Crinum aquarium: a giant queen or gentle kukeryashki?

Aquarists who resort to decorating the underwater house with crinums clearly know that it will benefit. The plant will always thank for the good care of their appearance and health, and wavy leaves will give the design freshness and lightness.

Crinum aquarian – a collective concept. This original and unpretentious plant has about 15 options, which are characterized by a number of similar properties. In addition, each of them individually and uniquely.

Species with wavy leaves are a particularly vivid representative. Their long leaves are evenly distributed throughout the volume of water, and under ideal conditions you can admire beautiful flowers.

Crinum Kalamistratum and there is the very wavy decoration. Some call him Crinum Curly.

The leaves are separated from the root by means of the bulb, which is sometimes very poorly developed in aquarium species. They have a narrow long leaf plate with a clearly visible median vein.

Spiral-twisted edges give the whole plant fluffiness and bulk.

Crinum Thai has straight wide leaves, which, reaching the surface of the water, spread out on it a dense carpet. This should be taken into account when you plant the bottom with other plants: the amount of light they have will significantly decrease.

Krinum loves mobile water. When this is achieved two goals:

  • root siltation decreases;
  • maximum carbon dioxide is absorbed in neighboring areas.

To the conditions of growth unassuming. The water temperature is suitable in the range of 19-26 °, the acidity index is neutral or slightly alkaline, the rigidity is on average (6.5-7.5).

For pure fresh water, the plant will be grateful, and its additional enrichment with CO2 will lead to a bright color and intensity of growth.

The root system is well developed and goes deep into the ground. Therefore, its minimum layer should be 5-6 cm (but not more than 8).

Leaves at violation of integrity allocate a lot of special toxic substance rich in alkaloids. Therefore, they never eat fish, and the plant does not suffer from damage.

On the root bulb can form onion-kids. They consist of several layers of leaf scales and can emit young leaves.

When the leaves will be at least 4-5, the onions can be carefully separated and secured separately in the ground. The distance between individuals should be increased, since the root system that has grown in the future will experience inconvenience.

Bulbs do not appear immediately. The plant must be adult and healthy.

In addition, adequate lighting, adequate water quality and the availability of nutrients are necessary.

Soil for quality growth is better to take sand or small gravel. It should not be prone to siltation, be able to breathe and at the same time be nourishing.

For this, it is additionally fertilized with special fertilizers.

In its historic homeland – South Africa, Asia and the tropics of North America – is found giant lily cardiocrinum. The plant, whose name is derived from such words as “heart” and “lily”, can not be eccentric.

Stem up to 4m tall and flowers falling down to 25 cm in size! Such a bloom takes power from the plant so much that the leaves become rare and inexpressive.

Giants grow in the open air, in areas characterized by high humidity.

Despite this shocking characteristic, these flowers belong to the family of Amaryllis and, as well as Crinum Thai, unpretentious and not capricious. Even the root system can change its color depending on the color of the soil, adapting to its chemical composition.

Whichever plant you choose (Crinum Thai or Crinum floating), in Aura decoration will bring in an aura of romance and lightness. The developing curly “strands” are light and airy, they do not prevent the fish from swimming, and species with broad leaves will be useful when laying eggs.

Massive, strong and large leaves of bright green color – a symbol of health in the aquarium, and the fact of flowering is a worthy reason for positive emotions and good good mood!
