Hornpaw dark green (Ceratophyllum demersum) is an aquarium plant of the family Corolisceae (Ceratophyllaceae).
In vivo romantail dark green forms thickets in slowly flowing and stagnant bodies of water in moderately warm areas around the globe. Often, adult plants have no root system.
At amateur aquarists romantail dark green widespread because unpretentious in content and not growing rapidly. Its long, thin stems are dotted with fragile bright green dissected leaves.
Plant blossoms inconspicuous small flowers. Thistle thickets often become a good breeding ground for aquarium fish, spawning. Have the plant in groups in the background or middle plan aquarium or left to float freely in the water.
Since the plant is a good natural by filter, it must be periodically rinsed under running water.
Hornpaw dark green grows well in moderately warm and in cold and tropical aquarium. When the water temperature is 24-28 ° C, it starts to develop incredibly fast. There are no special requirements for water parameters, but the plant feels more comfortable in moderately hard water with weakly alkaline or neutral reaction.
It grows worse in cool and sour soft water. It requires regular water changes, because, being a natural filter, it quickly becomes clouded with particles of turbidity, which spoils its appearance.
Nevertheless, it endures the bloom on the leaves with sufficient firmness. Contaminated plant simply rinse under running water and return back to aquarium.
Hornpaw is a light-loving plant, therefore, this factor should be given special attention. Of course the most useful lighting – diffused natural light.
Although the algae rarely settle on the leaves of the robeber, it is still necessary to protect its leaves from direct sunlight. Incandescent or fluorescent lamps can be used as means of artificial lighting. The power of the latter is calculated based on the volume of the aquarium (approximately 0.3 watts per 1 liter of volume).
Under conditions of artificial lighting, the color of the plant is somewhat dimmer than with natural light. The duration of daylight for this plant should be at least 14 hours. Contain honego can be planted in the ground or floating in the water.
The root system of this plant is poorly developed and has no significant effect in the diet. All necessary for the development of the substance the plant receives with food for fish and fresh water. These substances are quite enough, so no additional feed is needed.
Like in natural conditions, the growth of plants in the aquarium is seasonal: in the fall the growth of the erysipelas slows down, the stems fall to the bottom, only the apical shoots that give birth to new stems in spring remain intact.
Breeds romantail dark green by dividing the stalks – it is enough to take a small portion of the stalk to grow a new plant.
