Conditions of maintenance of the aquarium plant Hygrophil

This long-stemmed aquatic plant from the family of acanthus is very popular. It forms lush bushes and looks spectacular in an aquarium. Hygrophil is not only beautiful, but also useful – it perfectly cleans the water.

This grass requires a high aquarium, as it grows quickly and its upper part comes out of the water. A great advantage of the plant is its low maintenance and year-round growth.

Hygrophil is an excellent filter for aquariums

The hygrophilic aquarium plant originates from Southeast Asia. At home, it grows in warm tropical waters, half sank to the bottom.

There are more than 100 types of hygrophilous, with different color, size and shape of leaves. Their common feature is a smooth stem and elongated leaves in pairs.

With good content, the color of the leaf blades becomes bright and juicy.

Hygrophilus diluted by cuttings or dividing the roots

Different types can grow both on shore and in water. Hygrophil is well tolerated in the aquarium, where it effectively cleans the aquatic environment from nitrates and a variety of harmful impurities. She is pretty unpretentious.

The most comfortable temperature for its content is + 23 ° … + 26 ° C.

The plant prefers nutritious soil and bright long-term illumination. For good growth it needs top-dressing with macro- and microelements, CO2. Under the right conditions, the hygrophil forms tall, spectacular bushes and becomes a real decoration of the aquarium.

The plant is propagated by cutting or dividing the rhizome. The cuttings easily take root and quickly form a well-developed root system.

Hygrophilus ivolist one of the popular species

In aquarium breeding several types of hygrofil are used. Of them The following are most popular.:

  • willow;
  • multi-seed;
  • pinnatide;
  • cinnimbus lemongrass;
  • marble rosenerig patterned;
  • aragvay;
  • balsamic;
  • Cinema demorphic changeable;
  • demorphic Weiss-Grun and others.

This is one of the most common types of aquarium grass. Under natural conditions, the hybophilus of ivolist is found in water bodies and swamps of Southeast Asia. This is a large plant, reaching a height of 30−40 cm

It is better to plant it on the sides or in the back of the aquarium so that it does not obstruct the view.

Fluvial hygrophil suitable for aquariums with small fish

The plant has a straight, smooth stem up to 1 cm thick and bright green leaves that are lighter below. Their edges are smooth or with small teeth. They reach a length of 15 cm with a width of 0.8 cm.

Leaf blades are straight or slightly curved. If there is too much light in the aquarium, they become brown.

In the above-water part of the plant, groups of white flowers are formed. Hygrophil in an aquarium grows well throughout the year and releases 2–4 new leaflets in a month.

It can grow both in the water column and on the surface. Optimum conditions for keeping hygrophil hygrophilous:

  • water temperature from + 24 ° to + 28 ° C;
  • hardness – up to 8 ° dH;
  • acidity – from 6 to 8 ph;
  • soil – nutritious, preferably coarse sand with silt;
  • the lighting is moderate, lasting 10−12 hours per day, with an intensity of 0.4−0.5 W / 1l.

Water should be filtered and changed once a week at 20−25%. If its temperature is too low, the growth of the bushes will slow down. In hard water, the leaves and stem of the plant become brittle.

When there is insufficient lighting, the plant draws a stem, leaves turn pale and shallow, it loses its attractiveness.

Ivolistus Hygrophil Doesn’t Like Excessive Illumination

If the lighting is too bright, brown leaves will appear on the leaves, and the surface part will also develop greatly. The plant responds well to the introduction of mineral fertilizers.

It grows rapidly, its leaves become bright green.

The plant is easily propagated by cutting. For grafting using a strong healthy stem, cutting it into pieces with 5-6 whorls of leaves.

The length of the cuttings should be at least 8−10 cm. They are planted in groups of three or four pieces in the back or side of the aquarium.

It is not recommended to keep the plant in the same aquarium with snails, as they can pluck its foliage and damage the stem.

It is best to combine hygrophil with fish of small breeds, which will spawn on its leaves. The plant gets along well with fish who love to dig in the ground.

It has a powerful root system that is hard to damage.

Hygrophilia violet is a rare hybrid form. She has a long stem and leaves, painted in purple. Leaf blades are located opposite.

Hygrophil can grow in both low and high aquariums.

For hygrophil violet in the aquarium, you need good lighting

In containers of small height, it forms a magnificent surface part. Usually it is planted near the side walls or in the background.

Together with green plants of hygrophil, violet forms a beautiful bright group.

In order for the plant to retain an intense color, it needs continuous lighting. In addition to the overhead light, you must also organize the side lights. Duration of lighting – from 12 hours.

If there is little light, the plant will stretch greatly, and its leaves will be crushed and will lose their purple color.

Hygrophile requires nutrient soil from coarse sand and mineral supplements. In this case, it forms lush bushes with brightly colored leaves. Water temperature should be from + 24 ° to + 28 ° С.

The plant needs soft water – in too hard it becomes fragile.

Hygrophilus purple propagated by cuttings. To make them, a healthy stem of a plant is cut into pieces with two or three pairs of leaves.

The cuttings are left to float in the aquarium until the roots appear, after which they are planted in the ground.

Hygrophil reddish – quite rare species. It is a tall plant with narrow red-brown leaves 6–8 cm long. It needs intensive lighting, otherwise the leaves lose their original color, the stem is pulled out, the lower leaves are destroyed.

The plant also reacts badly to soft, acidic water – it turns pale, old leaves die.

Hygrophil mnogosemennaya common subspecies hygrofil

Hygrophil Multiseed. This is a common plant, sometimes called the “Indian star”. It has a long stem with light green oval leaves.

Hygrophil prefers lightly saturated soil, it usually does not need additional feeding. But if the bushes grow strongly, then they need mineral supplements.

Hygrophil multi-seed grows well in paludarium or tropical greenhouse. She needs bright lighting, high humidity and nutritious soil.

Hygrophilous raspifolnaya, or Sinima. This is a beautiful plant, very popular with aquarists. It has a long stem with leaves, the shape of which depends on the lighting.

In moderate light, they are small oval, but if the light is bright, the leaves grow and take a beautiful carved form. This species is distinguished by unpretentiousness.

It can grow both in warm water and in water of moderate temperature + 20 ° … + 22 ° С, although its growth slows down somewhat. The hardness and reaction of water for him are irrelevant.

The brighter the lighting, the more carved the leaves of the hygrophil Sinim

Sigima’s hygrophil is usually placed in the center of the aquarium. It requires nutritious soil from coarse sand or small pebbles, but it grows well in the soil of large fractions. This species can also be grown in the water column without soil.

It propagates not only by cuttings and dividing the bush, but also by old leaves. To do this, put the sheet on a plate with sand, pour water and place it in bright light.

Cuttings can be buried in the ground or left to float on the surface. Hygrophil Cinema perfectly grows not only in the aquarium, but also in the greenhouse in the nutrient soil.

She needs to provide bright light and high humidity.

According to the conditions of detention, all species of hygrophil differ little from each other: they need bright light and warm water of medium hardness with a neutral or slightly alkaline reaction. Water should be fresh, regularly changed.

Plants prefer nutritious soil and periodic mineral supplements.
