Cryptocoryne Reed is a bush consisting of rosettes of petiolate leaves on a succulent short stem and reaching a height of up to 12 cm. The fleshy leaf plate is wedge-shaped at the base and pointed from the top end resembles a tongue in shape. The leaf reaches up to 7 cm in length and about 1.5 cm in width.

The leaves are painted in bright green color, on the bottom side the picture is darker. The covering sheet is 8-15 cm, tube length is 3-8 cm.

The plate was 3-5 cm long, tail-pointed in shape, sometimes slightly curled, brilliantly yellow in the throat and lower part, in the upper purple color. Collar is missing.

Most beautiful in aquarium Group cryptorins reed Looks in the foreground. Before releasing the first leaf after the transplant, it gets used to the conditions for a long time, therefore, it is not recommended to replant the plant more than once a year. For optimum plant content Water of 6–8 ° C is required, with a reaction close to neutral (pH 6.5–6.8) and a temperature of 22–28 ° C.

Because cryptocoryne reed feels comfortable in clean water, then he needs powerful filtration and regular water changes in aquarium (up to a quarter of the volume). Cryptocoryne is growing slowly. Lighting in the aquarium should be scattered, weak.

Fluorescent lamps (type LB, power about 0.4 watts per liter of aquarium volume) or incandescent lamps, the bulbs of which are opaque, are used as lighting devices. The duration of daylight hours is at least 12 hours. Plant out cryptocoryne reed it is necessary in the nutritious soil laid by a layer not less than 5 cm.

Coarse sand is suitable as a substrate. Cold soil slows down plant growth, so the temperature of the soil should not be much different from the water temperature. Cryptocoryne reed is susceptible to the so-called “cryptocorynous disease” (especially in winter), when the leaves literally overnight become soft, vitreous and quickly decompose.

At the first symptoms of a lesion, you should try to save the rhizomes. You can save the plant by cleaning the soil and changing the water in the aquarium. In most cases, the plants recover.

Such changes can occur with a sharp change in the conditions of the content, the addition of chemicals to the water or a change in the filter media. However, sometimes the disease occurs for no apparent reason. In no case can not transplant a diseased plant in another aquarium, as this disease is tolerated.

The cause of the disease is currently not established.

Cryptocoryne Reed multiplies by separating from creeping shoots with several leaves about 5 cm long. There is also a second method breeding, wherein they remove all the leaves from the rhizome and leave it for 1-3 weeks to float on the surface of the water.

During this period, daughter plants are formed on the rhizome. When the leaves that appear on them grow to 4-5 cm, the rhizomes are cut, and the resulting plants are rooted in the ground.

If only one plant is formed on the rhizome, it is separated with a part of the rhizome, and the rest is left to float on the surface until the next daughter plant is formed.

In order to cryptocoryne reed bloomed it is necessary to plant the plant in a pot whose diameter is about 7 cm. The pot must be filled with several layers of soil: the bottom consists of garden soil that does not contain humus and lime, with a small addition of peat or from weathered granite with the addition of fertilizer and admixture of silica sand.

The top layer consists of gravel. The pot is put on the aquarium soil heated by the bottom heater and filled with water (2-4 cm).

After six months or a year of krytokorina reed bloom.
